Stitch and bitch thread #9. I have pressing concerns

Welcome welcome!

I've not made anything for ages after I screwed up the same thing twice. I'm gonna have another blimmin crack at it though! I've reconnected with another hobby and work is seriously getting in the way of everything I want to do, darn it.

@Frumpyunicorn very definitely plus sized here. Not sure Rebecca Page’s patterns are still available? (I think she might have closed down) I lengthen my Olivias- that’s how I made the cutting mistake. Current fav length is pattern +13cm, I also add the curved pockets from Helen’s Closet York Pinafore. I have tried making it dress length, but it was too voluminous and just looked like a nightie! I love wearing them but I really don’t enjoy them as a sewing project.

I need to stick the Remy together before I can try it, will bear in mind you lengthen it (thank you), I tend to like things longer.

DuchessNope · 02/06/2024 16:40

I’m making a jumpsuit today! It’s the first time I’ve tried it. It’s the Paper Theory Zadie one.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 02/06/2024 17:19

The cursed dress is finished and was a pain from start to finish. Not sure I dare try it on tbh.

NutellaEllaElla · 02/06/2024 17:20

Ooh good luck, hope it goes well @DuchessNope !

I'm planning my next make and given how little time I have and how long it'll likely take me, i'm doing the Luana apron dress, but with pleats instead of gathers. I won't be able to even print and tape the pattern for another couple of weeks though and i'll have to brave the tape measure!

If I was being lazy, do you think I could avoid making a toile if I make the dress a size or so bigger, tack it together and then cut it down a size or whatever as needed?

I mean I’m pretty lazy so nobody should really take my advice but I tend to find this approach works! Especially if there are finished garment measurements as well as sizing.

PickAChew · 02/06/2024 21:07

Professional dressmakers often use extra large seam allowances for fitting, @NutellaEllaElla and that pattern looks to need the fitting around the waist and bust. I would suggest sizing up the skirt part as you have pockets to consider, add extra length to the waistband (it looks to be straight, rather than curved) and increase the seam allowances of the bodice. It might just be quicker to toile the bodice with a mock up of a waist band, rather than having to unpick, though, as you will want to make sure those darts are in the right place and nothing can fall out of the sides.

Daffyyellow · 02/06/2024 23:54

Remy Raglan toile complete! Cut in the ad breaks of BGT, sewn between 10 and 11. Made with the 2 sizes of gingham navy double gauze, with the larger gingham out, bound the neck with plain navy bias tape sewn so that a narrow strip shows. I sewed according my my measurements and it’s fine, in future I will lengthen about 3 inches I think. Much prefer this dg fabric as a Remy than as an Olivia!

GnomeDePlume · 03/06/2024 08:08

@Daffyyellow that is impressive turnaround!

Having said I had finished my holiday sewing I realised I hadnt got anything to put medication in. DH & I have entered the tablet taking age since last going on holiday.

So on Saturday I made a pouch. Then realised it was nowhere near large enough. So yesterday I made another much larger pouch

Frumpyunicorn · 03/06/2024 09:43

Well done @Daffyyellow I have almost finished mine but still need to hem. It is a lot quicker if you don't do the split front. It is my first time sewing double gauze and I found it a really nice sew will definitely use more. I am working on a toile adding a gathered skirt to a remy top so if that works out I might use double gauze for the dress.

I’ve got a small pile of fabric that I’ll never use and will dispose of somehow and a slightly bigger pile of fabric that’s been stashed long enough and needs to be used. The task of matching patterns starts.

I toiled an Etty camisole yesterday but I’m not sure it’ll work for me as it isn’t as bra friendly as the trusty Ogden. So I’ll have a couple of new Ogdens out of the stash. The rest of the wovens may end up as LN cadence or rhapsody. The knits will be LN forte in various views but I’m holding off on stretch sewing until my coverstitch arrives and I’ve practiced. I’ve got some crinkle polycotton that may make a kinjarling.

