Wanted - knitted square patterns

I've decided to use up my huge stash of wool as I have so little room in my house! So would like to make a knitted blanket.

Any suggestions for some nice designs? I will probably stick to stocking stitch because of the variety of colours - but am on the lookout for interesting designs.

Also, much of knitting is for dcs who would marmalise fine designer yarn in a trice, plus whinge about it being fluffy...so, it has to be smooth and readily washable.

Ceolas, book arrived today

(OK in the scheme of things it didn't have that far to come, but even so ... !!!!

It is lovely! I have picked out a few designs that I am going to use.

daleks, you are right about the limited colour range in the oddball one - I don't think mine will have the same ... er ... cohesiveness!! However I was thinking I might (at some point) buy a batch of one colour to make the border so that it is well framed.

I am currently just finishing this square (first time at doing that kind of square, unfortunately mine isn't quite as neat!). I made this one first.

Marina, at you printing them out at work!!! I was so tempted to print them all out, but since my laptop sits on the little side table next to my knitting bag, I felt I should just work off the computer and save a tree or too !

Our post is bizarre, ceolas. I have known first class to take over a week . First or second seems to have no impact here (particularly when it gets routed via Mull - er, logical - NOT)!!

Dd1 has named the blanket "mishmosh" and has already claimed it for her bed!!

OK - question. I am now doing this square - can anyone tell me what "duplicate stitch" is please? Is that like swiss darning?

Update - I have now done this one and just finishing this one this last week, plus a self-patterned one from ceolas's book. I am now going to attempt cabling for the first time! That last square I linked to was my first attempt at making bobbles and though they aren't brilliant I am quite pleased with my first effort

There are lots of fab self-patterned squares in that book Ceolas! I got quite a lot of almost complete balls of wool so I shall be using a lot of designs from your book to use those up.

Not counted up but I think I've done about 6 or 7 squares now (only another 40 or so to do )

Update on the blanket - lost count of how many squares I have done now!! Am currently doing this one which looks very good.

Can anyone point me in the direction of any more intarsia designs, preferably that will fit into a 47 st x 63 rows square? I've picked up a few from a lovely knitting book I got from the library but had to give it back as it was embarrassingly overdue ! Have got Ceolas's lovely book which has lots of ideas in but would like some more "picture" squares too
