Border for solid granny square blanket

OnTopOfSpaghetti · 30/03/2018 23:19

Can anyone help me find a simple border to add to my solid granny square blanket? I am currently joining all the squares and have searched the internet in vain for a simple pattern to follow once I'm ready to add the border, but can't find anything suitable. I'll pop back tomorrow and add some pics of my progress so far.
Thanks in advance.

Totally agree with Hardasnails suggestion

TheHumanMothboy · 02/04/2018 17:55

I don't have any advice, but just wanted to say what lovely colours! It looks great.

OnTopOfSpaghetti · 02/04/2018 19:07

Oh more replies I've only just noticed! I'm going to follow hardasnails advice for the border.
Too late to block each square now but I will wash it when it's done and try and stretch into shape. It's not going to be perfect but made with love and I hope my mum likes it!
4 more rows to join then all the vertical joins to do. It's certainly a labour of love! Think I need to learn join as you go!

Wow op it looks fab 😍! I love the colours together. I am sure your mum will see how much love is in it!

Thank you @SallyDog Smile

It does look lovely. A very simple border is all it needs, and you'll be amazed what a difference it makes once you start edging it, it'll look really tidy.

OnTopOfSpaghetti · 03/04/2018 22:32

Thank you @HardAsSnails.Would you just stick to cream for the border then? Or once I've done the first round of cream shall I pick out a colour to finish it off? My mum would probably love the pomegranate or magenta, I know its a bit OTT but that's her style! By the way I am planning to follow your instructions word for word

I would probably just do a cream border as the blanket is so striking I don't think it needs a colourful border. But do what you think your mum would like best.

OnTopOfSpaghetti · 04/04/2018 12:03

Thank you @HardAsSnails Smile
I think I will stick with the cream and see how it looks. You're right it is extremely bright and colourful and probably needs a plain border to frame it.

Any update photos op Smile?

OnTopOfSpaghetti · 11/04/2018 17:32

Well I have had a bit of a nightmare...
Did all the horizontal joins, started to do the verticals and it just wasn't sitting right. Too tight and bunched up
Nothing for it but to unpick it all (why oh why did I darn in my ends so well). I have now blocked every single damned square, and am re joining with a bigger hook size and looser tension.
I think it will work out OK but I have to have it done by next Sunday.....and its DSs birthday this weekend, Dh is away, erm...maybe I'll do it?!
Maybe it wasn't the best project for a beginner with a short timescale....
I'll let you know either way @SallyDog and thank you for your kind interest!

I wish I was there and I could explain to you how I join up my squares..it's really easy and aligns them nicely without blocking..I don't know how to explain though.

llangennith · 11/04/2018 17:40

ItsASair maybe if you posted a photo close up the OP could work out the stitch for herself?

OnTopOfSpaghetti · 11/04/2018 19:51

Thank you, I am using the Attic 24 method of joining and they all seem to line up, its just I had it too tight I think. I appreciate the kind thought! I feel more confident this time. Although I may never make another granny square blanket ever again!

Well if anyone's still remotely interested I got it finished just in time! The border is just two lots of double crochet, I decided simple was best in the end. Its a bit wobbly and definitely the work of a beginner, but made with love (and some sweat and tearsGrin)
Just trying to decide if I dare put it on a gentle wash, I think it needs it but I'm scared!
Thanks for all the advice along the way.

Stunning. You must be very proud of yourself - I get a kick from seeing my finished projects and that one is wonderful.

Floopbloop · 19/04/2018 17:26

It's beautiful! Would you mind posting a list of the colours you've used, I'm a lover of Stylecraft Special DK and I can identify most of them but not all. I think you've done a great job and I'm sure your mum will love it!

OnTopOfSpaghetti · 19/04/2018 19:13

Ah thank you for the kind comments
@Floopbloop the colours are pomegranate, shrimp, apricot, saffron, citron, spring green, aspen, turquoise, sherbert, lavendar, wisteria, fondant, magenta.

OnTopOfSpaghetti · 19/04/2018 19:32

Thank youSmile
I feel a little bereft this evening, I have spent every spare hour on that blanket! Time to dream up the next project (think I'm a little bit addicted Wink)

You did a fabulous job, well done! xx Can recommend the Attic 24 Granny Stripe as a lovely blanket to work up..and some beautiful colour combinations on Pinterest.

OnTopOfSpaghetti · 19/04/2018 22:10

Funny you should mention that @ItsASairFecht , DS mentioned he'd like a chunky monochrome version of a granny stripe for his room! (I wouldn't have thought a crochet blanket would appeal to a hulking big 14 yr old but he seems genuinely keen!)
I'll take a look. Oh, and order some chunky yarn.... hmm I think I need a crochet room to store my stuff!Grin

@ontopofspaghetti I suggest joining Ravelry if you haven't already, loads of amazing patterns to look through and you can look at other people's projects to get inspiration and ideas on colours/yarns etc.
