Wanted - knitted square patterns

Miaou · 09/04/2007 18:10

I've decided to use up my huge stash of wool as I have so little room in my house! So would like to make a knitted blanket.

Any suggestions for some nice designs? I will probably stick to stocking stitch because of the variety of colours - but am on the lookout for interesting designs.

Thank you!

Hi Miaou! The stocking stitch doesn't lie flat so well so you might be better with the flatter stitches eg garter, rib, moss etc. Are you looking for different designs for different squares, or an overall design based on colours iyswim?

RustyBear · 09/04/2007 18:16

My mum used to make knitted blankets for charity - she did several with the tradtional squares, but the last few she made were elongated hexagons - sort of this shape iyswim. I think she used to crochet then together in a neutral colour, usually pale grey, so the borders were about 25mm wide.
I still have a bag of the last lot of hexagons she made in my loft - waiting for someone with the energy & skill to fix them together.

RustyBear · 09/04/2007 18:17

btw i think they were moss stitch but not sure.

Thanks for your comments!

Daleks, I was thinking of st st because it's good for intarsia so I could do a few simple pictures to break up the colours etc. Also thought that once I had sewn it up it would lie flatter - ? I could do like we do for the mumsnet blanket and sew moss stith borders I suppose (though that does my head in!! ). I've got loads of neutral wool too so could crochet borders to the squares.

In answer to your other question - different designs for different squares I think - such a mishmosh of colours that I think each square as a stand alone will probably work better.

Rustybear - thanks for the idea - I think I'll stick to squares for now though as it might be easier to control the size!!

Miaou I love this one

Idreamofdaleks · 09/04/2007 19:44

Also this

ceolas · 09/04/2007 19:46

Miaou, I have a lovely book you can borrow if you want. Email me your address if you'd like me to send it to you.

Idreamofdaleks · 09/04/2007 19:48

this is fab

ceolas · 09/04/2007 19:52

this is the book

Marina · 09/04/2007 19:53

Ahem, as a sewer-up with all too much experience of beating squares into submission, can I suggest Miaou that if you are going to do stocking stitch that you do your moss stitch border round the edge of these squares
But that last link from Idreamofdaleks is deffo brill, as RTKM would say. What a fantastic pattern.
I can send you a lend of a Debbie Abrahams book if you like, just mail me

Marina · 09/04/2007 19:53

Ha, fab x-post with Ceolas, it is the same book. And pretty good it is too!

Idreamofdaleks · 09/04/2007 19:55

I want to do one too now

ceolas · 09/04/2007 19:56

I keep meaning to start a baby blanket. Am fantasising about a complicated Rowan apple tree pattern but thinking I'll get bored half way through.

Marina · 09/04/2007 20:02

I've seen that blanket and it looks very sweet but bland, a bit like a large dish of vanilla ice-cream. I'd definitely get bored, but then I'm more of a shouty afghan type of person, like the jollier patterns in Abrahams or that astounding sampler afghan on Idream's third link

ceolas · 09/04/2007 20:03

I know, but all the sewing up...

ceolas · 09/04/2007 20:07

apple tree

I also thought about doing a copy of this one

I suppose squares are quick to do when you have a spare moment. But the sewing...

Marina · 09/04/2007 20:11

Ceolas if you fancy that sort of stripy blanket, there is a dead ringer for it in the Sublime 600 Book for Babies. It is very pretty and I bet Mamas and Papas stole the idea from the pattern book!

ceolas · 09/04/2007 20:17

Is this the one Marina?

I reckon it would be easy enough to do without a pattern?

Have a look at some of these . I think they might be up your street! I love the log cabin design.

SueW · 09/04/2007 20:20

Marina, have you seen the mammoth tasking that is sewing together the river ?

Cable squares

Marina · 09/04/2007 20:58

whenever I start to get into a sweaty panic about the Pink Monster SueW I console myself with the fact that my sole interaction with The River has been to lob a square at my colleague, who has been doing this with her knitting group.
I reckon you could busk that blanket easily Ceolas, but if you want the pattern, let me know. I have the book and am currently doing the matinee jacket for my dsis (well for her baby, she is slender but not that slender).
I think I just fell in love with Flickr thanks for those links!

Miaou · 09/04/2007 21:35

ooooh oooh oooh

you lovely lot! Some great patterns to look at

I am in lurve with the oddball afghan blanket (your third link, dalek) - that is fab! I will deffo take some ideas from there.

Ceolas, I would love to borrow your book - I still have your email address so will drop you a line!! Marina, thank you for your offer too - LOL at you both offering me the book you lovelies

(all excited now)

Miaou

I think the oddball one has a limited colour range which helps it work, so it isn't entirely oddball imo

please update us with your decisions/ progress!

ceolas · 10/04/2007 19:51

Miaou, book is on its way

Marina · 10/04/2007 20:37

I am soooo going to print out that lovely collection of squares from the Oddball Afghan (tomorrow, at work )
