Lidl: Knitting stuff next Thursday (March 15th)

Had a glance at the flyer at a friend's place, next week they have packs of wool, all under £1/ball, some acrylic, some cotton, some eyelash maybe, some varieaged.

Oh, and some crochet stuff, and some sewing stuff, and even some card-making stuff I think.

Ours had LOTS of plain cotton yarn in single colours.

I might get her a few of those, too, so she can knit herself a light cardi for summer.

Marina · 15/03/2007 16:06

cremolafoam, you can use the lidl website filly linked to, to check which local ones stock the wool. Assuming the website is accurate of course

RubberDuck · 15/03/2007 16:10

Did anyone buy the sewing machine? Is it any good?

exbury · 15/03/2007 16:31

Ours had loads of white in both knitting wool and crochet cotton (well, cotton mix)

Not being a knitter I got cheap velcro and an easter craft kit for DS, and managed to get out without being tempted by any strange eastern european foodstuffs (I was late )

..no crowds of frenzied knitters (well a few but they seemed to be buying baby blue ) so if anyone still wants some - it's the one in Stourport!

expatinscotland · 15/03/2007 16:35

I think I'll get her some of the single colour stuff, too. Just trying to think what colour she might like . . .

NotQuiteCockney · 15/03/2007 21:19

Ours had:

  • multicoloured cotton
  • eyelash (synthetic)
  • synthetic with shiny stuff
  • plain synthetic
  • plain cotton, but quite thin, less than 4ply I think.

I got just some multicoloured cotton. Oh, and craft stuff for the co-op - the spring crafts box at £3 is quite good, imo.

expatinscotland · 16/03/2007 09:12

I hope MIL likes the multi-coloured cotton!

trillium · 18/03/2007 10:18

Thanks for the alert.

I'm now the proud and delighted owner of a sewing machine that actually works (well, hopefully........haven't tried it yet but it looks just the job. I just have to figure out how to work it )

So looking forward to using it. I've got a bin bag full of dd's old dresses etc that I'm planning to turn into a quilt.

I'm a sucker for sewing machines.I've got three old Singers that need attention: a treadle one that I have many happy memories of playing "trains" on when I was little, and two that I rescued from a rubbish tip, one that needs a new foot pressy downy thingy (gaaahh, what's it called, my mind's gone blank), and one that you turn a handwheel on the side (which only leaves you one hand free ).

NotQuiteCockney · 18/03/2007 10:32

Ok, I've got to ask - trillium, are you from Ontario? You can't be, can you? Hauling a collection of sewing machines from country to country?

trillium · 18/03/2007 11:00

No NQC. Should I be? [confused emoticon]

Cloudhopper · 18/03/2007 11:12

Just found this and am off to Lidl right away to see if there is anything left.

i got 12 balls of the mercerised cotton for crochet. i 'think' that will be enough for the next 20 yrs.

also got 6 balls of cotton for knitting.

about the cotton, i was intending to make loads of little crochet flowers to attach to other garments. maybe even sell some off for charity.

my school has a link with a school in sierra leone and we are raising money to rebuild their library. the school was gutted in the civil war.

Cloudhopper · 18/03/2007 13:26

Well, there wasn't much left but I picked up a pair of cheap needles for 99p, a sewing kit and a couple of packs of small gauge red mercerised cotton. I noticed some great looking crochet cotton, but am not really into crochet, so that would probably sit in the cupboard for the next 5 years.

Thanks for the tip off.

NotQuiteCockney · 18/03/2007 17:40

Oh, the trillium is the provincial flower of Ontario. I just thought I'd spotted another Canuck with a regional sort of name. Sorry for the confusion!

Marina · 18/03/2007 19:49

I got an armful of the multi-coloured cotton in various spring-green shades, really pretty. The acrylic stuff was a bit bright looking...and I don't crochet so left it at that.
I am no longer a Lidl virgin! I'm not sure I'll be rushing back to the Catford one though, it was a bit weird in there...

NotQuiteCockney · 18/03/2007 19:50

Oh, they're all weird, don't fear!

My cotton stuff is bluey/greeney, very nice. Not sure what I'll do with it.

I'm sure you could knit with the crochet stuff, but it looked quite fine, even to me (who is used to 4ply).

Marina · 18/03/2007 22:12

All the lights were off! It was pretty murky. I got the same as you I think NQC - ds fancies a jumper made from it.

NotQuiteCockney · 19/03/2007 05:54

All the lights being off sounds weird.

Let me know how it knits up, if you start using it before me. I'm a bit confused by the 3.0-4.0mm thing - aren't these things normally a bit more precise than that?

Marina · 19/03/2007 10:11

Me too. It looks about the same gauge as Jaeger Aqua cotton (so a bit on the thin side for "true" dk) so I will probably give 3.75 a try. It looks far too thick for 3.25 IMO, and too thin for 4.

bundle · 20/03/2007 13:08

lol @ lights being off

security guard in ours refused to sell drunken woman alcohol, so gets top marks in my book

I too (spookily) bought the bluey greeny dk cotton, but I think I have 2 diff batches so prob will go for tank tops

Not yet (am bogged down in PINK SQUARES) but I notice it is 30 degrees wash so I bet it will shrink like the old harry
LOL at the security guard bundy. The one in Catford followed me around with interest - I think somehow my bafflement was obvious even in the Stygian gloom
