hi,
does anyone know of a good wool shop in london? i need a shop that sells lots of different colours of the same type of wool, not a shop that sells lots of different types of wool in very few colours iyswim. i've tried john lewis, liberty, peter jones and am just fed up! i want to crochet a blanket with seven different colours, so i need to find somewhere with LOTS of different colours. it's impossible to find more than 3 colours that match ime...

Maybe try Loop in Islington. Think it's just off Upper Street on (?) Cross Street. The definitely have a website....

tamum · 08/07/2006 18:55

There's a new place in Putney that's meant to be fantastic too; otherwise Loop as Earlybird says. Hang on I'll try and find the Putney one...

tamum · 08/07/2006 18:56

Stash Yarns, that's the name. There are some drooly pictures here ....

warthog · 08/07/2006 19:24

That looks nicer than Loop. (I don't think Loop has as wide a range as you're looking for.)

Oh, and lots of online shops have good selections, but it's not the same as properly seeing it.

warthog · 08/07/2006 20:15

yeah nqc. especially when colours change according to what they're put with. i decided long ago not to buy online unless i had a sample, and sample cards are a right pita to keep up to date with. used to do it with beading. could also check sample cards in shop and order online...

but there's nothing like being able to choose everything there and then in the shop and scuttling home drooling.

This is what a wool shop looks like. I will be there next month (!! not ready to go on holiday yet, shit!).

Must be Yonge Street, NQC?

NotQuiteCockney · 09/07/2006 06:50

No, Queen West. It's called Romni Wools. And it really is that big/full/messy. Well, there's another floor, too.

I'm afraid Romni Wools has put me off every single English yarn store I've been in.

(Although I am curious about Purl Soho - DH went there to buy stuff for me, they were lovely on the phone, had great books, and he met Uma Thurman in the queue.)

warthog · 11/07/2006 14:10

went to stash yarns today and the wool is amazing! lots of really lovely stuff, BUT i need cheapo yarn (acrylic will do) and a big choice in colours. anyone know anywhere like that? even if it's an online shop - desperate now!

i did get a lovely ball of wool in blues and greens - absolutely stunning!

wart, take a look on ebay. Sometimes, people destash and you can pick up some good bargains. You don't want much of each colour, so your chances are high of getting what you want.

phillip · 11/07/2006 15:28

warty where do you live?

Marina · 11/07/2006 15:33

warty for cheap yarns in lots of colours and really kind service try Texere Yarns (google them, have lost my linkies for now).
I blame Tamum for putting me onto them
They do spools of cotton dk in an array of pretty colours.
With the demise of the granny shop and the rise of knitting boudoirs like Loop (one ball of wool on a cushion in the window FFS) I think cheapo acrylic is much harder to find these days than hand carded llama shavings at £25 a ball frankly

phillip · 11/07/2006 15:35

oh sorry keep forgetting I'm philip now (bundle here ) - we have HEAPS OF ACRYLIC in North London...plus Christian icons (some knitted) in Lenarow, N4

phillip · 11/07/2006 15:35

marina, still haven't done the texere thing, is the strokey sampley thing available now? x

Marina · 11/07/2006 15:38

Yes, I have had to wrest it from dd's destructive little mitts more than once Phillip. It is fat and full of lovely samples. Highly recommended

Marina · 11/07/2006 15:39

Talking of knitted Christian artefacts we had an absolutely blinding knitted Last Supper (complete with grumpy Judas) at church for Easter this year bundy

phillip · 11/07/2006 15:46

lol @ grumpy Judas

Marina · 11/07/2006 15:50

He had a scowly expression in back-stitch, and rough, hairy robes in grey. Jesus and everyone else resplendent in warm tones moss stitch...

tamum · 11/07/2006 17:24

That sounds marvellous, Marina

I have been invited to a sale preview by our fabulous local shop, hurrah!

warthog · 11/07/2006 23:11

thanks marina and tiktok, will google / ebay them. didn't think of ebay but is definitely worth looking.

lmao at llama shavings... it's true though! what every happened to good old simple wool?? why does it have to be infused with chamomile and gold flakes gathered from the base of the himalayas? although i must admit it's nice to have the option

phillip, do you know of a good shop? n4 isn't too far for me to go...
what's the strokey sample thing? a sample card?

thanks all!
