How do I work out how much ribbon I need to go round a full circle skirt?

It's floor length for my DD (about 5ft2)

It isn't here or I'd measure it

Damn I need to buy it tonight

It's that Pi thing innit?

thenightsky · 16/03/2012 23:21

Just seen godets comment.... that makes Pi unusable as we don't know depth of said godets.

Buy yards and yards. Is it very expensive?

stealthsquiggle · 16/03/2012 23:22

sorry.

10 should be plenty, still, surely?

KatyMac · 16/03/2012 23:25

The skirt before alteration was about 1.5m - I am assuming we will be adding at least the same amount of hem which makes 3m

Blimey 10 will be loads!!

I am daft aren't i?

Mind you the georgette was very cheap at £2.65 a metre

Would you iron the ribbon in two and just sew one line of stitches, do you think?

You need to use bias binding not straight ribbon to go around a circular hem. Bias binding satin would look pretty or you could buy a special little gadget and make your own. gadget here

KatyMac · 17/03/2012 08:35

I know I should

But I've managed before to 'ease' it round with an occasional mini pleat

didn't know they made it; too lazy to make it Blush

Can you bind it with some of the georgette or other fabric cut into bias strips? that's what I did with my wedding dress which was a circle skirt about 100 years ago

KatyMac · 17/03/2012 10:14

Too lazy

Thanks for the idea Wink

Grin it will look lovely regardless - is it for dancing?

KatyMac · 17/03/2012 13:13

Yes - big comp in April

I'd better get sewing

Damn

Fiddly dum, fiddly dee dee
The ring round the moon is pi x D
But if a hole is to be repaired
The one to use is pi x r squared

See I knew maths would come in useful, eventually!

Is this a fully circular skirt? I suspect it isn't unless it is hooped, however if it is, let's say skirt length is half her height... so we would take 62" (length on either side) + 24" (hole for the waist) = 86" (diameter) x pi (3.141) = 270" /12 = 22' 5"

You can adjust the length and waist nos as necessary.

KatyMac · 19/03/2012 21:33

DD's partners mum thinks we should do hem in georgette

I think it looks better without the ribbon on the hem Blush

OP posts:
stealthsquiggle · 20/03/2012 21:28

Oops. So is currently on or off?

KatyMac · 20/03/2012 21:35

Off; I haven't started it yet

It looks amazing; I'll get some photos of it tomorrow

(don't suppose you know anything about swansdown/maribou??

OP posts:
stealthsquiggle · 20/03/2012 21:42

Not a thing, sorry Grin

KatyMac · 20/03/2012 22:28

Me neither & it needs washing

OP posts:
stealthsquiggle · 20/03/2012 22:55

A quick google suggests hand wash
(Or hand wash cycle), blowdry, and hope for the best

KatyMac · 21/03/2012 08:09

Shall I give it a go?

Maybe?

OP posts:
stealthsquiggle · 21/03/2012 10:12

it depends - if it is so grubby that it is no use unless it is washed, then you don't really have much to lose by trying - and unless anyone has come up with any better ideas, I would go for the gentlest machine cycle if it were me because I know how rough I would be if I tried to hand wash it. Feathers are, on the whole, tougher than we give them credit for, I think - I boil wash feather pillows and duvets quite regularly.

KatyMac · 21/03/2012 13:40

I think I'll ask DH to do it; he is so much better than me

OP posts:
stealthsquiggle · 21/03/2012 13:42

Good idea and then it will be his fault if it all goes horribly wrong
