I’ve finished!!!!

I used a ready made drawstring threaded through the waistband on the inside. Much more secure now.

NutellaEllaElla · 13/04/2022 06:58

Well done everyone, I'm still busy and in search of my sewjo.
The sewing Bee is back on Wednesday the 27th of this month.

shirt/jacket/not scrubs is now assembled. I have decided I need to bind the seams. The fabric is unbleached calico and I suspect it may fray.

Nice shape jacket @GnomeDePlume

I had a spare hour yesterday so decided to try the Sinclair Kiki briefs pattern I bought last year
sinclairpatterns.com/products/kiki-underwear-briefs-knickers-undies-pdf-sewing-pattern

The fit was spot on first time and I mastered picot elastic. I’m going to use the pattern for bikini bottoms using the control waistband.

kittykarate · 17/04/2022 18:08

My sewing this weekend, 2 x toiles of a tankini top ( better elastic needed ! ) and a pair of leggings that will end up as work at home clothes when the weather warms up. Lycra £10 for 3m on poundametre. I have enough left to have a try at the bikini bottoms too.

kittykarate · 17/04/2022 18:09

Forgot to attach picture... doh!

GnomeDePlume · 18/04/2022 07:44

That is really good @kittykarate. I love the top especially.

I have nearly finished another V neck scrubs top. This time in some of the batik fabric from poundametre.

Now I am helping DD to get started on a dress with a fitted bodice. We are using a couple of free patterns from Mood Sewsiety.

Nice work both!

I made bikini bottoms using the Kiki pattern with the control waistband and I’m not wild about them. The waistband is too tight and it’s causing the sort of overhang I wanted to avoid. Not the end of the world as I’ll be wearing them under the long shorts I made.

Next up will be a swimwear top but not a tankini or anything close fitting. I’m currently measuring my sports bras to work out where I need to put a shelf bra

dubyalass · 19/04/2022 19:46

I ordered from Poundametre ten days ago but nothing’s been dispatched yet. Is that normal?

dubyalass · 19/04/2022 19:47

And nice work everyone! I made a couple more things over the weekend, will try to upload a photo later.

Jins · 20/04/2022 08:19

Poundametre can take ages to dispatch. It was over two weeks before they dispatched the not powermesh I ordered.

I cut out the bralette from love notions Luna loungewear in the scraps of my swimwear fabric yesterday. It’s a bit of a patchwork at the back. I didn’t have enough for the bindings so I’ve rummaged and found some white Lycra for them. Just about to test twin needle stitching on my new machine.

GnomeDePlume · 20/04/2022 08:22

@dubyalass I found poundametre seemed to take a while to get themselves in gear to despatch my fabric. I think another poster found that as well. Not sure if they batch up their despatches and do them all at the same time.

This is my second batik fabric top. So far I have made 8 tops from the same pattern! I do like to get my money's worth! Mind, the pattern itself is starting to get a bit ragged round the edge.

We are going on holiday in a couple of months. If I get lost at least my family will be able to describe me easily enough (fat, middle aged and wearing a v necked top).

Lots of lovely makes! I really like your batik tops, @GnomeDePlume! I'm currently making another summer dress but the yarn has now arrived for DD and I to make a crocheted baby blanket, so it might be a while before I get back to my sewing!

Jins · 20/04/2022 19:29

Swimwear top is going well. It’s a fairly easy pattern - it didn’t go well the last time I tried it because FOE wasn’t my friend. Making bands out of some fairly sturdy Lycra has worked better.

Tomorrow I’ll be finishing the bands with a twin needle and working out where to put the under bust band.

Jins · 21/04/2022 09:26

Almost finished. Just need the bottom band but it stays pretty well in place without. The patchwork back and the failure to match the side seams due to it sliding in the overlocker won’t matter as it will be under a long vest top

kittykarate · 21/04/2022 11:33

That looks absolutely brilliant Jins!

kittykarate · 21/04/2022 11:38

Poundametre have been shocking lately, my last couple of orders have taken 3 weeks to arrive.

Literally as I've typed this I've just got a shipment notification for my order from 5 April - so pretty much bang on target for 3 weeks for it showing up at my door by the time Hermes have kicked it around the depot a bit.

Jins · 21/04/2022 12:08

I’m really pleased. I’ve managed to make the top, long shorts and a pair of bikini bottoms out of a metre of swimwear fabric. So I’m set for paddleboarding without spending a fortune

I’m still trying not to buy new fabric and work from my stash but the not powermesh from poundametre has put me off. I’ve got a sewing list pinned up and I’d like to get a few more things ticked off after my swimwear diversion.

I’m also rummaging through my patterns to find something suitable for a school reunion I’ve foolishly agreed to attend

dubyalass · 21/04/2022 23:47

Thanks all for the similar Poundametre experiences. I guess I'll just wait and see.

Some lovely makes here - particularly impressed with the swimwear, Jins! I have just finished a Simplicity shirt and a Tessuti dress. I sized down for the dress per people's comments on Instagram and I think it's a bit small on the bust, but it might be because the shoulder seams are closer to my neck than I'm used to.

I think my next make will be a sweater/hoodie and some jeans. I live in jeans and I have four pairs that are all threadbare and borderline indecent, so could do with a replacement pair. I might see if I can fashion another pair out of the various pieces of the old ones.

GnomeDePlume · 22/04/2022 06:16

I love both of those makes there dubyalass.

I think I will be making another jacket but in a Paisley print. This for a wedding in September. Bright blue fabric with black trousers and black v neck top (what else!) underneath. I rather liked some floral fabric but family vote was that I would look like a sofa. Harsh but true.

dubyalass · 22/04/2022 07:22

Thanks!

I am a bit wary of florals/looking like a sofa too. I read somewhere that women over 50 should avoid florals but I think that's a load of rubbish. I seem to suit a large, bold print but have to choose colours carefully because I have grey hair and can look really washed out. Most of my wardrobe is in shades of blue and grey (I'm a 'cool winter") but I'm planning some pinks/corals to warm me up a bit!

Jins · 22/04/2022 08:09

Women over 50 should avoid florals!😱I wear little else and my stash is full of florals. Mind you I found that when I turned 50 I also stopped caring about what I should or shouldn’t be wearing

Great makes dubyalass. Making jeans out of old jeans sounds like fun. I’m looking forward to seeing them’

I’ve looked at my list of things I need to make and I’m uninspired. Possibly because I need to make them. I may just run up a couple more pairs of knickers while the walking foot is on my machine

GnomeDePlume · 22/04/2022 08:42

There seem to be an awful lot of 'rules' around what women over 50 should wear. I got back into sewing because someone seemed to have decided that what fat women over 50 should be wearing was plastic clothes, ideally in some sort of animal print. I suspect that a lot of the rules are really saying 'fade into the background, disappear, dont stand out'. Perhaps the animal print is as a form of camouflage.

toomuchlikemyusername · 22/04/2022 10:14

Some great makes on here. Loving the swim top @Jins and the dress is fab @dubyalass

Hoping to be a bit more active on this thread now I've finally got my sewjo back post hols.

Currently halfway through a dress which I think will be a little too tight around the shoulders. Currently trying to figure out if I need to start doing a broad back adjustment as standard on my makes. Would love love love to do some sort of in-person fitting class.
