yes but don't put the ironnonnit - hover above it.

RueDeWakening · 21/04/2013 22:10

I drew on my sewing machine with a marker pen, and used the marks as guiding lines to sew along IYSWIM. The marks are still there, perhaps I should make DD another shirred dress? :o

And yes, ironing the shirring helps lots.

nevergoogle · 21/04/2013 22:40

it looks like DS1's duvet cover. I don't think he'd be pleased if i turned it into a dress though.

dawntigga · 22/04/2013 07:32

if anyone wants a pen that's not to expensive and irons off the Frixion range by Pilot do just that. Test a scrap first before using in case it has an adverse effect on your fabric.

Also, instead of drawing on your machines for guidelines, use masking tape. Easily removed and doesn't make your machine look awful.

Tomorrow I'm practicing making rouleau strips, I tried it for my first year to make my own frog fastenings but was hopeless!

:o never

I did the steam which worked well on the nicely shirred bits.

Looking forward to tomorrow's final (?)

Oh it's the final already. :( I've really, enjoyed it. They need to do a longer run next time. And I have two new blogs to follow.

I still want Lauren to win. :)

Babieseverywhere · 22/04/2013 13:23

It is so sad that we are on the finals already :( Here's hoping they do a much longer series next time.

Maybe I'll get around to doing some sewing myself...so far I have locate both my sewing machines and dragged them downstairs with a big bag of fabric and three patterns but I am so rubbish at sewing I don't know what to try first.

Jellykitten1 · 22/04/2013 14:23

I quite happily iron my shirring! I like the sharp/flat look it gives, especially to the top frill.

UniqueAndAmazing · 22/04/2013 14:25

try something straightforward.

a skirt seems like nice and easy, but if you choose a skirt, just one either with an elasticated waistband or one with a normal (not concealed) zip.
or a princess line dress (again don't choose concealed zip!)

UniqueAndAmazing · 22/04/2013 14:32

Right, I bought some new shirring elastic this morning, so i'll have another go later.

I've managed to upload DD's pictures:

here
and the inside

TheOneWithTheHair · 22/04/2013 18:53

Unique I'd be well chuffed if I'd made that. Your dd is the cutest little thing.

I think your dress looks great!

UniqueAndAmazing · 22/04/2013 22:14

thank you Grin
it's why I'm so confused why everyone said shirring is hard.
I definitely have to try with the new elastic.

bruffin · 22/04/2013 22:46

My mum used to make us sheered dresses whwn we were little and seemed to think they were easy. She just used 1 piece of material and did about 6 rows. That was a long time ago in the 60s/70s.

Shesparkles · 23/04/2013 14:20

I mentioned doing it earlier in this thread, but I did some very quiet advertising about giving sewing lessons and I now have 3 people booked in! I'd never have actually for it off the ground without sewing bee!

RueDeWakening · 23/04/2013 15:42

The BBC are taking applications for tr second series of this GrinGrinGrin

Anyone fancy it?!

TheOneWithTheHair · 23/04/2013 16:05

As a complete novice I reckon I probably wouldn't even be able to fill out the application form. Grin

Well done Shesparkles. Good going!

Shesparkles · 23/04/2013 16:51

Ive downloaded the application, I just need to make myself sound windswept and interesting!
I'm not going to get past the 1st sift am I

Soupa · 23/04/2013 17:00

You will! Go for it:) how exciting (just to be good enough).

TunipTheVegedude · 23/04/2013 17:05

Oh it would be beyond fabulous to have a Mumsnet contestant. Or better still, two or three Mumsnet contestants
RubyGates could be the Token Historical Sewer.

UniqueAndAmazing · 23/04/2013 17:24

I'd love to take part, but I can't get away from the shop :(

TheOneWithTheHair · 23/04/2013 17:31

I'll come and mind your shop Unique! And flubba should have a go too!

I'm getting a bit excited about this.

TolliverGroat · 23/04/2013 17:32

I think it's filmed at weekends, if that helps/you have Saturday staff... (have just realised who you are. D'oh! Didn't realised you'd namechanged)

TolliverGroat · 23/04/2013 17:33

Would be good publicity for the shop, potentially...

TheOneWithTheHair · 23/04/2013 17:34

Think I have now you've said that Tolliver. It's not a sewing related shop is it?

TolliverGroat · 23/04/2013 17:38

No, but they might film Unique there for the personal interest segments - or if BBC rules don't allow that then just "runs a [type of shop] near her home in [place]" should get some local attention.
