Oh, only just watched it have been busy and am catching up on the thread now!

Ann was most definitely the best sewer, she wasn't the most innovative, but then creativity isn't what the show is about.

Handy hint, if you're making a toile, when you fit it do it with the seams outwards as it's easier to make adjustments.

I have a comedy bias binder maker that's about 10 cms when done. I WILL find something to use it on, for now it sits in the tool drawer and I laugh at it when I look at it Wink

It just so happens Tilly has a tutorial on how to make hams here I want a button hole spacer and a wooden pressing aide thingy that I can never remember the name of.

if anyone is interested, i have found a way to keep the episodes on my desktop after they go from iplayer. with a bit of research, it was quite easy using firefox and you tube.

Don't bother with any of the contestants - have a look at the Denman College (WI) and go on a May Martin course instead Grin why have cotton when you can have silk.....

I would apply but keeping fingers crossed this bean is a sticky one and my due date will be in December. Think I'll have to put my sewing machine out to pasture for a while then...

Oooooh would love a workshop like the Denman ones, how very civilised it would be. Might treat myself when baby is bigger. Mind you, did anyone else think that one of ms martin's dresses didn't look so well stitched?! Not that I know why I am being picky when my stitching is crapola...

Ann moderates on artisan square and there is a whole thread in chat on the sewing bee...interesting reading if you need a bee fix:)

I loved the final three, I think the time was too tight for Lauren. Think Sandra who I don't think ever studied couture techniques like Ann fitted the definition of a home(ly) sewer very well. I thought her final dress as so ambitious, more so than annes. But Ann is phenomenal, loved her and so hard to remember she is 81. Wow!

Cremey - you're forgiven - I didn't get a chance to sew again until my bean was about 14 months old (ie about 2 months ago) and i've gone absolutely bonkers! Grin

totally agree with tigga about the seams on the outside - but if you do that, please remember to allow about 1mm each seam for thickness of fabric! (thinks this is probably only relevant to the anal pattern cutters)

yy, please use Denman college - it's not as well used by WI as it should be, but it is open to the public for most courses.

you can't get better than a WI tutor! Grin

I am going on the Beginners Crochet weekend at Denman College in July. Silly excited about it. Possibly because I will have to drive past Bicester village to get there so may just have to do some outlet shopping on the way there
I did look at the sewing ones, but they were a bit too beginner for a semi-pro such as myself*

My trouser toile has confirmed that I am an extremely odd shape! I've had to change it so much I'm going to make another toile from my amended pattern to make sure.

The only problem now is that I've run out of calico. Next task to source some more!

So if I was going to buy one of those funky bias tape gadgets to edge stuff like Lauren did - what size would you recommend?

I've just looked and I've got a 12mm one, which needs almost 2.5cm (or 1") wide bias strips and a 24mm one, which takes 5cm (or 2") wide bias strips.

I've found both of mine useful for different jobs - the narrow one I've used lots for binding seams and the wider one for other edging and decorative stuff.

It sounds silly, but it depends what you'd use it for. What was the last commercial bias binding you bought?

I only tend to buy gadgets when I can see a need for them. It does mean that I've collected a large number of things over the years, but all the things I have bought have been used lots - the rouleau loop maker was a godsend making my SIL's wedding dress and my sister's bridesmaid's dresses for instance, just because of the sheer number I had to do; before that I'd always done the trick of feeding the thread through the centre of the loop. And again, the bias binding makers were great when I had to finish all the edges of two velveteen bridesmaid dresses.

Sorry I've waffled rather!
