Ok, new pictures, photobucket.com/albums/c176/NotQuiteCockney/?sc=6 . I like both new hats, although the photos are rubbish. (Am I not holding the camera still?)

Not sure what to do next, am slightly uninspired. Thinking about tubular knitting? DH has a colleague whose wife is having a baby, so I should do one for them ...

Excellent Doktor Tamum, our plan for ze world domination by knitters is proceeding very smoothly! That makes sammac, misdee and lulabell in recent days alone, and we have called MP and SueW back in from the wilderness of Lapsed Knitting...
I just blued £30 on some more ridiculous 80s pattern books (Glorious Knitting for Glorious Queens eg) on abebooks...somebody stop me...
I also committed professional suicide today, egged on by a colleague who turns out to have made most of the sarnies for Casting Off's knitted wedding...we have put a Stitch and Bitch call out in our tedious, po-faced in-house newsletter! I will let you know when I get my P45.
It's lovely to hear from you again MP and to be able to chat with other knitters too.
Bummer about the needle lulabell, rotten luck

Lulabell · 15/02/2006 21:58

Tamum, no i did realise that, fear not so ebony lantern moon eh? Will have to investigate, have an excuse now!

motherpeculiar · 16/02/2006 10:14

Hi all, just found this thread last night

wrote a long message last night all about my recent knitting activities but got sucked off into the ether somewhere somehow...

anyway - just finished "lucky" cardi for DD2 and it's lovely (although I say so myself) - thanks to Marina (I think it was you) who sent me the pattern a year or so ago

also, last night, finished real cute hat for DD2 - my first ever project on dpns which was great fun, especially as I amanged to knit in the wrong direction somehow when I started

I went to a cast-off knitting workshop a couple of w/e ago and it was inspirational. learnt the dpn thing, also how to crochet (I know, I know) - all I can crochet are these little flowers though so the pile of those in the living room is growing...

yesterday I went to check out the knitting section at liberty - not as good as I expected, but lovely to wander through liberty, especially the fabric section next to the knitting...I feel some liberty fabric lined knitted bags coming on...

am also lusting after the LM needles. was my birthday recently and DH hasn't yet got my pressie (I told him I wanted something knitting related so he wisely left it up to me) so maybe I'll get a couple of pairs from him, to accompany the Montse book I've ordered after reading you all rave about it...

isn't it sad? knitting needles and a reader's digest book for my birthday and I am thrilled, what has my life become...

must go do some work, but very glad I found this thread...

motherpeculiar · 16/02/2006 10:22

no idea what happened there - think all the knitting has gone to my head...

I'm obviously very enthusiastic and pleased to be back!!!

tamum · 16/02/2006 13:56

motherpeculiar, nice to see you back (twice) Funnily enough I am making dd a hat on dpns, also for the first time. It's going very slowly though, partly because I'm doing it on small needles to make a denser fabric (she wants a beret) and partly because I decided on Sunday to make stepdd a mohair jumper for her birthday, which is next Wednesday. Eeek. I think I'm going to make it, but only just (front and back done, started first sleeve). Can really recommend Texere for mohair, some really bargains there.

Sammac, do you come through to Edinburgh much? Fabulous shop at the top of our road if you're interested

I have amassed a large collection of fabulous ribbons for dd's cardigan (and many more I hope). Feeling really inspired now....

Marina, mwah hah hah, it's working

KBear · 16/02/2006 14:19

Greetings Knitters - I am a newbie to knitting since my DD got a knitting kit from ELC for her birthday and can't be doing with it (no patience that child!). So I decided to have a go and I'm hooked.

DH is hooting with laughter at the sight of me knitting every night (ok ok, I know I have to r e a l l y concentrate and that involves my tongue poking out the corner of my mouth but I love it and I don't care!!

Marina · 16/02/2006 16:56

I like the ELC kit, it has sweet little bamboo needles (Galt ones are plastic IIRC), you'll not get away Kbear but you'll have to source all your wool online or up in town because us Southsiders don't have gorgeous wool shops at the end of our roads, or even our boroughs
Tamum - I got my first issue of Simply Knitting yesterday, after reading about it here. Why is it so much better than Knitting Magazine !
Knitters are emerging from the woodwork at an alarming rate at work...all sorts of unsuspected knitterati.

