DIY pouffe/small footstool?

Hi all, I'm after a low-ish pouffe for our nursery and wondering whether I could fashion one myself...

Has anyone seen/done anything similar? I don't have an old one to reupholster, but I do have a carpenter husband who could knock me something up if needed. I'm just looking now at a smallish wooden storage box I have with a hinged lid - I could basically upholster (staple-gun) a padded cushioned bit on to the top, and get him to add castors, maybe?

Or maybe use something as a base to create a more squishy all-over-upholstered one? My MIL reupholstered an old one with a kelim rug, which came out well - has anyone tried making something similar from scratch?

Hi I made a pouffe a few months ago, made a stencil from some instructions online, think i needed 8 segments and 2 "rounds"for top & bottom. I used an old curtain and stuffed it with an old blanket(for weight) and part of a duvet(nice and squidgy), it was fairly easy to do and my kids love it.

Thanks halfway!

I think I'm going to attempt something similar to this but maybe square, as the fabric I want to use is checked, and I think it'll just look better as a square.

I've got some cushion filling and an old pillow, and can probably dredge up an old blanket from somewhere - I think that would work nicely - thanks for the idea!

I made a couple of poufs using an Amy Butler pattern and filled them with bean bag beans, very easy to make. www.raystitch.co.uk/amy-butler-gum-drop-pillows.html

Ta very much Patchwork

I'm in the middle of making http://www.livingwithpunks.com/2010/05/tutorial-land-of-nod-inspired-floor.html this one as we speak, but have just broken the sewing machine needle and will have to wait til tomorrow at the earliest to buy another one! I think I was a little over-enthusiastic when I got going.

Those Amy Butler ones remind me that I thinkI have some sort of pattern in a Cath Kidston somewhere - will have a look.

Nice pattern and square idea sounds great, good luck finding the needle.

looks great, I hate it when a needle breaks and its too late to go out and buy more! Kind of throws me off, have to sew when I'm in the 'zone'

Finished! There's a picture on my profile if anyone wants to see the results.

In the end I went with the round version - it's not perfect but it does the job and for a first attempt I'm quite pleased with it. It was my first attempt at any kind of piping, which wasn't as hard as I thought. I increased the overall depth by an inch or two, and also had to add a patch to the long side part as it somehow ended up too short once I'd pinned the top circle to it. I also broke two needles and reminded myself why I avoid zips (there wasn't one in the tutorial but I thought it would sensible to add one, to make it easy to remove stuffing and wash. It might have been sensible but it wasn't pretty!).

That was quick, I cant work out how to look at pics.
I haven't been brave enough to try piping yet and the zip's a good idea.
