Easy guide to crochet?

Kittensgalore · 18/09/2018 09:25

Can anyone recommend an easy guide to crochet for my 9 year old DD? She is really crafting, picked up knitting easily and is always busy making something. She has dyslexia so written instructions are no good. Can anyone recommend a very visual book for beginners or is she better off with a you tube tutorial? Any recommendations very welcome. I have been looking for a kids class but nothing available.

I learned to crochet by watching Bella Coco YouTube tutorials. She's very easy to listen to and to follow, and she demonstrates everything from the most basic stitches to complex ones.

Great thanks for thanks the recommendation, I thought something on You Tube would probably be the way to go for her. Do I need to get a whole set of crochet hooks?

Just had a look at a Bella coco beginners tutorial and I'm hooked ( excuse the dreadful pun!). Have ordered some DK wool and a 5mm hook and may even give it a go myself!

Glad you liked it! I became a crochet addict after watching Bella Coco too. No you definitely don't need loads of hooks etc, most double knit uses a 4mm, 4.5mm or 5mm hook, whichever you prefer. Myself I like a 4mm , it gives a nice finish. You van buy reasonably priced wool in Mr Price so year round, and aldi do yarn special offers now and then, in fact it's running at the moment if you wanted to buy a couple of balls cheaply.

Bella Coco is good but as an absolute beginner I found her too fast! I love Jayda Institches.

I’m a visual learner. I learnt to crochet on YouTube as well. I love it and once you learn the basics there’s are loads of tutorials on there

girlinleeds · 18/09/2018 15:58

Aldi also have sets of crochet hooks at the moment, I taught myself to crochet by watching YouTube x

Brilliant thanks so much for all the advice. I did carry on watching the Bella coco tutorial for a granny square and have to say it seemed awfully complicated but then DD picks things up much more quickly than I ever would. She is definitely a very visual learner. Will check out the other you tube suggestion as well. I really hope she gets into it as I keep seeing really cute crotchet things that I know she would love. Will also pay a visit to Aldi ASAP!

Drops make a good affordable set of crochet hooks in a case, good for christmas! Personally I love the knitpro wooden hooks.

Don’t start amigurumi or you’ll never stop 😂

Amazon often have reasonably cheap soft touch hooks, like this. I find the rubber grip ones easier to use and less tiring. The advantage of buying a set rather than just one or two is that she can adjust the size of the hook according to how she crochets. If she's a loose crocheter then she can go down a size or up a size if she's a tight crocheter and that way get the tension right.

Utube big foot bunny...
Easy to make and she explains well.

Ebay 9 silicon hooks for £4

ShovingLeopard · 18/09/2018 17:33

I saw some lovely cheap crochet hooks in Tiger. Only £1 each, and they have soft, ergonomic grip handles.

dontticklethetoad · 18/09/2018 17:33

Aldi have packs of crochet hooks at the moment.

Synecdoche · 18/09/2018 17:36

I learnt to crochet on YouTube- just watch the differences in stitch names between UK and US crocheters. She'll be okay to start with a 4.5mm hook and a ball of DK yarn.

fishfingersandketchup · 18/09/2018 17:39

Attic24 has loads of fantastic patterns with step by step photos showing each stage really clearly. Would recommend once she's learnt the basic stitches. I love crochet, I taught myself a year ago and really enjoy it.

Poppy1968 · 18/09/2018 17:44

I learnt to Crochet watching Jada in stitches on you tube too, I found her really easy to follow, I crochet all the time now.

I can't bear Jayda in Stitches! Her voice and her bouncing around really irritate me Grin. I was a complete novice when I started watching Bella Coco online, I had never even held a crochet hook before that. It's a very relaxing yet focused hobby and it's easy to pick and put down whenever you have a few mins.

Kittensgalore · 19/09/2018 23:54

Thanks so much for all the suggestions. Definitely need a trip to Aldi and Tiger!
I had ordered a set of yarn from Amazon that turned up today and DD started with the woman on the bouncing ball but she didn't get along with her so we moved to Bella coco who she much preferred! After some trial and error she has made what I think is an amazing first start on a granny square. She was not so happy as she said it does not look square. We agreed I would post a picture here to show you all her first attempt!

That's a great start!

TyrionLannistersShadow · 20/09/2018 13:54

That's a great start, honestly it's all just practice and trial and error, nothing more! You should have seem my first few attempts Grin but now I'm fairly competent and really enjoy it. Tell her to just keep trying, watch the videos and have fun .

Kittensgalore · 20/09/2018 21:20

Thank you guys, this board is like an antithesis to AIBU, not that I have ever been there with any kind of purpose but have wondered in by accident occasionally.

Sadly DD unravelled the first granny square as she felt it wasn't quite right but I think she has the crochet bug. And for a wee girl who struggles to keep up with her peers in so many ways I think she has done brilliantly! Thanks so much for all your help- v much appreciated.

It looks like a great start! The next one will be even better!

Nobody's granny squares look perfectly square when they are first made. You need to google 'blocking crochet'.

fishfingersandketchup · 21/09/2018 18:35

Tell your DD that this 43 year old had many many failed attempts at crochet before I cracked it. I was determined to get it but it really didn't come easily! I now love it as a hobby and wish I had started earlierSmile
