Anyone want to join me in beating craft procrastination?

I keep meaning to start (and more importantly complete!) a knitting project but am findi g it hard to get started. I do have a young baby but I have got slots in the day I could craft, but I keep putting it off. Would anyone join me in a thread where we say what we've got done and encourage each other? Bit like I did over on a fly lady thread when I was getting my house in order. Any craft you like, big or small projects at any stage.

Hi

I'll join you I actually run a craft business to get young children into arts and crafts from a very early age (www.littledoers.com/funpacks) but I am so busy with designing and producing the packs for that and my T Shirt design business that I barely find any time to start the projects I've determined to do. I've been meaning to make some xmas present and ds some cords but have I done it:No.

Anyhow I salute and support you fellow crafter!

Dingle · 23/11/2011 08:48

I haven't crafter "seriously" for just over a year after I had a bit of a health scare......I keep telling myself I will start knitting again...or make a few Christmas pressies, or make a start on my Christmas cards, or design those Wedding Invites I have been asked to do....or...or ...or.or...Blush

Familydilemma · 23/11/2011 11:01

Morning! So today I am going to cast on the back of my daughter's cardigan. No more-that would be an achievement. I'll post again when I've done it. Nice to have some company Smile

Oooo, I'd love to join! I'm just starting out (sort of - I learnt to do basic knitting as a girl so I'm not starting completely from scratch). I'm planning to knit a bramble stitch scarf for my sister (who is working in China at the moment) and a lovely baby blanket for my friend. I'm possibly being overambitious but I'm keen to give it a go. I just need to get the right needles and some yarn to get going. Although the book I'm using does seem to favour quite expensive yarn (is £10 a ball expensive? it seems so to me!).

Familydilemma · 23/11/2011 12:56

Depends on how much you need for the project-think of it as whether you can afford to do the project rather than cost per ball. Go on...go and get the yarn and needles and let us know how you get on!

Methinks I need to set myself a target! I have just got myself a few new digi images and today I will try to make up 20 sentiments for my Xmas cards!
Thank you for the kick up the backside...oops...motivation.

PurpleFrog · 23/11/2011 13:25

thehamburglar - if you are knitting something biggish that you want to wear and wash well then in my opinion it is worth paying for good yarn, otherwise the knitting is a waste of time and effort. [ I have learned that from experience having gone down the "bargain yarn" route as a student many years ago.] Have a look at reviews of the yarn you want to use on Ravelry.

Dingle · 23/11/2011 16:04

Although it's lovely to get the best wools, I think that if you are first starting out, it may be advisable to get a more reasonable priced wool until you have a little more experience. Wink

PurpleFrog · 23/11/2011 16:59

Yes - £10 a ball is expensive - assuming that is 50g of course. I meant don't use the cheapest you can find, but get a "good" one that will wear well without going bobbly within a couple of weeks. I agree with Dingle that you should probably avoid the "best" wools until you get a bit more practice.

Dingle - Hello there! [waves]

I shall join in.

Before the weekend I need to make 3 personalised Santa sacks and a cover for a stool.
Before Xmas I need to pin, sew and bind a quilt for my DS and make some tree ornaments.

Dingle · 23/11/2011 17:16

LOL, hello Dizzy [waves back]

I have been a good girl, matched up 4 image with backing papers and coloured them. Downloaded some new Xmas sentiments, printed, cut out and coloured them.Just adding a few finishing touches.

dizzyday07 · 23/11/2011 19:18

I've just remembered that I have 2 strings of bunting and a cushion to make for Xmas too!

WipsGlitter · 23/11/2011 20:01

Hello! I have the stuff to make Christmas decorations but lack the motivation. End up on here or watching tv! The light in the sitting room isn't very good but it's too cold to sit in the kitchen.

angelpantser · 23/11/2011 20:12

I have today finally finished two knitted cardigans for my lovely twin nephews (yay!) BUT I have 40 Christmas cards to make (for personal distribution) and another 20 or so to make for the PTA craft fair on 2nd December - I have 5 done so far. Planning to sit tonight and try to work out a pattern for a hot water bottle cover (for the craft fair) as I prefer to knit of an evening. So I guess I'd rather start a new project than finish an old one.

Don't ask me about the 12 year old patchwork quilt that I am determined to finish so that my eldest daughter can take it to Uni with her next year. I am trying to block out the fact that she was in primary school when I started it!

thehamburglar · 23/11/2011 20:28

Thanks for the yarn advice. I am trying to find a cheaper alternative to the yarn suggested but am struggling to find something with same tension & needle size. Gah!

Familydilemma · 23/11/2011 20:32

Okay-so I've cast on the jumper! Smile Anyone got small bits of progress to share-nothing too daunting? I'm aiming for fifteen mins a day on a project of some kind with permission to stop or carry on at that point! Trying to block out visions of silly amount of wool stashed and focus on what I've done. Glad I'm not the only one!

I dreamed that I had finished knitting DS's school scarf. Sadly it was only a dream, and it's still less than half done :(

I really need to sit and do it - in fact I'm going to watch Kirsty and do it right now!

Familydilemma · 23/11/2011 20:33

Well done on the jumpers angelpanster Smile

So I decided to finish up a few projects in my basket, sewn up a little knitted shrug for DD and finished knitting a teeny baby hat for when DD first arrived, but it's too small, friend due in a few weeks though, so will make a lovely gift. With the dark evenings and crap tv I'm going to finish off my little odds and ends in my other baskets too, or frog them if they are poo.

Can anyone give me any tips on a looser cast off? The shrug has the sleeves knitted all in one piece, so cast on is at one wrist and the cast off at the other and it's rather tight.

Dingle · 23/11/2011 21:54

Could you cast off on a larger needle? Is it rib? A cast off ribwise is often more elastic I think!

I haven't achieved much today but at least I have done something.

My Xmas sentiments

Well done on your creativity everyone. x

Tangle · 23/11/2011 22:46

Can I join in?

I decided that making lots of Christmas presents was a really good idea - conveniently ignoring the fact that next DC is due on Christmas Eve (and of course babies don't always turn up on their due date). At the moment I've got:

  1. A little felt bag with appliqué to finish for DD1.
  2. A felt cushion cover with appliqué to finish for DD1's friend.
  3. A soft toy to make for DD1's friend's younger brother.
  4. A bag to finish for a good friend.

In an ideal world I'd then also make a new cot for DD1's favourite doll and make some bedding for it, make DD1 a new fleece coat (got the pattern and the fleece, and she's thoroughly grown out of the one I made 2 yrs ago) and finish all the bits and pieces in the bottom of the mending/sewing bag (mostly DD1's, mostly things she's grown out of Blush)

I think I'll manage if all as long as I manage to keep up the momentum. Hoping that having people looking over my shoulder will help me keep going!

ChristinedePizanne · 23/11/2011 22:53

I have done 8 more rows thanks to this thread :)
