Easy guide to crochet?

Can anyone recommend an easy guide to crochet for my 9 year old DD? She is really crafting, picked up knitting easily and is always busy making something. She has dyslexia so written instructions are no good. Can anyone recommend a very visual book for beginners or is she better off with a you tube tutorial? Any recommendations very welcome. I have been looking for a kids class but nothing available.

That's the best thing about crochet...make a mistake? No dramas! Just unravel and have another go!

I have a bag of failed attempts! Can’t work out what to do with them but I can’t chuck them. One tip, it’s okay to undo (‘frog’ and start again but tell her to be wary of doing it too many times. The wool starts to split and is difficult to work with.

I second the many failed attempts. DH will confirm that there was a lot of swearing (not suggesting your DD does this!). But once it clicks, you're away. And in fairness to your DD, I think she's mastered the stitches, it's just where to put them - it's pretty impressive for a first attempt!

Oh, meant to say that my learners recommendation would be Little Tin Bird - that's how I cracked it. She uses pictures, not videos - I found that slightly easier.

That’s a feat first square! My first square was a Trapezium...

Great. Not feat 🙄

Hi OP, Twinkie Chan has written a couple of great crochet books, and I'm sure the patterns would appeal to your daughter!

Kittensgalore · 23/09/2018 10:22

Thanks for the lovely messages, I will show her them. I had got a couple of books as well and she was getting frustrated as she couldn't read the instructions even though I thought the pictures were quite clear so You Tube is definitely the way to go for her. She has been busy making mini granny squares and fairy hats!

Sorry meant also to ask if anyone has any suggestions as to what would be easy to progress to from granny squares? She loves animals and have seen lots of cute crochet animals but maybe too complicated just now.

If she wants to make animals this is a lovely hallowe'en project I've made recently:

These little pumpkins are cute as well and good practice for amigurumi style stitches:

My very first project was a phone case:

These little robins were some of the first things I made:

Also these socks!

As said look up big foot bunny... YouTube is very informative...
As to her square she is working the wro. G holes...
Make the center and mark the four corners at the finish of each row, so she knows where too work the doubles...
It won't take her long too see where they are...
Also tell her too use two colours to start with and alternate the rows... Xxc

So many great patterns on Ravelry, many of them free. And you get to see how other people made them, and how they found the pattern. Maybe try a scarf next? No fiddly sewing.

Kittensgalore · 26/09/2018 13:57

Great ideas, thanks so much, she will love the bats, pumpkins and robins. She is also desperate for a phone for Xmas so the cover will appeal. Will look at big foot bunny too. Really obvious question but how would you mark the centre and corners of the granny square? Thanks again everyone. I am really hoping she sticks with it as there are so many cute things she could make meGrin

You can buy stitch markers, but just as easy and cheaper to use safety pins.

I love Girlybunches on YouTube as well as Bella Coco, GB taught me more but I find BC explains every stitch she uses in all of her videos so even beginners can follow
