The band had been cut off and replaced with black bias binding. It works - just.

For a tunic it makes a bloody marvellous dress. The longer sides are just on knee length. However I love it. It fits across high bust perfectly and it’s actually making me look slimmer. This is going to be a holiday staple so I’ve done extra top stitching here and there so it will drip dry and I’m going to do a narrow hem at the arm holes. It does fit over my head so I’ll not bother with buttonholes.

Well done @Jins, that's looking good!

I am waiting for an invisible zip foot to arrive so I can continue with a sundress that I am making although having tried it on, I now have to shorten the bodice by about 2 inches. The same bodice that having made a quick toile, I decided needed lengthening...by about 2 inches ConfusedGrin

Jins · 12/02/2022 16:19

Complete, pressed and in the wardrobe ready for the first festival of the year in may.

Next should be the black trousers but I’m more inclined to clear some more offcuts

EATmum · 12/02/2022 17:27

Can I join you guys? I've been keeping myself (relatively) sane by sewing over the last nine days of Covid isolation. I've made a new suit for a new job (start in a week) and a new top - from a combination of Simple Sew Jackie O jacket, Maven Patterns Somerset top and Victory Patterns Esther Trousers (I can't call them 'pants' sorry, too British). Far from perfect but it feels very good to have something to show for this time of intensely frustrating isolation!

toomuchlikemyusername · 12/02/2022 19:13

Hello @EATmum and welcome.
Wow, a suit! That sounds quite a task. Good luck for your new job 👍.

What sort of festival are you off to @Jins? Music?

My zip foot arrived along with another 10 ( mixed pack ) most of which I have absolutely no idea what to use them for! Will google at some point.

Jins · 12/02/2022 19:32

We’re off to the lechlade festival @toomuchlikemyusername. One of the highlights of my year and sadly missed for the last two. We try to get to a couple of the smaller music festivals every year

Jins · 13/02/2022 08:44

Welcome @EATmum. They look like great patterns to put together. Hope the new job goes well.

I picked up a lovely free pattern for a cami last night from frugalisima’s latest upload on YouTube. The scalloped edge looks like the sort of challenge I fancy.

Welcome welcome @EATmum, I'm very impressed by your suit making skills and productivity!

That scalloped neckline is beautiful Jins.

That's a lovely cami top Jins.

Today I'm cutting out a Belvedere waistcoat pattern (Thread Theory) for my husband. It's been promised for over a year ... 😇

NutellaEllaElla · 13/02/2022 09:37

Good luck, are you doing a colourful lining?

Lovely cami pattern Jins. I always like a free pattern! I watch Frugalisima quite often and like that she focuses on free or thrifty options.

It's a rainy day here so I think I will be able to crack on with my sundress and also finish the hemming on a top.

Good luck with the waistcoat EATmum.

Jins · 13/02/2022 13:01

The first featured pattern on frugalisima’s latest was a gorgeous blouse by a French pattern company but I rather fear I’d look like a ship in full sail.

Today is repair and improve day so I’ve fixed a couple of t shirts for DH and DS2’s work trousers. I then dug out two pairs of short culottes I made in 2020 and stitched through the elastic on both as they have a tendency for the elastic to roll in the casings. It makes them look more professional.

Tomorrow I’ll start on something but I’m not quite sure what it will be

EATmum · 13/02/2022 13:17

I've got some amazing lining fabrics that I picked up on Fabworks a while back. I used one for my suit jacket and I'm using the leftovers for the waistcoat lining and back. Think parrots ...!

Lovely!

Hello everyone, please could I jump on your thread and ask for some help?

I wondered if anyone would be kind enough to suggest whether this is repairable. It’s a 100% cotton super king duvet cover which managed to rip in the washing machine Sad any suggestions very gratefully received! I have got a secondhand Brother sewing machine but I’m a total newbie Blush

InMySpareTime · 13/02/2022 16:16

You'll need a fabric patch to stabilise it at the very least. Is it on a bit of the duvet you'll feel while going to sleep, or is it where people will see it?
The level of fixing will be affected by how neat you want it to look vs how smooth you want it to feel.
If you'll see it, you could stabilise it with a broad ribbon sandwiching the tear, to make a feature from the repair.
If you'll feel it, a patch on the inside and zigzag stitch along the tear line should hold it without feeling too scratchy.

EATmum · 13/02/2022 17:55

Some really thin iron-on interfacing would work if it's not a bit you'll see.

Jins · 14/02/2022 09:16

Can’t add to the suggestions above I’m afraid. I think I’d probably stitch a contrasting band across the whole thing.

The site with the free scalloped cami pattern has a 50% sale today. www.tammyhandmade.com/
There’s a few nice looking things but broadly similar to patterns I already have so I’m resisting temptation

Tinuviel · 14/02/2022 16:06

Lovely cami, @Jins - I have downloaded it and it is now in my 'to do' pile. Everybody is very busy! I have nearly finished a practice run on a 'Regency dress' using a New Look pattern. A group of us are planning on going to the Jane Austen festival in Bath, so need appropriate costumes! It's not a Regency pattern but I'm fiddling with it!
I have also bought fabric and a jumpsuit pattern for DD but the fabric is very slithery and I'm scared, so currently ignoring it on the grounds that I forgot to buy thread. Grin

Jins · 15/02/2022 10:27

The regency style dress sounds like fun. I guess most empire style patterns give the basic silhouette and then you can go mad with ruffles and sleeves.

A photo will be required Grin

I didn’t make a start on anything. The intention was to do something that took advantage of the machines threaded with black but as always stash and patterns haven’t aligned

Tinuviel · 15/02/2022 19:17

I would put up a photo of the practice run but as it's muslin and the skirt is only 1 layer, it's very transparent!! It will make a lovely petticoat! But it's worked and looks suitably 'Jane Austen'. Unfortunately, I am more the age of Mrs Bennett than Miss Elizabeth Bennett, so I'll have to practise having the vapours! Grin

I also bought some lace at Boyes as they're selling off loads of stuff (lace/bias binding/ribbon/buttons/zips!) and some fabric to make an actual dress! However, Simplicity now do a 'Bridgerton' pattern, so I'm not sure whether to get that as well!

And I remembered to get the thread for DD's jumpsuit, so no excuses left on that one!

NutellaEllaElla · 15/02/2022 20:24

You know, the older I get, the more I appreciate Mrs. Bennet's struggle with her nerves and the obvious solution to take to ones bed.

Especially with 5 daughters! Imagine the hormones in that house! And wearing tight stays making everyone cranky!

Jins · 16/02/2022 09:59

I’ve just found an old sundress that I’ll never wear again so I’ve cut the skirt off to make a top out of it.

It’s not quite long enough to make a tank style so I guess it’s another Ogden 😂

SBAM · 16/02/2022 14:44

I’ve had to de-prioritise altering my skirt, child number 1 (after several weeks of being sure she wanted to wear last year’s costume) has decided she wants to be the witch from room on the broom for world book day.
