Happy Friday indeed! My mum's scans came back all clear and she's been diagnosed with IBS. I mean - still not fun, but a lot less scary than what we expected!

@CrochetBug - I machine wash my handmade socks, but I never tumble dry them. What kind of wool was it?

Oh, that’s good news lazy! I’m glad it wasn’t more serious!

I accidentally washed and tumbledried a slipper made using non super wash wool CrochetBug, it took a while but it’s sort of stretched back again so it might save itself. Wool warehouse have a sale on this style craft sock yarn if those colours appeal to you www.woolwarehouse.co.uk/yarn/stylecraft-head-over-heels-allstars-all-colours

@lazylinguist that's fantastic news. You must all be so relieved, although IBS is no fun.

It was drops...something. Its alpaca which I think was the problem. It said not to machine wash but hand-wash only socks would be a bit crap. So I figured I'd make one and see what happened. It was definitely the wash that did it. It looked exactly the same after the drier. Oh well. We live and learn.

@FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack I've got some of that somewhere. There seems to be lots of variegated sock yarn that's cheap, but not so much plain coloured. One of the other drops ranges has some, but not so much choice. Oh well. They are only socks after all. No one sees them so the colours don't really matter!

I also made 1 baby Converse bootee. I'm not 100% happy with it, the pattern wasn't the best. But I think I can change the necessary bits very easily and make it better.

That's excellent news lazy, it must be such a weight off!

Our HT called me into her office today - one of our HLTA's is leaving, so one of our TA's is potentially stepping into her role, meaning there may be a TA role available & would I be interested? Well, um, definitely! It still all has to be approved & advertised properly but hopefully this time around I'll get somewhere since I have years more experience within the school than last time I tried for a FT position 🤞

The dinky Converse bootie is sweet CrochetBug, it's a shame about the shrunken sock though. The pattern's nice though.

Dd1 still hasn't looked at sock yarns with me, even though she asked for the ones I linked last night 🙄 I might just pick some for her at this rate 🤷‍♀️

NiceCardigan · 05/11/2021 21:44

So glad your mums scans were all clear @lazylinguist

Fingers crossed that the job works out @lucysmam

InTheNightWeWillWish · 05/11/2021 22:19

Glad your mum’s scans were OK lazy. Obviously IBS isn’t great but much better than the alternative!

ceochetbug you show off finishing a whole bootie and I’m still on the sole Wink It’s a shame your sock has shrunk. That’s a really nice pattern.

Good luck with the job lucysmam, sounds like a great opportunity.

Oysterbabe · 05/11/2021 22:27

That's great news lazy you must be so relieved.

I finished my mermaid, attaching all that hair was no joke 😅 I'm pretty happy with her.

NiceCardigan · 05/11/2021 22:32

That was quick @Oysterbabe! She’s great.

lazylinguist · 05/11/2021 22:47

Thanks everyone. We are so relieved, but pissed off with the gp. Apparently the specialist could barely contain his bafflement that the gp hadn't even suggested IBS as a possible diagnosis.

OMG @Oysterbabe - you are a crochet prodigy! That mermaid looks amazing - I really must have a go at amigurumi.

I've just watched a Friday night film with dh and the dc (Jumanji - the reboot, not the original. Love those films!) while winding more yarn balls from skeins. I'm using a chair back instead of my feet now, which is much more comfortable Grin.

Meant to say - as well as my 3 new knitting projects, I definitely need to have another go with your drop spindles @FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack! My nect spinning course isn't until 15th January and I need to not lose the feel for processing the fleece!

OP posts:
CrochetBug · 05/11/2021 23:13

Wow @Oysterbabe you made her quickly! She's lovely.

My sock hasn't shrunk as such. It actually fits perfectly. It's just lost its stretch and stitch definition. I can wear it, its just not easy to get on as it doesn't stretch over my heel.

Oysterbabe · 05/11/2021 23:37

Thanks!
I like the idea of making something useful, like clothes, but I also want to make like a rainbow unicorn Grin

I need to make 3 elephants. My kids will not stop fighting over my first one so I need to make a second to stop the arguments. My friend has asked me to make her one for an imminent grandchild and I need a gift for a baby shower in 2 weeks and think an elephant will be just thing Grin

lazylinguist · 06/11/2021 07:46

Wow, you're going to be busy @Oysterbabe!

OP posts:
lazylinguist · 06/11/2021 08:49

Yawwwnnn - I'm swatching for dh's hat. I hate swatching!

lucysmam · 06/11/2021 08:51

Your mermaid's lovely @Oysterbabe, are you still gifting her to your son's friend? Dd2 normally claims the first of anything I make, poor dd1 doesn't get a look in 🤣

I bought some more pins yesterday so am going to try blocking the house part of the house today. Hopefully there are enough this time!

MerylSqueak · 06/11/2021 09:04

Morning everyone.

Good news about your mum @lazylinguist. I'm very happy for you.

Good luck for the job @lucysmam. Im a TA working with Hearing Impaired children. I've taught at uni, as a secondary teacher, as a private tutor and now this. This is by far and away my favourite job. I love it! Also the worst paid! Hmm

I love the projects that have been posted.

lucysmam · 06/11/2021 09:15

Yeah, the pay's not brilliant but it'd be a step up from taking any and all temp contracts that come up. It'd take the pressure off constantly looking and applying too. I don't have much in the way of qualifications which doesn't help in finding a proper "grown up" job either.

I actually applied & was interviewed for this particular TA's job, three years ago, but she has a degree & I don't 🤷‍♀️ Hopefully more experience & loyalty to the school will help this time around.

MerylSqueak · 06/11/2021 09:47

It can be like that, @lucysmam. If a candidate has formal qualifications, they're obliged to take them, so fingers crossed this time it'll be yours. I totally get you about temporary contracts. I started on one and found it really stressful. Does your school do internal jobs? Ours does and it means it's pretty much a shoe in for people they like (you obvs Smile)

MerylSqueak · 06/11/2021 09:49

I've just done an interview recently. I can think of what I was asked if you like. Child protection definitely.

Oysterbabe · 06/11/2021 09:51

Yes lucysmam she'll be going to her new home tomorrow when we go to the birthday party. I hope she likes her.

I bought a massive 400g ball of grey wool in Aldi and my mother in law is taking the kids for the day so I'm ready to get elephanting Smile

lucysmam · 06/11/2021 10:12

@MerylSqueak that would be really helpful if you could remember what you were asked, thank you. I remember questions about safeguarding last time, I seem to recall one about a child struggling to engage in the lesson & how you'd encourage them to try the task. The rest escape me at the mo. I think it'll be advertised internally first off, there have been several positions filled that way lately, & I very much doubt there'll be much competition from elsewhere. There aren't many of us who aren't classroom based & I know, almost for certain, that the ladies I work directly with wouldn't be interested.

Aw, I'm sure the little girl will love her 🥰 @Oysterbabe.

CrochetBug · 06/11/2021 10:39

Good luck @lucysmam.

We're going to Cardiff for a Harry Potter thing. And to look for Torchwood (geek family alert)
The boys are currently giggling and singing along to Titanium, but pronouncing it Tit-anium HmmGrin

lucysmam · 06/11/2021 10:45

Thanks @CrochetBug. Your boys' version of Titanium sounds very much like dd1's 🤣

lucysmam · 06/11/2021 15:07

Yay, the house and doors are now drying out. They should be dry by tomorrow to put the first cottage together.

I was planning to do the ends of the second one today but ended up spring cleaning the living room & the day seems to have run away 🙄 I'll try and get one done this evening instead.