KBear · 16/02/2006 21:11

Have you checked out "Choice" in Pickford Lane, Bexleyheath. Or has it, shock horror, closed down? Noooooooo, not now I'm a knitaholic.

tamum · 16/02/2006 22:54

Hello KBear

Marina, there's something so nice and upbeat about Simply Knitting, isn't there? I do get hacked off with its uncritical attitude to everything, but it's still appealing.

fishie · 16/02/2006 23:20

ooh nice busy knitting thread. i've just started the bag for my sister, lovely wool but terrified i'll drop a stitch, it is far too furry to see what to do.

also started a jumper for ds, made of rowan denim, which is just like tiny hard string and keeps falling off the needles. and i've buggered up the patterning so am really pleased to have something else to do.

could do with some advice re lining for bag, will visit indian shops at weekend, are there any fabrics to avoid, issues with attaching material to wool etc or is it just general commonsense?

sammac · 17/02/2006 18:47

Ooo Tamum, that's be nice. Would like to have a nice wool shop to poke around in.

Am disappointed in my cardi- my own fault really. Was talked into the wrong wool and it has come up quite big and rather.......matronly! Not quite me! On the plus side, the huge needles have meant that I finished the back and am halfway up the left front already. Think it will be going to my mum, who is .....bigger and more...matronly (sorry mum!) But at least am on the right tracks again for inspiration. I have seen something I fancy on the Elann sight recommended here so might just go for that.

Or- I could pop through to Tamum'sEdinburgh shop???

fishie · 17/02/2006 21:43

aaarg am being driven mad by tangle of skein. am i really supposed to wind it into a ball first, getting poor dp to hold hands up like in gloomy novels? is there some knack i don't have?

Miaou · 17/02/2006 21:57

helloo .... just shuffling in here to say hi

I feel like a bit of a traitor because I'm a fairweather knitter - I'm usually cross-stitching but revert to knitting when I've not got a kit on the go!

Anyhoo - has anyone ever seen a pattern for knitting adult slippers? It occurred to me that if I sewed suede soles to the bottom then they would be quite hard wearing but also very comfy.

vicimelly · 17/02/2006 22:00

Miaou, I posted on the other thread. incase you don't see it, where can I get the pattern for those gogeous little bunnies?

Miaou · 17/02/2006 22:08

Just posted you a link to the book, vicimelly! I'll repeat it here: here you are

fishie · 17/02/2006 22:12

ooh miaou have been admiring your pretty slippers, really adorable and beautifully made.

i've got a library book with felted bunny slippers, says the size can be adjusted by knitting more or less rows (dur!) and by agitating/length of time felting. am planning to have a go sometime soonish before ds feet are too big.

sure i've seen something more like yours (sans rabbit) in adult size somewhere, try googling garter stitch slippers - maybe debbie bliss?

Miaou · 17/02/2006 22:21

thanks fishie - didn't realise how many free patterns were out there!

vicimelly · 17/02/2006 22:35

Thanks Miaou :D

fishie · 17/02/2006 22:41

miaou - it might have been erika knight i'm thinking of.

kikidee · 17/02/2006 23:29

Sammac, are you in Glasgow? If so, there's a v.nice knitting 'boutique' on Queen Margaret Drive called k1 Yarns. She has lots of lovely wool, including the Opal sock yarn that knits up stripy. She also had interesting patterns too but I had a stroppy toddler with me and was unable to browse.

rubyGsmum · 18/02/2006 10:19

Hi All

Just thought I'd jump in and say "Hi". Not exactly new to knitting but have rediscovered it just recently with a vengeance now that my dd is taking up less of my time, (now 17 months). I was heavily into card making but find that knitting fits in much better with supervising said toddler's play activities. Simply Knitting magazine inspired me about 6 months ago and I've gone on from there. Just tackling socks on dpns with that marvellous opal yarn, (reminds me of a joke about tartan paint). It's great stuff.

Is it just me or does anyone else find themselves absolutely obsessed with knitting - a sort of knitting nutter? I find myself thinking about the various projects I've got on the pins, (I need to have at least 3 on the go at once)at all sorts of bizarre moments and grab one and do a few rows/rounds at every opportunity, (to the detriment of the housework, I have to say). Is there any hope for me? Will the novelty wear off?

NotQuiteCockney · 18/02/2006 13:32

Giraffeski, here is a link re tubular knitting (also called double knitting, but I get that confused with a) twice-knit and b) the yarn type).

I am back, but only just barely.

sammac · 18/02/2006 14:49

Thanks kikidee, I didn't know about that one. Not too far from me- about 15 mins away. I'll try to get to it in the next week or so. Is it in the row of shops just before the bridge?

kikidee · 18/02/2006 20:12

Sammac, when you walk up Queen Margaret Drive from Byres Road, it's on the right hand side past the BBC. There is a row of shops, a nice gift shop, cafe etc, and from Byres Road, it's just after you cross the bridge. It's open Saturday and Sunday but closed on Monday. Hope you like it.

sammac · 18/02/2006 20:59

Thanks, that's where I was thinking. Couple of my pals used to live around there, one in Clouston Street , other in Fergus Drive. Might take a run down tomorrow. Now on my other front, so zooming thru' this
