I've not done any sewing for a while so am off to the fabric shop for some inspiration. Got a few new patterns to try and am going to attempt tissue fitting for the first time... Confused

Lovely duby, I find the ideas and choosing your next project is the most exciting part.

Big eBaying day for me. I can’t cope with all the clutter from FILs house any longer.

My next project will be a toile for the love notions ballad blouse. I’ve just enough fabric left from my tempo sundress from the summer if I cut the yoke on the cross grain

HalleLouja · 15/01/2022 14:48

@JackieWeaversZoomAc I am looking forwards to making it. I have all the sleeve extensions too.

dubyalass · 15/01/2022 16:32

I bought a baby clothes pattern and some fleece fabric - going to make some things for a friend's baby with my various leftover bits of jersey and whatnot.

@NutellaEllaElla, I've posted pictures of the first 2 jackets. It's Simplicity 8172, a very easy and quick pattern! I made a reversible wraparound skirt last year out of this georgette and challis, so it will be nice to have something to wear with it!

NutellaEllaElla · 15/01/2022 20:14

I've just had a search through and I'm not sure I realised it was a jacket cos it looks quite light. Lovely though!

Hi ladies,

I’ve read the first few pages of the thread and am in awe of the things you make. Such clever talent. My DNan taught my DDad how to sew before he started school but sadly the tradition stopped there as I’ve never been able to.

I’ve come onto this board looking for some advice. I bought a lovely duvet cover a few weeks ago but found a rip on it the other day. We’ve done a very basic repair but after the first wash, the stitches are already coming undone.

Does anyone have some advice on the best way to repair, or at least stop this from worsening please?

I’ve attached a couple of photos - not the best light as it was late when we made the bed up. Please excuse the cat hair, don’t know how that has survived the tumble dryer Blush

Hi @GodspeedJune and welcome! I would probably use embroidery thread to put a small darn in it.

Tinuviel · 16/01/2022 01:55

@NutellaEllaElla, it's certainly not a jacket for this time of year! More something to throw on in summer when it's a bit colder than you expected.

Jins · 16/01/2022 08:36

@GodspeedJune I’ve done the same thing myself. Infuriating isn’t it?

Looking at the pictures your stitches are pulling the edges together. Is it a straight tear or more like a hole?

Either way I’d be removing your current repair and putting some spare fabric on the wrong side to stabilise the tear. It doesn’t need to be very thick. Then I’d stitch the edge of the tear to the backing fabric so it doesn’t pull then darn over the lot.

I’ll probably fall down a rabbit hole looking for instructions online

NutellaEllaElla · 16/01/2022 09:44

I might be inclined to put hemming web behind it.

Thank you Tinuviel Jins and NutellaEllaElla all so much.

It’s a straight tear Jins and not too big at the moment but I can see it getting worse if I don’t take action now. I’ll try to get something on the back. Then I’ll need to learn how to darn so wish me luck Smile

Tinuviel · 16/01/2022 14:08

@GodspeedJune - here's a youtube video that looks quite good. It's for a right-angle tear but you could apply it to a straight tear as well. She just uses normal sewing thread but double. I would always prefer to mend a cotton sheet with cotton thread but it depends on whether your duvet cover is cotton or poly cotton.

Tinuviel · 16/01/2022 14:21

And one for machine darning!

toomuchlikemyusername · 16/01/2022 16:28

Can I just say how lovely this thread is. You are all so supportive, helpful and encouraging.
I love seeing your makes. I'm a relatively new sewist; lockdown saw me dust off my machine and finally find the time and patience to have a go and now I am pretty much spending most of my free time either behind my machine, planning new makes or watching seeing blogs!
I've just finished a wearable toile of the Billie sweatshirt dress which I am very pleased with and am in the process of making The Heather Blazer by Friday Pattern Company which is coming together like a dream.
Hopefully the photos will upload....
