Ok, new pictures, photobucket.com/albums/c176/NotQuiteCockney/?sc=6 . I like both new hats, although the photos are rubbish. (Am I not holding the camera still?)

Not sure what to do next, am slightly uninspired. Thinking about tubular knitting? DH has a colleague whose wife is having a baby, so I should do one for them ...

Caught you

how the devil are you? I have lost your email addy

SorenLorensen · 31/01/2006 11:24

Yeah but...can any of you knit Jesus?

suzywong · 31/01/2006 11:49

Guffaw!!
Jesus, a general purpose olde world Israeliste and a plate of unfeasably large gonads

Marina · 31/01/2006 11:52

Titter ye not, a dear old lady at church knitted this and it had all the Sunday School enthralled. Lots of discussion as to which one was Judas etc

SorenLorensen · 31/01/2006 11:52

Knitting and religion - how can anyone say MN has dumbed down?

suzywong · 31/01/2006 11:53

you do owe me email Moo

SorenLorensen · 31/01/2006 11:55

Titter, moi? I am the proud owner of an entire knitted nativity scene - it has pride of place in my fireplace every Christmas (we don't have a fire, in case you were wondering). I even have a little Angel Gabriel and she hangs on a thread like she's really flying. It is the epitome of tasteful Christmas decor.

SorenLorensen · 31/01/2006 11:55

I know, I know...

SorenLorensen · 31/01/2006 11:57

This one, well not this exact one - this one doesn't have an angel

SorenLorensen · 31/01/2006 11:58

It has a donkey though - I don't have a donkey. I have a Holy Ghost though (little glow in the dark Duplo ghost).

I am fighting with the chevrony thing. I finally got the pinhole co working fine, had to do it about 20 times to get it working right.

But both Barbara G. Walker and Montse "Madwoman" Stanley want me to use (K, YO, K) in one stitch as a double increase. They say it doesn't make a hole. It does! Gr.

Well, I'll see how it looks as a real hat. I'm doing it with two-row horizontal stripes to emphasize the chevronnyness of it. Which I have yet to see, as I keep frogging it ...

Oh, I've realised knitting from the top is pretty good, though. I'm not minding that part, at all.

I am a bit annoyed to realise that I don't know how many stitches I want for the body of the hat, though - as it is chevrons, the number isn't the same as normal stocking stitch. Bugger. I guess I'll keep adding stitches and see how it looks ...

NQC that is making me feel dizzy! Hope it works out. You sound incredibly clever

I am doing a plain stocking stitch hat for DD1 with a funny bobbly turn up. In between the flowery intsrsia sweater for DD2!

tamum · 31/01/2006 14:45

Moo, I've got a magazine with a pattern for the nativity set but for some reason the instructions for the beards just cracks me up every time. Maybe I'll try next year...

NQC, I am sure this isn't the problem but with the K YO K into one stitch are you knitting into the back of the stitch the second time? I can see that knitting into the front might give a hole. Meanwhile I have just bought another Noro book

NotQuiteCockney · 31/01/2006 17:02

tamum, I hadn't been doing k1b, but I've tried it, and it seems to work better. Neither Montse Madwoman or Barbara G. Walker seem to mention this method - is (k, yo, k) always meant to mean the second k is through the back leg of the stitch? The diagram in Montse's book seems to imply it's the front, too.

OP posts:
NotQuiteCockney · 31/01/2006 18:33

Hm, (k, yo, kb) seems to make a smaller hole, but looks less good with the colour changes. (The stitch I'm doing the whole k-yo-k to is a different colour than the working yarn.)

tamum · 31/01/2006 18:50

Oh bummer. I just thought that because when you knit into the same stitch twice you usually do one through the front and one through the back, plus knitting into backs of stitches often gets rid of holes, but that's no good if the colour goes wrong, is it?

I had such a nice time in my local knitting shop today- it was my first proper time in there since the owner died and the person who's running it now was a very close friend of hers so we had a bit of a cry, and a very good chat remembering her. They're going to start workshops again soon which is good, too.

NotQuiteCockney · 31/01/2006 21:51

Learning a new trick to avoid holes is always good.

It's very odd knitting a hat from the top. I don't know what the head circumference for it will be, but I have better control over the length (or would, if it wasn't all chevronny).

OP posts:
NotQuiteCockney · 01/02/2006 12:35

It's looking good now. It took quite a few starts, and I've decided to tolerate a small amount of errors, but it's looking reasonable. Maybe half done, but the really hard bit is the bit at the start.

I suspect that knitting from the top down results in a tidier crown, as you see it develop, and can frog it easier if you're not happy.

OP posts:
tamum · 01/02/2006 14:42

That sounds sensible, actually. Looking forward to seeing it I got Mary Thomas's knitting patterns book today, and it's much more comprehensive than I thought. A bit old fashioned but loads in there. I've been making dd some dolls' ponchos and it's an excellent way to practise a stitch and have something to show for it! (You just make two little rectangles).

How are you doing, BTW?

NotQuiteCockney · 01/02/2006 17:44

I am ok. I'm probably thoroughly deluded, but I feel reasonably able to cope today.

And I think I have decided flights, etc etc, and have accommodation sorted finally, so we are going.

tamum · 01/02/2006 19:23

I'm glad you've got teh practical stuff sorted, at least.
xx

NotQuiteCockney · 03/02/2006 09:57

Ok, the zigzag stripey hat is nearly done. I do like the top-down thing, will probably get the Barbara G. Walker book about doing everything top-down.

But, I'm not sure how to end it. My options:

  • put a short 2x2 rib on it. This will have to be one colour (I think?) because changing colours on the perl bit would look ugly. The hat would then be a bit puffy, but I think it's too big for the baby anyway, who is 5lbs or something. Also, I worry the zigzag thing would look wierd with a rib.
  • End it with a loose cast on (suspended? something like that) to emphasize the zigzag thing. This would be cute, I think but maybe less practical, too big. Also, will it roll up? Underside is ugly, thanks to colour changes.
  • End it with ruffles (make extra stitches just before cast on). Would this keep it from rolling up?

So, yeah, I'm undecided.

This Jaeger DK stuff will last forever though. With one ball of the pale green, I've done a whole baby hat, half of this hat, and the detailing on the blue one with the Greek frets. I have 51 balls of this stuff! I think it may be time to make sweaters.
