Hiya, I've been seeing some very beautiful AI art recently on Instagram and thinking of buying some as a framed print. Has anyone bought any AI art prints? What was your experience in terms of quality, delivery, and overall satisfaction? Are there any particular artists or websites you would recommend? Thanks!"

Although I do completely empathise with concerns around the way in which LLMs are created in terms of intellectual property, feels like the horse has already bolted on that one though.

This is like someone printing out clip art icons from the 90s and pinning them on the wall.

It's interesting people saying AI art isn't art. I'm sure it will have been said many times over the centuries as the world changed, photography seems a good example perhaps? AI is merely a tool, like a pencil or paintbrush or a camera. Just because you have access to a pencil, doesn't mean you will be an award winning artist, I view AI in the same way. Generative AI requires skill, prompt engineering still requires creativity and thought. I'm sure we will see some great artwork via AI (and a lot of dross!) but the creator will be the prompt engineer, not the computer programme.

The US govt decided AI art cannot be copyrighted as it’s too much “machine” and not enough “human.”

Why This Award-Winning Piece of AI Art Can’t Be Copyrighted

Matthew Allen’s AI art won first prize at the Colorado State Fair. But the US government has ruled it can’t be copyrighted because it’s too much “machine” and not enough “human.”

@lokomoko interesting thank you, that does seem to set some kind of bar doesn't it, though, I still think there will be varying success with it with some people able to produce much better work than others and that will be recognised in some way, art has always been subjective?

I do wonder as well the difficulty in replicating something as a means to measure the influence of human vs machine, the rate at which LLMs are developed (depending on the LLM) means you could use the same prompts another day and get a different result.

@polajjjl are you the OP by any chance? Your writing style is similar.

polajjjl · 31/07/2024 22:18

@lokomoko lol no I'm not, I haven't even read through the thread, feel free to report my post and MN can confirm I'm not a sock puppet! It's an interesting discussion, or at least it can be people don't get called out for sock puppeting disrupting it! It is a discussion with different sides, yours isn't necessarily the right one, nor is mine. I'm speaking in this tone because I don't have skin in the game and don't feel passionately about either side, I can be convinced. I work with AI and have and to do a lot of training in it so I can see how it's not as binary as machine vs human and there is some creativity in it, but equally, was interested to learn about the copyright decision you mentioned as I hadn't heard that and that does set a strong precedent in the debate.

@Keepingcosy Who knows, perhaps...As true artists I imagine their focus would have been exploring the depths of their creativity and imagination as opposed to limitations of what tools other people thought they should be using...But the point is they all agreed that artists are influenced by the art that precedes them...

@polajjjl Completely agree, AI is here and not going anywhere. I know artists who are concerned about the impact on jobs but I also know computer programmers, writers, etc who are too. It's an amazing tool with potential downsides but it also offers great opportunities for us too.
