Knitting chat

Is this a good place to have a place for just chat, perhaps tangentially touching on knitting or any craft.

I am always chopping and changing my projects and have lost count of unfinished ones. I enjoy the chat around the stuff.

Today I am feeling so flattened I am almost certainly about to start a new project. I always get cheered up by a new project and depressed when I finish anything. Currently the most outrageous project outstanding is a sweater that actually took about three weeks to knit, not going much, and has been waiting for the final three seams to be stitched for over two years now. Anyone else feel the same?

betty a slipped stitch edge is where you slip the first stitch of each row. i've been doing that on my scarf pattern and it gives a neat edge. my pattern says to slip purlwise but think you can do it either way, the pattern will probably say. :)

i'm still knitting my scarf and waiting on needles to start dd's hat.
BUT the MN blanket squares are done, look good and just need posting. :)

Goldberry · 13/09/2011 10:11

warthog - yes it's very tricky isn't it! I tried 2 rows of a proper lace shawl pattern and gave up when I realised I already had the wrong number of stitches! It's ok just doing knit every row though, although it feels quite weird to knit with. I'd love to have a go at doing a lace knit pattern, but I think I'd have to do it with a non-fluffy yarn.

warthog · 13/09/2011 10:26

agreed - i changed to a lovely fine silk instead and it worked beautifully. the kid silk haze is really sticky and because it's so fine and fluffy, very hard to see what's going on.

bettymum, i knitted that scarf for my dh. it's a fabulous pattern.

Bettymum · 13/09/2011 11:00

Oh that's good to know warthog! It's actually for my DH :) he's just bought a new coat that's very black and very plain and he needs a nice scarf.
The colours are just wonderful in the yarn.

warthog · 13/09/2011 11:56

are you using the same colours that jared flood suggested?

Bettymum · 13/09/2011 12:00

No, I'm not, I spent about half an hour in John Lewis studying every colour label on every ball of yarnBlush unable to find the ones he used, so I got two balls of 47, one of 211 and one of 349. I think they look manly but colourful.
When I got back to my desk and checked the colour charts, the ones he used have long been discontinued - which makes sense given the link was from 2007. His scarf does look beautiful, I hope mine works - I don't think the stripes will be as contrasty as his. Am going to have to try and knit it in my lunchtimes as I can't take it home!

warthog · 13/09/2011 13:25

i'm sure it will be lovely. and subtle differences in colour will still show up.

warthog · 13/09/2011 13:27

and also if there's a colour in there you don't like, you can always cut that bit out.

Bettymum · 13/09/2011 13:55

Started at lunchtime! I went to the park just near our office and literally as I'd cast on the 39th stitch it started to rain! Luckily there's a bandstand there so I went to shelter in there...followed by about 30 primary kids complete with packed lunches Grin. Some of them were quite interested in the knitting.
Anyway I've done about 6 rows of stripes already and I think it's going to be gorgeous. Quite masculine but really interesting when you look at the colour variations.

levantine · 13/09/2011 14:21

Bettymum I made that scarf for my dh too, I really enjoyed knitting it

MorrisZapp · 13/09/2011 14:43

Hello! Another knitter here.

I have dipped in and out of knitting since I was a teenager. I can only cast off and do plain and purl, but love rib/ moss/ garter stitch anyway so that's all I need.

I can't cast on - I just make loops on my finger and slide them on the needle!!

I only ever make either a) very small projects (ie Debbie Bliss baby hat, knits up in a day) or b) bigger projects using mega chunky wool and huuuge needles.

Haven't the patience for anything else.

Tonight, I will sew up my fab Sirdar denim ultra chunky jacket, do we post pics up on here? I won't post pic until buttons arrive from Italy... oh ebay how I love you.

(stash freaks, I will buy chunky or mega chunky from you for fair price)

MorrisZapp · 13/09/2011 14:46

ps I once knitted a baby hat whilst on the train - and had to fend off one old lady after another... 'ooooh what's that you're knitting?' etc. Great fun.

I have DS now and that wee head won't warm itself up... very keen to knit the Debbie Bliss 'scarf hat' thingy, ie a scarf with a little seam sewn in to make it into a scarf with built in hat. My gran assures me they were all the rage during the war! V cute too.

warthog · 13/09/2011 20:26

oooh how exciting! sounds like it's going to be finished in no time!

so morriszapp... buttons from italy eh? do you have a website??

Bettymum · 14/09/2011 13:30

A few more row in the sunshine today...also I started my Salsa scarf last night, amazing stuff! I didn't start it till about 9pm but it's only 5 stitches, and it's just knitting, so it is coming up really really fast. Think my mum sister other sister SIL will be getting one for christmas!

LatteLady · 14/09/2011 13:33

Told you it was easy Bettymum... I usually make mine over 10 stitches, it is really flouncy then.

Bettymum · 14/09/2011 14:12

You did LatteLady :) might try 8 or 10 stiches next time.

LatteLady · 16/09/2011 11:33

You might want to try some of the other tapes in the Katia range, Bettymum - the Triana or Tango, take a look at my blog as I did a piece on tape yarns a couple of months ago.

Bettymum · 16/09/2011 12:21

Will do, thank you.
I will be flouncing round London modelling my fabby new scarf tomorrow :).

That's really lovely bran

calrabbit · 16/09/2011 15:42

Can I just ask bran what wool you are using for that, clearly I have not got enough projects on the go and that looks lovely.

Terpsichore · 16/09/2011 15:56

Mmmmm, I like the look of that pink scarf. I've made one very similar, but with raised stripes that zig-zag rather than curve - it's called 'Meandering Rib', on the Lion Brand website here (can't link directly to the pattern as you have to register, but it's free, then just search for 'meandering').

And the Noro stripe scarf - utterly gorgeous. I made one last year and it's about twice as long as it needs to be because I just couldn't stop - the emerging colours were just too wonderful. I have the yarn for another one....

Ooo that wavy scarf is interesting! I got myself a ball of the tape yarn last week, no idea when I will get round to it!
