For sewists old and new. Join the fun, let us know what you're working on.
I apologise for not having been around at all. I've been away all footloose and fancy free but now i'm back and have NO NEED TO BUY NEW FABRIC. I must use what I have.

It just feels sudden - from sending out a christmas cracker pattern on Saturday to closing down on Monday. I hope, it's not for health reasons.

Brefugee · 28/10/2025 09:44

is there an announcement anywhere?

Jins · 30/10/2025 08:23

Latest announcement is that another firm is taking over W&W website, FB group etc which is good but the sale ends tomorrow.

I think I’ve bought everything I might possibly want to make but it’s good to hear that the patterns will still be around if I change my mind

Jins · 01/11/2025 07:53

I’ve managed to stash bust some fabric that came in a mystery box from Knighton fabrics by using a free pattern from Sinclair that I’ve had for years. I’m now the proud owner of a Harper cardigan in an unusual mostly black print involving mushrooms. I made the classic cardigan length but wish I’d gone with a longer version to use the fabric up completely.

It’s a very useful pattern but next time I might download the instructions to see how the front band should be finished 🤣. I’m not usually so reckless and generally read through the construction before starting but as this was a toile I winged it.

twobluechickens · 01/11/2025 09:21

I like winging it from time to time, especially for a toile. It turned out to be a mistake with this jacket I’m working on but never mind.

I’m thoroughly enjoying quilting my jacket though. No wonder people send quilts off to be quilted - I’m only dealing with a jacket bodice and it was almost too big for the gap in my machine.

Jins · 08/11/2025 10:21

Attempt no 3 at jeans this weekend but this time it’s Sinclair’s Metro which are pull on with a faux fly and closer to jeggings. Sinclair usually fit me pretty well so I’m making another pair of shorts length and see where I end up.

I’m sure I’ll be able to get the Winter Wear designs pattern to work for me but it will need a lot of adjustment to accommodate what I laughingly call my waist. I need to get my head round jeans construction before I tackle that properly. It’s mildly annoying that now my sewing skills have improved to the point that I’m confident to tackle jeans the struggle is now getting them to fit. I’d have been proud to wear my last attempt if I could have fastened them!

After this I’m turning some sweater knits from a mystery box into Harper cardigans and I’m considering making the raglan sweatshirt that came with this month’s Love Sewing. I still need some warmer trousers but the stash isn’t yielding anything suitable and I reeealllly don’t want to go to Abakhan

twobluechickens · 08/11/2025 19:45

I finally finished my Ayora jacket despite making a few mistakes along the way. Really pleased with it but I will definitely quilt before I cut the pieces out next time, it’s smaller than it should be.

I surprised myself by really enjoying hand-sewing down the facings and bias binding. A nice mindful task!

Jins · 09/11/2025 06:06

I love a bit of hand sewing. I used to hem all my mum’s creations as I was better at invisible hemming.

Sinclair patterns have smashed it and the Metro ‘jeans’ fit pretty well first time. I’ve graded a size 2 at the hips to size 10 at the waist which was a bit of a challenge but worked out. Based on measurements I should have gone to size 14 but that wasn’t possible. I’ve just got the waistband to do now which is where everything went wrong size wise last time but if it doesn’t work out as the pattern suggests I’ve got a plan. Then jeans making goes on hold until I find some really nice stretch denim and I’ve decided which pattern I’m using as the base.

So hopefully I’ll be on to stash busting some knit fabrics into Harper cardigans this afternoon.

PickAChew · 09/11/2025 22:20

I often find hand sewing too painful to enjoy for long but I've recently re-discovered hand embroidery and that I can do that for a good while without anything locking up or aching now that I've got some nickel free needles (because burning, throbbing, red raw fingertips make it less enjoyable, too!) I've even treated myself to a hands free hoop set which is a game changer for some of the more fiddly stitches.

kittykarate · 10/11/2025 11:37

I picked up some cheap red lycra in the Abakhan bargain bins they were doing some ugly lycra and sports mesh for £2.50 a kilo. I'm going to give the Waves and Wild Jupiter Mens Leggings a go, MrKitty is doing a festive run, so he can have some red tights to go with his elf tshirt.

Jins · 11/11/2025 08:42

I could do with some more mesh. Thanks for the tip @kittykarate.

Waistband finished on my Metro ‘jeans’ and I’m very happy with the result. Adjustments are needed to the rear rise due to flat bum issues but there’s loads of capacity to adjust the rear yoke as that’s deeper than I’d like. So I think that when it comes to trouser patterns I need to look at Sinclair first.

twobluechickens · 16/11/2025 22:34

Finished my first superstar bra and it’s so comfortable. I will definitely be making more. Spent yesterday matching my stash to patterns which was fun. I’ve got a plan for almost all of it so I’ll get it all cut out and will sew it up bit by bit.

Jins · 17/11/2025 08:47

I love the superstar bra. I’ve made 2 as bras and one as a bikini top and more are planned as they are insanely comfortable yet give enough support. An upcoming project is to adapt the back of the pattern to lower the height of the back a bit so it doesn’t show as much. I already shorten the straps so they don’t cross over at the back.

I’m pondering a day of sewing today.

Brefugee · 17/11/2025 09:56

sorry missed all the superstar bra talk - can someone send me a link to where i can buy the pattern?

Jins · 17/11/2025 12:19

Here it is @Brefugee

Also on Foldline and possibly still Etsy but the new owner of W&W would probably like the sale

That bra looks great, I want to make it 😍
I'm new to these threads, I hope no one minds me jumping in at the halfway point 😊

kittykarate · 20/11/2025 15:12

Hey and welcome @MO0N ! All are welcome here, and the only rule is no fabric stash shaming.

( I am joking - I really need the shaming so I stop buying stuff!)

MO0N · 20/11/2025 17:20

Thank you @kittykarate 😄
I saw that the 1st post says 'let us know what you're working on'.
Well, I am about to make a new ironing board cover, mine is so dreadful & loose that it puts me off ironing anything!
I will be using fabric from some old curtains✊😄

kittykarate · 20/11/2025 18:10

I need to crack on with some Xmas gift bags. I have the fabric, the ribbon, but also zero motivation.

I finished off the meggings (men's leggings, waves and wild jupiter), but I haven't started anything new. I have some slinky lurex jersey, it's been on my to do list to make a party top in it, but I've got nowhere in selecting a pattern.

kittykarate · 20/11/2025 18:11

Maybe the Batrington tee, or the jalie fake wrap tee...

twobluechickens · 20/11/2025 20:02

Hello and welcome @MO0N ! I also need to make an ironing board cover.

MO0N · 20/11/2025 21:13

I'd offer to share tips on ironing board covers @twobluechickens but I am flying blind so mine will likely be a bit rough😃

twobluechickens · 20/11/2025 22:32

Mine will be too! Frankly it can’t be any worse than what’s on there now.

MO0N · 21/11/2025 00:36

I've done most of it.
Generally I'm happy but it's too loose at the sides, think I'm going to have to lace it underneath- like a corset (iyswim)
I'm hoping that having a nicer ironing board will motivate me to get on with the rest of my sewing. Ironing is so woven in with sewing (excuse the pun) that having an aversion to your ironing board is a sort of writers block😄
