These fabrics don't go, do they?

I ordered these to make a duvet cover for DD.

The dragon panel is too narrow for the duvet cover so I'd planned to put the sky one as a border to make up the width and length around it. It looked ok in my photoshop collage, but now I've seen them in real life, I'm not so sure they go. Would I be better surrounding the dragons in a plain colour? If so, which colour would you try to match - dark or light?

I don't think they go, sorry.
I would buy some plain dark fabric and turn that into the surround.

NannyR · 04/07/2022 10:32

I agree, a dark, plain colour would look better. Maybe you could use the sky pattern fabric for the reverse. Or buy a plain duvet cover and sew the dragon fabric on as a panel.

Burgerqueenbee · 04/07/2022 10:33

I would probably pick a black cotton to go around it and use the sky fabric for something else (the joys of internet fabric shopping - it's never quite what you think it will be, does my head in!).

dudsville · 04/07/2022 10:34

I don't think they do either. Would white be OK?

Notagain76 · 04/07/2022 10:37

100% don’t go. Maybe go for a plain background, I’d probably go white, cream or you could try a brighter bold plain colour. What colour is DD bedroom?

NiqueNique · 04/07/2022 10:42

As pp have said...no, they really don’t go.

You could go either dark or light but I think it’d be much nicer with a darker panel on either side. The pattern would be framed nicely and it would ground it a bit which I think is important with very striking/bright colours.

RockinHorseShit · 04/07/2022 10:48

I like them together & think they do work well, on trend & better than boring old plain, that's for sure. I think it might work better if you edge the seams with ribbon, gimp etc to frame the 2 fabrics better

FoxyLadyBoutique · 04/07/2022 10:48

Navy border to match the dark blue in the dragon print.

sleepymum50 · 04/07/2022 11:00

What about trying a plain border between the two colours. Play around with the thickness of the borders, and amounts of the patterned fabric.

id probably go for dark, black or navy. You could go for a mid tone, and try and match the blues - it would be very intense, but more in line with your original intention of having just the two colours.

its been suggested before to do mock ups, using sheets, pillowcases, dresses etc using the desired colours. Then leave it laying around, so you keep seeing it in passing. The automatic reaction you get, will tell you if it’s working.

NiqueNique · 04/07/2022 12:13

Do you have enough of each fabric to double up a length and do one side of each pattern? So effectively two duvet covers in one. That could work well.

OMGOMGOMGHELP · 04/07/2022 13:55

Do you have enough of each fabric to double up a length and do one side of each pattern?
No, I could only get enough to do a panel for one side of the cover and one side of the pillow case unfortunately. I've loads of the sky as I was going to use it for the other side.

What colour is DD bedroom?
White and wood if you can imagine it without the covering of lego and stuffed toys.

Ok, I was thinking dark too. But questioning myself as my judgement is clearly somewhat lacking! I think I'll go into a shop for this part.

Yes that’s probably a good idea - I’d suggest bring your fabric with you so you can be sure you’re happy with the match.

OMGOMGOMGHELP · 05/07/2022 09:54

This is some fabric I got for something else but didn't use in the end. Would that work. Plain or clouds? I can't decide now!

I've had it out on the floor all morning, walking past it and the clouds are growing on me! Although the plain looks more imposing.
I like them both!

what would 10 year old you prefer?

OP posts:
RockinHorseShit · 05/07/2022 10:05

Pretty sure a year 10 would prefer the mixed prints one as it looks way more fresh & young

KarrotKake · 05/07/2022 10:10

I prefer the plain. But I'm boring, and have magnolia walls!!

cottagegardenflower · 05/07/2022 10:11

No different shades of blue sadly. It's incredibly difficult to match online

NotMeNoNo · 05/07/2022 10:12

Try framing the panel and border with narrow plain strips so the prints don't compete?

cottagegardenflower · 05/07/2022 10:13

Plain is best

OMGOMGOMGHELP · 05/07/2022 10:27

@cottagegardenflower No different shades of blue sadly. It's incredibly difficult to match online
the first or the second? The plain dark one matches with the dark dragon wing and the cloudy one has some of the same bright blues in both cloud and dragon.

@NotMeNoNo I shall have to try and see what that looks like. It's only my second large project so I was hoping to keep it as simple as possible!

Poppins2016 · 05/07/2022 10:35

My instant gut reaction is dragons + plain blue border.

You could perhaps do dragons with plain border on one side, then clouds on the other?

RichardsGear · 05/07/2022 10:39

Plain without a doubt - looks very striking. Having both patterns looks like neither nowt nor something.

WinterMusings · 05/07/2022 10:47

The plain from the second set of photos looks good on my screen. The others look far too busy (IMO).

OMGOMGOMGHELP · 05/07/2022 10:48

@Poppins2016 the other side will be spectacularly cheesy and garish! I didn't take a photo yet. I've enough of the dragons to do a panel in the centre of the cover with about 25 cm border plus one side of a pillow case. It was the last of a print.

OP posts:
MyOtherProfile · 05/07/2022 11:18

Definitely not the patterned fabric. Sadly I don't think that dark blue works either. It's not the right blue. I would try to find the lighter blue and border with that.
