Stitch and bitch thread #9. I have pressing concerns

Welcome welcome!

I've not made anything for ages after I screwed up the same thing twice. I'm gonna have another blimmin crack at it though! I've reconnected with another hobby and work is seriously getting in the way of everything I want to do, darn it.

Spent a couple of hours this afternoon attempting a seat cushion. After finally convincing my machine to sew through 7 layers of batting I didn’t account for how much it would puff up so it’s now to small. Adding the binding as a practice run and will re-attempt at some point.
now to find a use for 7 really tiny pieces of batting.

You could make it into a small makeup bag or glasses case.

Rosenspants · 07/09/2024 11:36

@OperationalSupport May I ask about the FIbre Mood Frances? Did you stay stitch the neckline before adding the bias binding? It's a bit odd that it's not in the instructions. I think I am going to. I saw your post and looked up the pattern and quite fancied it for some pretty, floaty cotton that I have. The Fibre Mood website is awful and glitchy, though!

I am catching up and admiring everything that you are all sewing! I have run up a quick Ogden Cami as having a few days away in the sun next week. I am definitely getting better at facings.... (still feel like a total rookie, though!)

Ogden Cami

Lovely fabric @Rosenspants !

OperationalSupport · 07/09/2024 15:07

@Rosenspants that’s a lovely Ogden. For the Frances I didn’t stay-stitch, probably should have but I was using a tightly woven stable cotton so I chanced it. If I was using a finer fabric I definitely would. I found the bias neckline method unusual though it did turn out nicely.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 07/09/2024 16:00

@Rosenspants Beautiful!

Rosenspants · 07/09/2024 18:34

I did stay stitch the neckline in the end. It’s very delicate, fine fabric. It’s my first go at a bias bound neckline. A bit wonky donkey but hey…. I’m going to stop now, (my eyes are going a bit funny) and try to finish the side seams, sleeves and hem tomorrow.

That’s a gorgeous Ogden @Rosenspants. The other top looks great too but I’m a real Ogden fan.

I’ve got a few days of peace as DH is away with some friends for his ‘hobby’. Obviously it’s cycling but this is MN so hobby it is. I’m hoping to get through some remnant projects and an Ogden is highly likely to feature. I’m also going to make some adjustments to the rhapsody top and ballad blouse. I’ve made them both many times but I’ve got a feeling that I’d get a better result by sizing down and doing a FBA.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 08/09/2024 05:54

I made an insane Indigo with fabric from Lady Mcleroy. I wear big glasses and have a bob, so I can’t stop laughing about it. 😂

Always nice to see some clothes with personality @RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie

Lovely tops @Rosenspants Your Ogden definitely doesn’t look like it was made by a rookie!

I made a toile for what will hopefully become my first pair of handmade jeans. The toile looks like it’s an amazing fit from the front, but the back can only be described as a hot mess.

I spent most of yesterday googling and making adjustments, but nothing that Google suggested really made much sense (pretty sure I do not need a thin thigh adjustment!)). Today I visited my local bookshop and leafed through one of the Sewing Bee books and quickly found what I hope will be solution. The book was purchased on the spot, the pattern has been adjusted and now I’m taking a little break before I attempt my 2nd toile.

If I can muster the energy, I may sew up another Salto top today. At least I know that one fits!

Allthegoodnamestakken · 09/09/2024 07:28

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie I love that fabric

Jins · 09/09/2024 09:01

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie that is lovely fabric and it works brilliantly for that pattern.

MeAgainAndAgain · 09/09/2024 17:57

I have a bath towel where the edge has come off, I just want to have it so it won’t gray in the washing machine. If I do zigzag stitch on the edges will this be okay? I just want it to be functional, not pretty.

InMySpareTime · 09/09/2024 18:26

I'd rolled hem it or bind it, towelling frays easily and towels get pulled in all directions.

Thank you. I googled, the rolled hem looks a low thick, I only have a basic machine so I’m not sure if that would work. So I googled bias binding and came across this.

and it looks really nice, is it a faff to make? She makes it look easy, but I’m quite a beginner at the moment.

Thanks for the nice comments on the crazy fabric! I might even be brave and wear it out in public this week. Grin

InMySpareTime · 09/09/2024 20:36

@MeAgainAndAgain you can buy bias binding ready to use on a roll, which is much easier than making your own as a beginner.
As long as it's ironed evenly and you're careful not to stitch off the edge on the underside, you'll be fine.

MeAgainAndAgain · 09/09/2024 21:12

@InMySpareTime so if I sew one side on, then turn it over and do the other side, that would be okay? When you say ‘stitching off the edge on the underside’ do you mean attempting to sew it on in one go? I’m happy to do it twice if that’s easier for me.

InMySpareTime · 10/09/2024 06:00

If it's folded evenly and you don't stitch right on the edge you should be able to bind it in one go. The risk with the "sew then fold it over" strategy is you'll have to sew either perfectly straight twice or at least the same wonky. If the first pass goes arye you might not have enough binding to fold over in some places.

Brefugee · 10/09/2024 06:23

For a towel you can bind it like a quilt with straight cut fabric as you don't need the bias stretch.
If it is a thick towel you could make it a bit wider than bought bias binding so you are sure it's not being stitched too close to the frayed edges.

It may look quite nice!

CrimsonAlligator · 10/09/2024 08:35

Finished my 2nd Salto. Still love the fabric just as much as when I first saw it. It’s just so damn cheery! 😊

That is so lovely @CrimsonAlligator - not a pattern I'd heard of, combined with that fabric it looks so professional.

Hopefully I'll get some sneaky sewing in tonight - I have 2 tops that are 'in progress' that I really could do with getting finished before my holidays! One is a Remy raglan, I've done the shoulder/side seams, but need to do hems/neck bindings. The other is the Friday Pattern company square necked top, which basically only has 2 shoulder seams done!

Chewbecca · 10/09/2024 10:14

I love that Salto!
