Great punning Nutella!

I hope everyone’s having fun planning their autumn/winter sewing. Anyone making Christmas presents?

pastabest · 29/08/2022 07:47

Hello all

Yes I'm making some oodies/wearable blankets for various family members that have requested them. Sign of the times!

Great punning. Yes the crashing issue is mumsnet generally but I've found it's significantly worse on longer threads. I could barely open the last thread in recent days.

NutellaEllaElla · 29/08/2022 08:03

I am in love with this brussel sprout Christmas wreath except I don't need a wreath and while it's more felting than sewing, I would love to make some for baubles for gifts and a garland for me to decorate with.I reckon it's doable but never done anything like it before.

Hi everyone! I’d love to join you all. I’m on a sabbatical from my business and am taking up sewing as a hobby.

I bought myself a sewing machine and am sitting down this week to learn. I am using YouTube lessons for now because classes aren’t available where I am until late September.

My goal is to make myself gorgeous shift dresses in unusual prints that are totally unique 😁

Wish me luck!

NutellaEllaElla · 29/08/2022 08:18

Oh good luck @LadyCampanulaTottington! I was a complete newbie when I started in Feb last year. It's a steeeeeep learning curve! But go slowly, and google everything! It's a new world with a new language. Oh and forget your dress size. It means nothing here!

Lucky you taking a sabbatical, my job badly gets in the way of my sewing Grin

Thank you @NutellaEllaElla I’m excited to get started 😁

Hello LadyCampanula.

I highly recommend going on a 'get to know your sewing machine' type course if one is available or if you can find on you tube.

It's the one thing I didn't do that I wish I had when I started out dressmaking as it probably would have saved me a lot of time over the years learning as I went along.

my top tip would be start with non stretch fabrics first and a simple pattern with very clear instructions. Something like the Jamie pyjama bottoms from Tilly and the buttons in a nice cotton fabric.

what sort of things are you hoping to sew... once you do a deep dive into the world of fabrics and indie pattern companies it's easy to get very very carried away Grin

have you got a fabric shop locally as they are often extremely good places to go and get advice.

TheFabledSnake · 29/08/2022 08:30

Hi! I've only just started, having had my machine for less than a week. I've made some hair bows for my daughter, a small pouch and a tail for a costume.

Still pretty fuzzy on the details but learning as I go.

SewinginIreland · 29/08/2022 08:31

Hello everyone. I didn't know there was a sewing section so this is my first post here.
As it's one long thread, how does it generally work? I'm used to being on sewing forums and Facebook sewing groups. Smile

SewBiased · 29/08/2022 08:47

Hi hoping you don’t mind someone new on the thread?

I have been sewing for 7ish years, I sew mainly clothes for myself, but I also do make things for my children.

I am just trying to get out of a sewing slump, I haven’t sewn at all over August. Just picked up my last unfinished project last night, which is a shirred dress, which is probably not the best to be making as we move into autumn, but I am never good for sewing for the season. I only managed one successful line of shirring though, so not sure this is going to be the quick project I thought it was.

Jins · 29/08/2022 09:27

Tailor tacking my place. Welcome to all the new people. I look forward to hearing about your makes.

I've done very little sewing since June. Much less than this time last year. I’m hoping to get going properly in September with a bit more stash busting so there’ll be a few pairs of trousers and some tops for starters. I’ve got plans for a couple more Barrett bralettes which are all I wear nowadays. I’ve been debating making jeans. I have a pattern and suitable denim but I haven’t worn jeans for years and I’m not sure I’d wear them if I made them

NutellaEllaElla · 29/08/2022 11:58

Welcome all newbies! There are no rules here. We chat about our projects, show off our completed items and traditionally, I ask a bunch of stupid questions and these lovely knowledgable and experienced ladies help me out Grin.

@TheFabledSnake I echo what pastabest said about getting to know your machine. I was very put off sewing because i'm not good at intuitively knowing how machines work!
@SewBiased I pretty much only sew for myself too, a. This is a lot of effort and very time consuming! and b. I don't need the stress of living up to other people's expectations! And also, I need to be excited about a project and I get discouraged easily by errors/tricky bits.

@SBAM here's my very wearable toile of the Gioiello top. I think I be wearing it with the bow at the back as designed, I know some people wear it the other way round but it's a bit booby for me. I didn't fancy the keyhole front so left that out. My plan will be to make it in my shimmery eveningy fabric and it'll be nice for winter but I could also make it in loads of different fabrics, I'm a big fan of it. It's good but also a bit annoying that the instructions are only detailed in YouTube videos so I made some notes as I went along so I don't have to keep rewatching them.

Wow @NutellaEllaElla that’s fantastic! I like it both ways round on you.

SBAM · 29/08/2022 13:36

@NutellaEllaElla looks brilliant! Like Jins I agree it looks great both ways, but with the bow at the front would definitely be more fancy evening attire than Tuesday morning trip to the park for me.

oneoffshowoff · 29/08/2022 13:48

NC for this, but just thought I'd show off my latest cross stitch.

Thanks for the welcome! Great skills Nutella, love the top. I'm going slow with the projects and am checking videos because they're better than the instructions received with the machine

CalamityClam · 29/08/2022 17:49

Can anyone please help with this? I’m stumped before I even start 🤔

I'm sewing a top (New Look 6622), view B, and it’s asking me to trim fabric away. I have no clue.

I'm sewing a top (New Look 6622), view B, and it’s asking me to trim fabric away. I have no clue.

So view B is sleeveless and the pattern pieces are designed with a seam allowance for views A and C to attach the sleeves to the bodice.

because view b is sleeveless you don't need that seam allowance so you can just trim it off the edges of the pieces where it would makes the armhole (so not all the way round that pattern piece, just the edge of the piece which will be armhole).

CalamityClam · 29/08/2022 19:16

@pastabest OMG thank you. That makes so much sense, I’m now a bit embarrassed 😳!!

kittykarate · 29/08/2022 19:17

I've only done a few hours sewing this weekend. I've done a chunk of the swimming costume, 'just' have the neckline and leg elastics to do.

pastabest · 29/08/2022 19:20

Just to add, if you are worried about making a mistake it won't matter too much if you just don't do it.

It just means your armhole will be slightly too 'long' at the end but depending on how the armholes are finished you either can fold it up into the hem or the bias binding, or trim it off at the end and then hem/bind it. Or just leave it.

Don't be embarrassed! I saw your question as soon as you posted it and didn't reply 'cos I didn't have a clue Grin. Glad someone was able to help.

@oneoffshowoff Wow that is impressive and very pretty, well done!

Love the new thread title!

I have made my first garment in my new sewing room: a Montrose top from Cashmerette. Quite good fun to do. It also gave me the chance to try out welted seams. Overall look is a bit 'scrubsy' but I think that is down to my figure.

The pattern comes with different bust and bicep sizes which is useful for plus size clothing.

@NutellaEllaElla that top is amazing! I love the idea of a top which can be worn either way round.

@SBAM not going to be making presents but I am going to be making Christmas cushion covers. I thought they would be rather fun for when we put the tree up in December.
