Wool/yarn addiction

I haven't been knitting long but I LOVe knitting flowers and crafty bits.
I can't stop buying wool (£1-2 here and there) I spend around £20-30 per month.
My new found hobby is taking over!
Is anyone else a compulsive wool purchaser? No one warned me buying wool would become an obsession!

I always thought I was a professional, but apparently I'm just a simple novice! I have a huge square laundry carrier full! It's pretty naff though, it's all mainly synthetic and random balls I pick up in charity shops! I went through a stage when the kids were small of knitting toys, for which those yarns are perfect.
I need to have a good clear out of the dross and start scouting around for some good stuff! I love the cashmeres, merinos and alpacas. Anything that is gorgeously soft. I'm also a bit of a sucker for those yarns with sparkly bits or sequins in! I'm actually just posting on this thread in order to mark my place so I don't lose all of these lovely links!

Saggy you've just reminded me I started a cardie for Christmas with sparkly bits. I don't think I got very far. Probably buried under a pile of other yarns.

Maybe next Christmas unless something even more gorgeous comes along.

I had an hour long conversation the other day with DH about whether to organise my stash by colour or by weight but I'm not sure he was listening. I still haven't decided, any thoughts?

My real weakness is fyberspates, it's just all so soft and dreamy. And little hand dyers on etsy. And bargains on Celtic cove. And all the pretty knit picks colours. And the odd skein of Debbie bliss Andes. Maybe I need rehab.

AJB, I have a stash of DB Andes and I have no idea what I am going to do with it - I just love to tak it out and admire it occasionally.
One day I'm sure I'll think of a suitably lovely project

Vacuum bags! What a genius idea!

My yarn lives in a drawer under my bed. I have actually had to bin quite a lot of clothes in order to make space for it. If I use vacuum bags then I can buy more get the drawer closed.

I'm still shocked that I spent £80 on sirdar snuggly baby bamboo. I have lots of Stylecraft too. The problem is that I have no free time so projects progress very slowly.

I have four skeins of Debbie Bliss Andes - bought cheaply, because my local yarn shop is selling up the last of their stock as DB have stopped making it. I have two skeins of deep pink and two of dusty rose, and I am going to use all four to make a lace scarf for me.

I shall confess to being a bit of a hoarder, I seem to have had wool cravings when I was pregnant and built up a fairly substantial stash which I am slowly but surely reducing now. Thing is at the moment I can't take much pleasure from thinking about buying for a new project as I still have a bunch of yarn that I love and am desperate to get on with, but work and little boys take up my time!

I am looking forward to woolfest, last year was my first time and I went a little bit mental so having to give myself a strict budget this time...

One of my problems is I tend to buy online and go to great pains to buy enough to avoid delivery charges Plus I stocked up on DB Cashmerino because its not easy to get anymore and that wool makes me so happy.

I've just bought a sewing machine too so I'm got the beginnings of a fabric stash going on too. Poor DH, no idea how he puts up with me.

3 year old DD and I walked past a wool shop yesterday. Closing down sale with 30% off all yarns:

Me: (thinking aloud really) "It's a shame that shop is closed on Mondays."

DD: "Why is it a shame, mummy?"

Me: "It has a sale on wool."

DD: (deep sigh) Oh mummy, you are allowed to buy more wool when you've used up what you've already got! Okay, mummy?"

With regard to the yarn sale, I've seen. I may happen to just walk past again today (without DD) and might just happen to fall into the shop.

What will be most versatile for the small things I want to try? I'm practising different crochet flowers at the moment, but not liking the squeaky scratchy acrylic that I found so good for learning with. I've got plans for amigurami of various kinds, and also want to litter the house with different cushions by practising granny squares.

Do I need cotton yarn, or just some nicer DK acrylic?

I think you will find you need both Judy and possibly some nice non acrylic too

such a shame the shop is closing though I remember the days when most high streets had a wool/haberdashery shop

I find that cotton yarn splits too easily when I try to crochet with it, which is intensely frustrating. But there are some acrylic yarns that are both nice to work with, and nice to wear afterwards (if you make a garment out of them, that is). I like stylecraft special double knit, and have crocheted two mini-hugs for Yorkhill Hospital with it - and they felt soft when I had done them.

I'm about to try crocheting with James C Brett dk acrylic - it feels pleasant in the ball, and I am optimistic that it will be nice to work with.

I have just had the biggest yarn fix ever!! I won the yarn stash competition from Knit now magazine, and it has arrived!! I've put a picture on my profile - there are 66 balls of about 6 different King Cole yarns - and patterns and pattern books too. I am in yarn heaven!

Trouble is this redefines the standard for the yarn high, SDTG. Now the rest of us will be perpetually chasing this fix in the belief that we too can win an enormous stash of yarn and patterns! Addiction reaffirmed!

I know - I am so sorry. But I would say it is definitely worth entering the knit now competitions - I am the second person I know who has won! And sometimes the stashes are amazing!

I'm on my iPod so can't link the eBay stuff.
I've got 8 50g balls on their way and cost about £7.
Mostly cashmere/cotton blends, silk and bamboo and bamboo/cotton.
Amazing colours. Balls are quite small I do wonder if it is 50g per ball 😀

Wiseller or kool-DIY I'm sure you could search the shops,
Or put in bamboo modal wool or silk and bamboo yarn in search bar.
There's loads of stuff.
I got a ball for 64p and free p&p.

Closest I have come to that sort of high is buying somebody's craft room clear out from Ebay and having a huge bag of different yarns arrive. I did have to pay for it but it was v. cheap and v. exciting not knowing exactly what I was going to get!

It is worth searching on yarn clear out (or similar phrase) on eBay. You get some interesting stuff come up sometimes and it often goes quite cheaply, especially if it is being sold by somebody who doesn't know what it is worth.

I am really tempted to go and look at eBay now but I have a double quilt, wall hanging and a bag to make by the end of June and I don't have time to knit at the moment.

Isn't it just typical that I want to do the one thing I really don't have time for. On the bright side I am building a lovely stash in threads along side my yarn stash.
