How do so get started in crochet?

Exactly as it says. Can anyone point me in the direction of a reasonable tutorial for a (moderately) intelligent woman? How much kit will I need?

My big plan is to crochet a tea cosy. How many decades of practise will I need to achieve such a dream...?

I taught myself from the internet. Not YouTube, l found l couldn't keep up with a video, so l just googled it. I taught myself in about a day, and can crochet anything now.

I was a very experienced knitter prior to crochet, and that did help a lot.

i taught myself last year watching the crochet crowd on you tube. you dont need much to get started, a ball of dk yarn/wool and a 4mm hook. i make allsorts of things now, its easy and addictive once you get the hang of it

I taught myself a few years ago, watch plenty of you tube tutorials and just keep pausing and rewinding. It may help to have something in mind that you would like to make such as a blanket, and then google beginner crochet blanket.

Seconding the Crochet Crowd on YouTube. Another good one is Bella Coco. Her videos are excellent....I just pause where needed,

I only started crocheting at the beginning of the summer and am really enjoying it. You could start off by doing some squares for one of the Woolly Hugs projects, I found that a good was to learn and try out new stitches and techniques.

I used to teach crochet workshops and had very many absolute beginners. By the end of the first 2 hour session the majority were competently crocheting basic stitches. To be honest once you learn the top 3 most used stitches you can do almost any pattern.

I think a lot of patterns are written in a way that makes it look like a mathematical equation and it can seem daunting. But if you follow a step by step tutorial, you can achieve so much more in a shorter space of time.

I also recommend following the recommendations regarding wool type and crochet hook size. getting your head around yarn types as a beginner can feel confusing and the results are better when the right wool is used.

I taught myself via You Tube and a book, but i was also a knitter. Now i never knit and always crochet as it is so much easier.

I am happy to give you a few pointers if you get stuck.

You lot are fantastic. Thank you. Right, off to find out whether I may have inherited any of these things in my late Grandmother's sewing box (usually only used for sewing buttons!).

I knit and sew, but never got the hang of crochet. I'd love to, though.

I used the Plant Purl videos on YouTube. Bear in mind that UK & US patterns use different names for the same stitch

Well done! An amazing start. I taught myself to crochet and I have found that by practicing little and often you will quickly become competent. One word of warning though, buying yarn is addictive!!! So is crocheting, come to think of it. The kids have learnt to wait because "I'm counting" and my husband complains he's a crochet widow .

That looks amazing - what a great start. if one of my students came up with that I would be chuffed to bits. usually we would start with a flower because it is a satisfying project to finish in an hour or two.Keep going!

I take a lot of buses and do a lot of painful hanging around for dc-related things. If I could have some crochet on the go I'd be made up!