The weather has got to me and I’ve just booked a week in Turkey for September. I’m ok for swimwear but quite fancy a new one piece so that’s on my to do list.

Hiddendoor · 03/06/2024 11:16

I've cut out a tshirt in some Graziela Jersey with mini hearts. I love their fabric patterns - lots of 70s style fruit and hearts on them - but can only justify buying from their sale. I'm going to make a t-shirt using an Ottobre pattern from the summer magazine. Not used it before but matched the front and back size wise with my rubbed off pattern and hopefully have the right size.

I need to make some vest tops and short sleeve tshirts as I don't have nearly enough of them. I've quite a few nice blouse type tops but not enough casual ones.

Next step is to finish a toile of shorts (I think fibre mood pattern. Started then stalled last year so can't remember!) And if they work out well, I'll make a second pair in good fabric then a pair of trousers.

kittykarate · 03/06/2024 11:27

I haven't got up to much sewing, I have just impulse bought a tshirt pattern in the hopes of reducing stash mountain (8 boxes and counting!).

I've also cut out a maxi dress from some unloved peach jersey, and a pattern I was uncertain about... if it comes together, then I've got a new nightie!

Jins · 03/06/2024 11:45

Ooh @kittykarate - nightwear!

That puts a whole new spin on my stash busting.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 03/06/2024 12:38

Hi all. I'm late to this thread, sorry. I've just had a pleasant read through all your updates.

Have any other bag makers tried this stuff. https://www.empressmills.co.uk/in-r-form-wadding-single It's called In R Form by Bosal (such a weird name). It comes in single side iron on, double side iron on or sew in. I have found it really pleasant to work with, it sews through easily but gives a nice rigidity. I used it to make this little bowl.

Also, for Janomes you can get a bobbin case for shirring. I have one for my Horizon 8200. I haven't actually used it yet, but the plan is there. Grin

PickAChew · 03/06/2024 13:10

@BlackAmericanoNoSugar I used some to make a semi rigid cover for my overlocker that just came with a flimsy, ill fitting floppy plastic thing. Very easy to work with and the cover definitely stands up on its own!

PickAChew · 03/06/2024 16:55

I think I've shared that cover here before, btw but I've just fished it out of my photo archive.

I love that tree fabric @PickAChew

thesugarbumfairy · 03/06/2024 17:34

@BlackAmericanoNoSugar I have used Bosal, in the past, but tend to use style-vil now for 'best' bags, and headliner foam for everything else (thinner and slightly denser than bagmaking foam, but much cheaper) I actually run a class where we discuss the many different types of interfacing and stabliser. Its so confusing. Especially if a pattern is US - you need to know the UK equivalents of everything. Your Bowl is super-cute

Allthegoodnamestakken · 03/06/2024 19:05

Almost finished my hazel dress and I’m so pleased. Definitely wearable put the house. Just need to finish up with some hand sewing. All the quilting in the last few weeks has really helped with my ability to use the machine

NutellaEllaElla · 03/06/2024 21:24

Thanks @DuchessNope and @PickAChew. I am planning on doing a fair bit of tweaking to the pattern if I can so it may be that a toile is in order.

Thanks both. Will be making an overlocker cover ans will try to track this down.

So annoyed! I had a notification from the courier to say the coverstitch would be delivered yesterday. It wasn’t. Now they are saying tomorrow. I mean I’ve managed without one for many years but now I’ve pressed the button I want it here now!

I’ve got a few hours free today so I’m going to toile the Kinjarling dress bodice with some crepe that’s been hanging around in my stash for ages. It’s not very drapey or I’d make it a wearable toile. I’ve put the small amount of crepe that I have into the box for toiles. I’ve added another Superstar bra to the top of my to do list and I’ve just bought the Peppermint mag Brontë bathers pattern to make another bikini but I’ll probably just use the top as the bottoms are too high in the waist for me.

The weather has really messed up my sewing plans this year. The summer wardrobe does not need to be replenished
