Just thought I would start a thread that can be resurrected when any of us have bits and pieces to share.

NQC, there is a tie pattern in the latest issue of Interweave Knits

For hand-dyed yarn fans, I recently ordered some silk from Curious Yarns that was gorgeous. Highly recommended!

I have made vague plans to do hand-dying! One of my local friends likes to knit (she's borrowed one of my Barbara Walker books), and is a painter, and hence Knows about Colour. (I do not.)

Is Interweave Knits an online one?

I am currently making a mobius scarf. The technique is very very weird, and thinking about it makes my head hurt. You cast on in the middle of the scarf, and then knit out from there.

I still haven't made a tie. Technically, this moebius scarf is for FIL, but I have no idea how it will come out, and it's made from cheap cheap yarn, so I probably won't give it to him.

tamum · 22/12/2005 19:33

It's not online, although you can view most of the projects (with the exception of the tie, grrr) here . I subscribe, but I think Borders sell it. I've seen a pattern for a Moebius scarf, incredibly clever but confusing, as you say.

Durrr, just realised the tie is on there. Sorry!

NotQuiteCockney · 22/12/2005 19:40

Oooh, those look like nice patterns. How is the tie made?

The needles I want to use to make ties showed up today (small circulars), so I might make a start on one ...

tamum · 22/12/2005 19:59

It seems to be flat, with selvedge edges joined at the back. That means sewing I guess . That actually reminds me of the other thing I meant to say- I am knitting a raglan cardigan using that generic Ann Budd pattern book, and the raglans in there are knitted almost seamlessly, with the sleeves joined in and then knitted in the round. I though it might appeal if you ever do fancy knitting a sweater....

NotQuiteCockney · 22/12/2005 20:03

Is the Ann Budd that "seamfree sweaters" book? I think/hope I'm getting that one for Xmas.

I do want to move on from hats, I have been thinking about it.

NotQuiteCockney · 22/12/2005 20:04

Oh, I didn't totally hate sewing up the bits of blanket. I think the problem I have with sewing up is, I don't really know how to do it. With knitting, I know I can do it "perfectly". Sewing up, I can't. I probably just need to practice more.

tamum · 22/12/2005 20:07

Yes, I know what you mean. It took me ages to get the hang of mattress stitch to be honest, I used to backstitch everything for ages.

No, the seamfree one is a different book. The Ann Budd one is this , and is more varied than the seamfree one IMHO. They are both useful in different ways though- seamfree is much more chatty!

I'm into Fair isle knitting at the mo, just knitted i don't know how many hats!

I think i am too impatient for sweaters though, I get bored too quickly IYSWIM. Thats why fair isle knitting holds my interest i suppose- i have to change what i am doing every row.

NotQuiteCockney · 22/12/2005 20:30

Giraffe, I do textured hats, mostly. Similar logic. I should try fairisle, though, I've done a wee bit of it, and hated it less than intarsia.

tamum · 22/12/2005 20:31

I know what you mean Giraffe (may I call you that? ) but I do quite like mindless knitting sometimes for in front of the TV. The worst is stuff where you have to keep counting and it takes ages. There are some groovy hats in the issue of IK I linked to

OP posts:
ThereWASaGiraffeInTheNativity · 22/12/2005 20:40

Most people call me what they want anyway TM

I hate hate hate intarsia. I enjoy being able to keep both colours going at once with fairisle, don't know why, maybe I'm a glutton for punishment!

I know what you mean about mindless knitting sometimes, bnut since we got rid of the telly i just have a dvd every couple of days so i don't have that problem, although being able to answer dp when he is asking me complicated technical questions about climbing gear would be nice occasionally!

tamum · 22/12/2005 20:54

I hate intarsia too, fairisle is much better. I am still halfway through an intarsia jumper I started for dd when she was 18 months. She's not 7 so I guess I should admit defeat

Grin
tamum · 22/12/2005 20:56

She's now 7 sorry.

I'm going to make mysefl a hat next as i seem to be that only one in tnhe family with a cold head. I fancy this hat but i cast it on today and it seemed totally wrong so will have to do a swatch and change the stitches i think.

tamum · 22/12/2005 21:09

I was thinking the other day that I should make myself a hat. That one's nice, I like cables. I might try this one . Hmmm...

OP posts:
ThereWASaGiraffeInTheNativity · 22/12/2005 21:13

Ah but mine was free!

MARINAtivityPlay · 22/12/2005 21:20

I bought a hilarious eighties Susan Duckworth pattern book on Abebooks last week. I am torn between a marquee with giant instarsia peonies on it or a teeny puff-sleeved geometric nightmare crop top. What were they on in those days!
I also have to report that the John Lewis "haberdashery" dept in Oxford Street seems to have gone still further down the pan with regards to stocking anything like the full range of Debbie Bliss and Rowan yarns. Plenty of hairy, scratchy, synthetic stuff though
After seeing a NQC hat I feel simultaneously daunted and inspired

NotQuiteCockney · 22/12/2005 21:28

I think I have the necessary info to make tamum's one.

I'm really interested in the small-circular-stuff-with-a-very-long-circular-needle thing, or with two circulars. two circulars , one circular

tamum · 22/12/2005 21:29

I love the sound of the marquee It's amazing how dated eighties patterns seem, isn't it? Maybe it's the padded shoulders....

Such a shame about JL. Ours has got rather better of late. Hey, we can visit my LYS when you are here, if it's open

OP posts:
ThereWASaGiraffeInTheNativity · 22/12/2005 21:29

Ah, yes, the magic loop. What do you do atm then? two circulars or four dps?

ThereWASaGiraffeInTheNativity · 22/12/2005 21:30

Our JL isn't too bad either atch. But they definitely don't stock the full debbie bliss range.

tamum · 22/12/2005 21:30

That two circulars is sometimes called magic loop, I think, isn't it? I would quite like to try some socks, so if I could get away without dpns I'd be very pleased.

OP posts:
tamum · 22/12/2005 21:31

Aargh, too slow
