I'm looking for a new hobby but struggling to find what I want. I definatly don't want sewing and I already do a bit of crochet. I'd like something that creates something useful, I do like to cook. I've recently retired and have a little more time to commit to a hobby. Any suggestions?

Jewellery making?

Woodworking?

Epoxy resin?

flowerchild2000 · 17/12/2023 07:45

I recently started soap making and it's been really fun. My favorite part is experimenting with different plant ingredients for skin benefits and natural coloring. It doesn't cost much, is a lot like cooking or baking, there's loads of ideas online, makes great gifts and you can offset your costs by selling it too.

Talipesmum · 17/12/2023 07:47

Stained glass? Jam making? Woodwork?

Imtoooldforallthis · 17/12/2023 07:54

I don't have the room for woodworking or epoxy resin. Jewellry making is a possibility. I like the idea of soap making but don't actually use soap so feel I might lose interest pretty quickly. Thought about candle making but to make really nice ones it can bee a bit expensive. Jam making not a bad idea, except I'd end up giving it all away as I'm the only one in the house that likes it.

Looking at silver clay, but it is expensive.

How about card making? You might even be able to sell them

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 17/12/2023 08:50

Leatherwork
Woodwork or wood turning
Basket making
Band weaving

Sorry, just seen you don’t have room for woodwork.

If you already crochet take a look at fair isle knitting. It takes time to learn, and time to do, but you can make really beautiful and useful clothes. Take a look at Marie Wallin for inspiration.

I'm not a lover of card making for some reason I don't even like handmade cards.

love fair isle

Print making with linocut can be done at a kitchen table.

Or sign up to a local art class where there will be more facilities.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 17/12/2023 09:10

Natural dyeing? It would complement the Fair Isle very well.

If you can crochet and want to make something useful then why not crochet or knit for charity.

There are lots of hospitals that ask for crochet octopus' (octopi???) for premature babies, or hats. There's breast cancer charities that want knitted knockers which are given to women who've had mastectomies to fill bras, innocent smoothies every year ask people to knit or crochet little hats for the bottles to raise money.

Loads of charity projects out there.

Startingagainandagain · 17/12/2023 09:17

Get a sewing machine & start making your own clothes/cushions/curtains? you can create things from scratch or work out how to 'up-cycle' stuff you find in charity shops.

Or drawing/painting. You can do watercolour and pencil drawing if you only have a table to work on rather than messy oil painting.

Do you enjoy writing? maybe have a go at writing short poems or short stories.

Soapmaking is a really engrossing hobby, agree with @flowerchild2000 ,and you might find you do like the soap after all once you've started making it - but don't try selling it to offset costs unless you really know what you're doing. It's illegal to sell soap unless you get a Product Safety Assessment from a chemist, which is costly. You need to comply with Good Manufacturing Standards, product labelling, cosmetic-grade packaging, batch records - it's hard to do, and I would impossible to offset costs as a hobbyist without incurring many more.

My apologies! I'm in the US and selling isn't regulated here. Disregard that part!

Singsonggsu · 17/12/2023 18:19

If you like cooking then what about baking? Check out ‘Free Cakes for Kids’ online there might be a group near you. They bake birthday cakes for children who otherwise may not get one due to family circumstances. Such a lovely thing to do!

Pottery or linocut print making?

Ah, the US - it's a different world over there!

I had a friend who never ate cake but took up cake decorating and got really good at it. Crafted whole sugar paste creations and scenes.

Or, you could go out there and take up a new hobby completely unrelated to anything you have done before. I have done this and it turned out brilliantly. Found out new things I loved.

Fair Isle knitting has already been mentioned, but what about knitting in general? Lots of useful things you can make - more so than with crochet, imo. Plus if you already crochet, you will have yarn on hand, so you'll only need to get needles. It's a bit cheaper than crochet, too, in that crochet uses more yarn than knitting does, and knitting is slower, so takes up more time (a good thing in my book, as it's my only hobby these days).

Good luck on your search!
