I've decided to learn to crochet. Have read blogs, watched tutorials, become inspired.

Yesterday I bought practise yarn and a hook.

I have just sat down for the first time today - toddler and baby asleep, DH working late.

I have the video to follow on the iPad. I have a ball of yarn. I have sent the dog to bed.

And I must have left the crochet hook at the till yesterday.

Sad Sad Sad

That's a pain.

I lost my crochet hook yesterday (and the hat I had just finished). I can only assume toddler dd2 has picked it up and 'hidden' it somewhere. I bought another one today because it's easier than finding the other one Blush

NorksAreMessy · 29/10/2012 20:34

Crochet is impossible, anyway.
I have a theory that only certified witches can do it, as it is all magical and mystifying.

[henvy]

Have you looked down the side of the sofa?

belindarose · 29/10/2012 20:35

Well, there is always the chance that the toddler has secreted it somewhere, but I don't think she had access to the bag. Oh well. I'll have a bath instead. Chances for those are rare too.

Don't tell me that, norks. I've convinced myself I'm going to be creating masterpieces by Christmas!

OP posts:
NorksAreMessy · 29/10/2012 20:40

Impossible, I tell you.
I have achieved gorgeousness in EVERY single craft I have ever tried (not even a stealth boast, just the TRUTH)

Crochet left me baffled and sad. DD and I went to a course at my local knitting shop, because I thought 'this is daft, I MUST be able to do this' (arrogant)

DD got it straight away and was merrily rolling her eyes at her stupid mother, wearing the dunce's hat and needing the tutor's attention every three minutes.

Witches, All those crocheters. They have magical powers [hhmm]

belindarose · 29/10/2012 20:43

Sob.

Mathsdidi · 29/10/2012 20:48

It's not magic, it's much easier than knitting (and quicker for those of us with limited patience).

Dd1 is 13 and can crochet, not masterpieces yet but she's crocheting a scarf that will be wearable.

No magical powers needed [hgrin]. You WILL be creating masterpieces fairly soon maybe not by Christmas though.

NorksAreMessy · 29/10/2012 20:48

Look on the bright side. I have a load of crochet hooks I can send you. PM me your address and I will send some witchsticks pronto [hsmile]

NorksAreMessy · 29/10/2012 20:49

maths is clearly a[hsmile]

Mathsdidi · 29/10/2012 20:53

I might be a [hsmile] but don't tell anyone [hwink]

belindarose · 29/10/2012 21:31

Really, norks? Thanks. You will be the first recipient of a....

...thing.

Phacelia · 29/10/2012 21:33

Oh no, no,no. Crochet is easy peasy. Easier than knitting. It just seems hard until you get the hang of it. Honest. I taught myself of youtube, and if I can do it anyone can.

Such a bummer about the hook though. I keep losing mine.

Phacelia · 29/10/2012 21:33

off youtube

blisterpack · 29/10/2012 21:41

It can be done if you have this. Honestly, read the reviews, adults are using it. My 10 year old learnt with that. I am a sewing dunce though so don't get it

NorksAreMessy · 30/10/2012 15:51

Witchsticks on their way!

I have more if anyone would like some! Have sent a variety of sizes to belinda but still have duplicates. I had some mad idea of teaching children to crochet for jewellery making in my after school club, so I bought tons in the charity shop.

Silly norks [hblush]

belindarose · 31/10/2012 16:36

Thanks for the witchsticks, Norks. DD was impressed by the giant bubbles wrap too.

Armed with the book recommended by blister, I am ready to start...if I ever get a spare moment.

Await your gift...!

OP posts:
NorksAreMessy · 31/10/2012 18:10

No gift needed...but may Halloween be an auspicious day to start the witchery [hsmile]

bruffin · 31/10/2012 18:26

I never got crochet either. Have managed fairisle, aran and all sorts of complicated knitting, but never managed to crochet anything other than a square.

belindarose · 31/10/2012 18:36

Oh but I'm making my first creation for you! It's going to be...umm...really good, I'm sure.

LFCisTarkaDahl · 31/10/2012 18:42

I've said this before and I'll say it again - I can make candles, soap, knit, do all manner of crafty shit.

And I can't crochet in any way, really - no way at all.

I started a thread on it 4 Christmasses ago on Christmas day after dh bought me 'the happy hooker' - lots of well meaning and only slightly piss taking mumsnetters tried to help.

They got nowhere Grin I'm completely fuckwitted in this department.

belindarose · 31/10/2012 18:44

La la la, can't hear you

All you "I can't"ers need to come and sign into the Hotel Crochetfornia, we'll soon have you hooking up a storm

ignores own total inability to knit

Love from,

Your Friendly Mumsnet Crochet Witch [hgrin]

ZombieArmsDragOnTheFloor · 31/10/2012 19:37

I agree, only the supremely talented are able to crochet.

NorksAreMessy · 31/10/2012 20:47

Not talent...witchcraft.

purple you intrigue me and scare me a bit...I might stick my nose in and be brave.

belinda you are a sweetheart and I am looking forward to your crocheted model of the taj mahal that I KNOW you are making for me

I would love to learn to make flowers for brooches etc (am a jeweller) that is my goal.
All I have ever achieved with total accuracy is a chain. My Yorkshire Terrier could have managed that [hsad]

Mathsdidi · 31/10/2012 21:15

Where do you live Norks? If you're anywhere near Carlisle I could come and teach you.

I'm very patient [hgrin]. I have taught some of our most cack-handed year 7s to crochet ok looking granny squares. If they can do it, so can you!!!
