this seller here

We just did the fish pouch one and ds LOVED it - he was so excited and it took us about 45 mins to an hour, with him doing most of the sewing. He was skipping around going "I've sewed! I've SEWED!"

I think we are going to try the slippers next. They say from 5 + but ds is 4 and obviously needed me to help, but had no problem doing the stitches with me pointing where each one should go.

Meant to say, they would make lovely present or party bag item for this age group.

Awww they are really cute, DS is too young, but I might like to make a fish pouch, lol!

FrannyandZooey · 23/08/2007 10:15

This is just so it's on my threads when I get home. Access to the site you recommend is restricted from my office.

persephonesnape · 23/08/2007 12:24

those are lovely. I've bunged those in my favourite shops.

aloha · 23/08/2007 12:26

They look fab. Good idea for birthday presents.

Tillyboo · 23/08/2007 13:33

What a shame my dd is too young as these are fab, she's dying to have a go as she watches me sew. But, she does help me stuff my animals and helps me to tidy up my ribbons and wool etc.

So much better than sat in from of the tele. I'll have to investigate other crafty things for Xmas - dd will be 3.9 by then.

She's always painting, glueing and sticking but I'd like to find something else for her to do

Tillyboo · 23/08/2007 13:34

A good party bag option too - as long as you haven't got 30 children coming, would be a bit expensive !

Tamum · 23/08/2007 17:14

Oh yes, dd did the pink bag one a few years ago. I thought they were just available locally, that's good that they're so easy to get now. The range has increased a lot too

TooTicky · 23/08/2007 17:16

Ooh, I think we may need a crown or two.

FrannyandZooey · 24/08/2007 08:20

TooT I have had a guilty conscience since you posted

the instructions were really dire English - I have a strong feeling they have been made cheaply in China or something

Tamum · 24/08/2007 08:25

F&Z, I remember reading about them initially in Families magazine or something that definitely implied they were a local product. They might have been fibbing, or maybe it was a local importer, but I am wondering if something homemade-y has been ripped off, perhaps? They were certainly a lot more expensive than that. OTOH they would have copied the English if it had been a rip-off, presumably.

FrannyandZooey · 24/08/2007 08:30

I am looking for the packaging now

ok they are imported by a company called Bot international . Their website is www.bot-co.com. And in small letters it says "Made in Taiwan"

sorry TooT

you could make your own really easily with felt and a hole punch and some wool, I think? It's just these were so nice the way they came in a little set

TooTicky · 24/08/2007 09:44

Ah. Oh. Buying anything is just such a minefield, isn't it?

FrannyandZooey · 24/08/2007 21:16

Sorry. Yes [cringe]

morningpaper · 24/08/2007 21:18

thanks for that, great recommendation

fillyjonk · 25/08/2007 07:44

oh no are they unethical? This is the kind of thing that ds would love, aaargh.

I have really really tried to make my own stuff like this, as part of my non-buying-it aside. Here is the problem.

For a child of about 3/4, pos esp a boy, pos esp my boy, I dunno, it is imperative to have very clear places to put the thread.

What I did to try to make this stuff was to buy a single hole punch. I then applied this to felt. The problem was a. that the holes made weren't very good, but b. that there appeared to be no way to reach the recesses of the felt, so the detailing on the fish pouch would be not good.

Another problem I came up with was that I find planning this sort of stuff tricky for sewing stuff. I dunno how to explain that really, I have never learnt to sew and I don't have a sense of it, IYKWIM.

I also have to admit that my ds has much much more respect for things that come in polythene bags, not "ooh, look what mummy has made you. ". . He will often say, when I suggest an exciting project "that is a LOVELY idea mummy but couldn't we please just buy it?"

This is a child who has been raised to respect wool btw.

FrannyandZooey · 25/08/2007 09:10

Filly it was easy peasy, I bet you could make it. I could send you a sort of pattern if you like. Then you could put it in a plastic bag You can get a long reach hole punch, prob from Baker Ross? Will try to remember and have a look later. Other than the felt pieces it had lengths of wool, 2 stick on eyes, a child's needle, and odd instructions. Oh and a bead to put on the drawstring, but it kept falling off and ds said he didn't want it on. If you make them successfully will you put them in plastic bags and sell them to me please?

OP posts:
fillyjonk · 25/08/2007 10:10

oh my jesus feckin god

are you channelling martha steward here?

I want a WHAT? A "long reach hole punch"? I can see you are no amateur here.

ok

look they only have stars and crap

and they are £9.99!

but I would feel virtuous...and I could do tractors and giraffes and guinea pigs and all the things ds likes...And I could put them in a polythene bag and send them to myself...

now must go and teach fillyboy to ride a bike...

fillyjonk · 25/08/2007 10:12

ok have bought off ebay, baker ross was influencing me badly anyway. I send my kid to a steiner kindergarten mainly so I won't have to treasure things made from foam shapes

now off to buy 100% wool felt...

FrannyandZooey · 25/08/2007 17:47

LOL the foam shapes are the devil's work, aren't they?

I am extremely au fait with the contents of the Baker Ross catalogue, but I am a mere Browser. I wouldn't want you to think I was a Crafter or anything like that.

I thought £10 for 3 peculiar hole punches was quite good, actually. Ds would LOVE them.

princessmel · 25/08/2007 18:17

Just got a fish pouch for ds.

fillyjonk · 25/08/2007 19:34

oh god, it probably IS good value

I don't DO cards, I don't DO foam, and I am not a baker ross oogler. So.

And there is something very rude about the term "fish pouch" . I am sorry to bring it up but there IS.

FrannyandZooey · 25/08/2007 21:14

at fish pouch

I am not a card person but I know ds would play with those hole punchers for about a week

that to me is good value
