It was a good move. All done and dusted bar the hand sewing which I’ll do in front of the tv tonight.
Having different height files is brilliant. I made these with no alterations at all and the rise is perfect. Next time I make them I’ll be going down to my normal size but I do like a loose fit trouser in the summer.

Palate now cleansed and tomorrow I’m going to try to sort the lyric bodice fitting issues

NutellaEllaElla · 07/07/2021 16:05

Oh that sounds amazing, I wish more had different height files, I always adjust for height and it NEVER works out as planned.

@NutellaEllaElla Sinclair patterns do height files for all their patterns. I’ve only just discovered them.
Not much that I fancied and an awful lot of knit designs but worth a look

NutellaEllaElla · 07/07/2021 16:15

What size would you choose if you were 35.5/27.5/39? This is a shirt dress. I have a small back and am tempted to go for the 8 even though the waist and hip measurements are smaller than mine in the size guide because there's loads of ease??

I'll look them up thank you @Jins

OP posts:

I’d go with the 8

NutellaEllaElla · 07/07/2021 17:23

Is 5 inches ease at the bust a lot? And then 10 inches at the hips?

OP posts:
Jins · 07/07/2021 17:34

It is a lot but the style is quite loose. You could probably get away with the 6.

It’s one to toile

PickAChew · 07/07/2021 17:41

Depends on the style of the dress. If it's fairly fitted at the shoulders then compare that part with something you like wearing in a similar style.

5" of ease is a decent amount for something unstructured though I reckon you could get away with the 6, depending on the style.
I'm starting the sew house seven tea house top, next and gave been wavering between the 10 and 12 (UK 14 and 16) because of the bust. It has lots of ease and I've seen a few blogged makes where people have declared their happiness with sizing down but I've not liked the way the structured yoke (with a belt straight under) squashes the boobs a bit. Then I saw blog posts by someone with similar proportions to me on top. The first two looked pretty good, though belt was quite snug under the bust. Then she made a 3rd one and added an inch in length to the yoke and the difference was remarkable - all the smugness had gone.

PickAChew · 07/07/2021 17:42

Snugness

NutellaEllaElla · 07/07/2021 19:05

Thanks, this is the dress and on the model, it doesn't look particularly loose on the bust.

Toile it is

I've actually just discovered that people post their makes on Instagram which is handy for seeing comments about adjustments they had to do, mistakes made etc.

My curtain fabric arrived, so just ordered the curtain tape and I'll get cracking on that as soon as I can. I need zips for the coordinating cushions, 8 in total. I'll find those at the weekend in the local store.

I want to finish my wool coat first though - it doesn't fray but the raw edges do shed a bit, so need to finish that, do a big wipe down of all the surfaces as don't particularly want red fibers all over cream chenelle fabric!

I've also two maxi-dresses in my pile, but those can get pushed to the back of the queue. And a bag. And a dress I want to clone!

Oh and if that's not enough, I'm moving house. FFS Grin

I understand your user name now, @drinkingallthewine :o

I have a to do list that will take me beyond Christmas, too. It's not a lot of items but there's some complex ones and I'm a slow sewer.

Jins · 08/07/2021 15:57

I have a pile of patterns I want to sew and a pile of fabric I want to use but there isn’t much connection between the two.

I’ve been hand sewing today, mostly hemming for my mother. She’s not a fan of a machined hem and although she’s grateful for the alterations I’m doing for her I’m sure she’d be happier with some invisible hemming.

This is all distraction from the job of fixing the lyric bodice

Jins · 08/07/2021 19:40

I’ve just finished getting boxes out of my wardrobe to sort and I’ve found two original 90s slip dresses! I’m making a pattern from one of them and it should just fit on my vibrant viscose.

That’s perked me up

NutellaEllaElla · 08/07/2021 21:22

Ooh lovely

Grin my list will always have several items on it.

I'm a slow sewer - or rather, I've learned over the years to slow myself down because it's often the case where when I rush, I make mistakes. I've been working on my coat since April as it's so tailored and loads of techniques I've never done before so I'm taking my time so as to get it perfect - and so far I'm beyond pleased with the result.
I've a few elements still to do - but really all that's outstanding is some shoulder/side seam tailoring, attaching the lining (almost sewed) and hemming. It's by far the most technical thing I've worked on and I'm pretty chuffed with it.

NutellaEllaElla · 11/07/2021 07:43

No sewing for me this weekend but i've cut out a toile, minus the collar, just to check for fit.

OP posts:
NutellaEllaElla · 11/07/2021 07:44

I wish I was brave enough not to bother with toiles, but this fabric in particular is precious so I don't want to risk messing it up.

OP posts:

I've been making the proper version of the dress I toiled last weekend and telling myself that I should make more toiles as it's made sewing this one a much more pleasant experience!

It's been nice to get the construction figured out in advance and I haven't had to unpick once. I've got the buttons and hem still to do but I only started making it last night and normally things take me forever.

My toile is wearable too so win-win.

Jins · 11/07/2021 11:09

All work has ground to a halt here

What a gorgeous kitty!

I'm definitely going to look out for cheap but wearable fabric so my toiles could be worn as well

Thanks. She’s a lilac British shorthair. Just under a year old and an absolute hooligan
