For sewists old and new. Join the fun, let us know what you're working on.
I apologise for not having been around at all. I've been away all footloose and fancy free but now i'm back and have NO NEED TO BUY NEW FABRIC. I must use what I have.

That napkin edge looks lovely and crisp, @Brefugee

I might have bought a cover stitch machine. I was looking at them a couple of weeks ago, but held off as I wasn’t sure if I wanted the model that was in stock at my local shop. However, I found out the other day that it’s closing down, which is tragic as we have so few decent craft shops here, and they were one of the better ones. So I went in yesterday, and because of them using a cover stitch on the Sewing Bee, they’d sold all the machines - except the display one. So I got 20% off!

Still gutted about the shop closing though. I really prefer to see and touch fabric before I buy it.

Brefugee · 08/08/2025 16:35

thanks for the lovely comments on the napkin edge - i hope the next 7 will be better.

Straw poll: should i do all the decorative stitching in pale pink, or each one a different colour?

@Castlerigg congrats on the coverstitch. We expect a full report!

WWomble · 08/08/2025 20:38

@Brefugee lovely stitching. I would make each napkin different, change the colour or the style of stitch, then they’re identifiable for each person, in case they can be used for more than one meal.

Brefugee · 08/08/2025 21:33

i think i'll have to change the colour, i don't think i have 8 fancy stitches that i like!

Castlerigg · 08/08/2025 21:34

I think same stitch, different colour for each napkin would be nice.

Jins · 09/08/2025 08:39

I agree with the same stitch and different colours. They look lovely!

Brefugee · 09/08/2025 19:44

All done. Next up: table runner. Then place mats

@Brefugee they are lovely.

And the Luella skirts look great @RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie

@jins you had a right bargain with that mystery box, the textured stuff with the flowers at the top of the stack looks especially interesting.

I haven’t done any sewing recently, we’re moving house soon so today I packed up the majority of my sewing room - turns out a kallax stores much more than I had thought and we will need more boxes.
Despite having plenty of fabric I did buy 12m last week on holiday - the fabric stalls in a market in Eindhoven were too tempting. There were a lot of beaded/embroidered tulle types, a stall with more variety and weights of denim than I’ve seen, another with all weights/weaves of plain undyed linen, and one selling various (mostly poly based) for €1/m.

Brefugee · 09/08/2025 22:01

i live just across the border from the Netherlands, we often have travelling fabric markets come over here from there, and it seems every town with a weekly market has an extensive fanric/haberdashery section.

ClearHoldBuild · 09/08/2025 22:08

Haven’t posted in a while, I’ve been busy though trying some new patterns.

That's so pretty, @Brefugee

It's always sad when a craft related shop closes, {mention:cas}@cas @castlerigg

PickAChew · 09/08/2025 23:11

Try again, it terminally went all bobbins.

It's always sad when a craft related shop closes, @Castlerigg - I've actually been looking at coverstitch machines and, since Sewcentre have started selling Janome I'm thinking I might try to trade in my annoying Pfaff towards the cover pro 3000 they have on sewing bee.

Very productive, @ClearHoldBuild -i rather like the tiers in the blue one. I think I saw that pattern during my browsing, today

ClearHoldBuild · 10/08/2025 08:02

@PickAChew its the Delft dress, a lot easier than I expected but I did attach the skirt back to front to begin with but the sewing gods were kind because I hadn’t overlocked it when I realised 😌

Jins · 10/08/2025 09:54

I’ve had my coverstitch a little over a year now and we’re slowly getting to grips with each other. All I can say is it’s lucky it’s easy to thread as I break threads more than I’d like to! Does a blindingly good hem on wovens and I’m gradually learning to take my time going over seams on stretch fabrics.

Brefugee · 10/08/2025 10:36

lovely garments, @ClearHoldBuild
i really like the green/white one, the colour of the skirt part exactly matches the green flashes in the top. Great choice.

(may i ask what pattern it is?)

Thank you. It’s the Tilly and the Buttons Megan dress. I was gifted both fabrics from different people and it was only when I was having a sort through I saw the colour match was perfect.

Brefugee · 10/08/2025 11:27

it is a match made in heaven and it was meant to be!

I’ve not admitted it until now but last week I was buying some clearance fabrics from Knighton and a 10kg stretch mystery box seemed to slip into my basket for £15

It has just arrived in a massive box. The three I bought were spot on - even the 3m for 3p viscose elastane but the mystery box was spectacular. The shortest length is about 1.5m and the rest are between 2 and 3m. There’s only one I definitely won’t use (Xmas) but all the rest I can see me using. Highlights are the 3m swim fabric and the rust and black striped rib. The yellow is perfect for lining swimsuits. There’s some terry backed patterned ones - not sure what they’ll end up as.

So my stash is well and truly full and I’ve got an order from elsewhere on the way 🤦‍♀️

You got a nice mix there - I got one of the Poundfabrics boxes the other month - lots of patterned denims (made into bags), an absolute mountain of that waterproof outdoor fabric which re-did all my garden sofa cushions and then went to my mum's house to do hers, and a slightly disappointing mix of fabrics I could actually use for quilting - but I got hella mileage out of it and the box was huge.

twobluechickens · 10/08/2025 11:59

I’ve almost finished the aforementioned Jade shirt and hoooo boy am I glad I didn’t pay for the pattern. The separate button band piece is too short, the collar is too long and I don’t think there’s enough ease in the top of the sleeve if you were making it in your actual size. The sleeve plackets aren’t marked on the pattern piece. I’ve gone up two sizes to get an oversized look so it’s fine but I’d be cheesed off if I’d paid $10 for the pattern.

Aside from that it’s a fab shirt and I’m really pleased with it! 😂

Frumpyunicorn · 10/08/2025 21:36

I really love those napkins @Brefugee

I finished my zadie jumpsuit and have really enjoyed wearing it this weekend. It is not perfect but I would make another one.

This one?
Jade Relaxed Linen Shirt Tutorial and Pattern – the thread https://share.google/opTzxzMxRVTI20GwB

It's sitting rather badly round the model's neck.

Yes that’s it! I think the collar is drafted too straight (ie not much curve)and so it’s too upright, it needs to lie flatter against the neck. I’ll have a look at the one from the Frida blouse as that sits really nicely.

I may also just splurge on the Cornell shirt from Elbe Textiles, which gets good reviews.

PickAChew · 11/08/2025 08:13

The whole thing is also pulling back and trying to choke her which suggests either that the neckline isn't right or it's not fitting across the model's shoulders and needs more room at the back.

I finally made a Frida blouse, this summer, and the collar does sit nice and flat. I need to make more allowance for the diagonals next time I make one, though, as the loose weave fabric tended to stretch on the bias quite a lot, so the thickness is a bit uneven.

Just when I start to think I’m improving in neatness etc @PickAChew goes and posts a pic and I’m back to thinking ‘must try harder’. That blouse is gorgeous.

I wore my Mississippi avenue dress this weekend and another one is on the cards. I’m not a fan of a high waist and I’m finding the almost empire waist on this a bit bloody irritating if I’m honest. Another couple of cm would make a world of difference. It’s a good opportunity to draft a facing while it’s fresh in my mind.

I really need some better fitting trousers so it’s time to look seriously at that. I’m still in summer sewing mode so there’ll be a top of some sort on the cards. Last year’s swimwear has been altered but I do need another one piece and I’m going to have a go at Sinclair Indigo as it’s very similar to one I loved a few years ago. Finally a LN Luna pj set and a new barret bralette in whatever my new size is and that’s my sewing list sorted.
