Would a skinny crochet hook work?

OP posts:
UniqueAndAmazing · 24/04/2013 15:27

not long enough to pull on anything.
( i tried)

The straps I did before, i did them with a nappy pin! (i couldn't find a safety pin any smaller than that)

How about a chunky needle (like a knitting one or embroidery one?) - you could sew over one end of the rouleau and push it (blunt ends first) through, pulling the thread (and therefore rouleau end) with it?

Unique - you're more than experienced enough to try the piping cord method :)

Try it and experiment - it's very quick and easy once you get the hang of it.

Other than that - securely sew a length of very strong thread (VERY STRONG!!) to end of sewn bias slip the threaded needle inside the seam - (backwards -no point to get caught!) and once the needle is out other end, use the thread to pull fabric through.

Great minds cate6 :o

i want a loop turner!!!!!!!!!

PigeonPie · 24/04/2013 17:06

Thanks Unique I probably will and then I'm going to do the same for a skirt pattern; I'm sure that all my A level and City and Guilds tailoring stuff will come back into my aged brain once I actually start sewing properly again.

Pretty much all I've sewn in the last few years is curtains, and dressing up outfits for 2 DSs including lifeboat men and flying suits!

However, I do have a rouleau loop turner, bias binding makers, hams, sleeve boards and the like! Grin

UniqueAndAmazing · 24/04/2013 17:14

ooh, i do need a ham!

there were several at college - all different sizes and shapes

outtolunchagain · 24/04/2013 17:41

Ann did deserve to win however I am not sure it was entirely fair as she trained as a " couture dressmaker in the fifties and sixties" so in fact had quite a head start over the "home sewers".

Apparently the rules said that you must have not been working as a professional dressmaker for 20 years so she was able to enters she has been retired , although she does online classes etc I think .
That said I loved her jacket and her little dress.

flubba · 24/04/2013 18:55

So, unique, would you like me to come up with a few more suggestions about what you could use instead of a loop turner? :o

A long pipe cleaner?
The plastic-covered spring stuff from net curtains?

SoupDragon · 24/04/2013 20:21

Just caught up on this on iPlayer. Ann fully deserved to win :)

I thought all three evening dresses were stunning - though, to my mind, an evening dress is floor length, not cocktail length.

Did anyone notice that Lauren's shirt buttoned up the wrong way?

UniqueAndAmazing · 24/04/2013 21:10

no.
you have to come up with things dh need to buy me.

TheOneWithTheHair · 24/04/2013 21:12

Grin I have a feeling it's going to be a long list!

UniqueAndAmazing · 24/04/2013 21:12

stdg
didn't notice that, are you sure?

totally agree about the dress length

Ds2 was watching it with me, and he noticed it too - it's still on the box, so I might go back and check.

harbinger · 24/04/2013 21:33

Evening dress - did they say if it was black tie or.....a ball gown.

Black tie is not long (for a student) but Ann's dress was appropriate for the age of the model.

LetUsPrey · 24/04/2013 21:33

Loved the final - loved the whole series!

I thought it was Sandra's shirt which buttoned up the wrong way. I kept looking at the buttons on my blouse and then at those on DS1's top and Sandra's were the same as my blouse.

Apologies if someone's mentioned it already - not had chance to catch up on the thread.

TolliverGroat · 24/04/2013 21:41

I've had a quick rewind on Sky+ -- Ann and Lauren both have shirts that button wearer's left over wearer's right, while Sandra's shirt buttons wearer's right over wearer's left.

UniqueAndAmazing · 24/04/2013 22:08

sandra's is wrong then

a man's shirt is the psttern - left over right (so the opening is on the right)

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 24/04/2013 22:13

Yes, sorry - Sandra, not Lauren. I wonder why the judges didn't point it out?

TolliverGroat · 24/04/2013 22:21

They probably did (apparently in real life they had a lengthy going over every detail of every garment with all the positives and negatives highlighted) but I guess it didn't make the final edit.

TolliverGroat · 24/04/2013 22:22

(possibly because they'd already edited "Lauren gets a fly the wrong way round" into a big plot strand in Week 2, so they didn't want to do a "Sandra gets the button placket the wrong way round" thing in Week 4)
