Sexists. How much a metre do you pay for your sewing fabric? What’s too cheap/too expensive?

Hellooooo, just the above, really. I’ve been paying around £10 a meter, give or take a quid or 2, for cotton fabric. Is that expensive, or ok?
What are your thoughts?

I'm not a sexist but for basic cottons I would aim to pay less than £10 per metre

I'm a complete cheapskate, and aim to pay around £6 a metre for cottons and jerseys, more for speciality stuff. I dream of having the confidence to cut into £30 wool tweed...

Haha! That was what caught my attention. It depends on the quality really. It's at the higher end but for a good quality cotton from a bricks and mortar store it's probably about standard. You can find nice stuff for less though - I've had some good stuff from market stalls for £3-5 per metre. Or if you don't mind buying online, somewhere like Fabricland is good for cheaper novelty prints (not always the best quality though) or you could have a look at Fabworks.

Crafting, basically for make up bags, handbags purses/wallets iPad /phone covers, that sort of thing.

Dressmaking will hopefully come along when I can gain more confidence with my sewing. I’m not a sexist either

Fabric Guild do some good offers on quilting type cottons.

You can pay what you like for fabric. £10 a meter sound OK to me. It's important that you use something you really like.

Depends what it's for, I got poly cotton from eBay for about £3 a meter that wasn't bad for covering DS's headboard.

It's more like £6-10 for dressmaking usually though.

Sorry, I should clarify, that's more usual for me, not generally. I know it can go up to £££ for designer fabrics.

If it's crafting cottons, Doughty's online have a huge selection at different price points, and I've had excellent service from them

I haven’t got the money to keep buying at that price, though I have bought things when on offer, extra width etc.
I normally buy online.
Most of the time I’ve got what I’ve paid for, only once or twice I’ve received thin cheap cotton.

I bought some lovely Riley Blake material that was £10 for the meter, but that’s designer, so didn’t think that was too bad?
Will also look at the polycotton from Ebay Flavia

For crafting I often buy things from charity shops to recycle. Or upcycle/re-purpose I guess.

I would say between £8-10 pm for cotton fabric, but I can get fairly decent polycotton for £3 - £4 pm, both at my local fabric shop. Markets and Indian fabric shops often have some bargains.

Sewing is very sexist. Hardly any good 'man' fabrics and all the sewing magazines are mainly women's items.
