Can I join in? I also want to find a crafty hobby. In large part so that I have something to do another than scrolling on my phone in the evening. It would be great if I ended up with something that is of some use. I was looking at craft mags earlier today and thought that looks great but what do I do with a knitted toy fox when I've finished?

I'm self taught with crochet. Still not as good as some amazing projects you see out there, but we have blankets, scarves etc. that I've made. I'm the least artistic member of my family, but I'm happy to tick along with it and it's very soothing.

Look up beginners craft on youtube and see what you fancy.

Origami? All you need is a piece of paper.

Calligraphy - beautiful writing.

Embroidery.

Felting isn't complicated, what about that? You could start with something really small and straightforward to see whether you like it first.

Making tealights is very simple, that might be something else to try. There are also some great beginners embroidery kits, I've used Paraffle paraffle-embroidery.com/ and Jiggery Pokery jiggery-pokery.biz/collections/embroidery-kits

They both offer support/videos if you're stuck!

Seconding cross stitch. I'm not arty either but it's easy and addictive.

Card making - you can buy kits really easily and then start designing your own.

The local library has lots of useful art and craft books. Alternatively search online and check out your local bookstore as well. Or you can see if you can find art magazines in supermarkets. You can even discover art tutorials on YouTube etc.

If I'm sitting I can't not be busy.
I take inspiration from Pinterest. I bought a hoop, cotton cloth, embroidery threads and I sit and embroider whilst the TV is on.

I also enjoy painting pebbles, which I do in the evening.

Making jewellery is a nice craft and fairy easy for beginners.

Just bumping this thread, tried knitting but a) got my knit and purl stitches the wrong way round and it looks a complete mess and b) puppy chases the wool or generally gets in the way

I junk journal, I make the journals from scratch and fill them with collage and ephemera. You just need paper, glue and whatever other items you'd like to use (paint, washi etc). Second hand books are your basic supply and patterned paper etc can be bought cheaply from the Works or similar shops.
YouTube has literally hundreds of videos on how to get started. I like Joie de Fi for basic ideas on putting together a journal.

Have you found a craft which suits you yet sandwiches77 and made a start? Another suggestion is patchwork as you only need a few squares, just nine small pieces of fabric would get you started.

There was a magazine article a while back where an intrepid beginner cut out about 7,000 small squares to make a quilt which is very off-putting - most of us start off with a pincushion.

I've signed up to an online knitting tutorial next week. I have a basic idea already just I still get in a muddle so hopefully I'll know what I'm doing by the end. I quite fancy having a go at watercolour painting so I might do that one for my birthday, not sure though, as I say I don't have any creative genes....

Skillshare does one month of free classes, it's great for dipping into and seeing what you fancy. I'm sure they have watercolour classes as well.
