Knitting chat

Is this a good place to have a place for just chat, perhaps tangentially touching on knitting or any craft.

I am always chopping and changing my projects and have lost count of unfinished ones. I enjoy the chat around the stuff.

Today I am feeling so flattened I am almost certainly about to start a new project. I always get cheered up by a new project and depressed when I finish anything. Currently the most outrageous project outstanding is a sweater that actually took about three weeks to knit, not going much, and has been waiting for the final three seams to be stitched for over two years now. Anyone else feel the same?

Blush I started this thread, but it isn't 'my' thread.

Please, please, please, anyone just join in, and even if you don't get a reply straight away please keep posting. It is just nice to be able to chat 'knitty'

I have to go the local Knit and Knatter, whether I like it or not, once DS starts school. It is the church where my father goes, and his ladyfriend is a member. I am terrified. They are currently knitting dog blankets (a worthy cause) but I am very nervous. They are all, 'down to earth, say what I mean and mean what I say, what's this new fangled circular needle, pass the pink acrylic' types. Actually they are very nice, but I am dreading it. Also there is politics, and arguments with other members of the church about a knitting stall etc.

oh i would love to find a knit and knatter type thing near me!
how do you find one?
(dh is out again tonight and i'm owed a few nights of him putting the kids to bed single handedly!)

my mojo is back which is just as well given my splurge online earlier today. the lacy sarf has holes in the right places again. :)

just doing that till my wool for WTW blanket arrives and then i'll have to get cracking on that. i've not knitted to any sort of deadline before... i must get those squares done in time! they are VIK (very important knitting)

LatteLady · 01/09/2011 22:48

whenisit... Have you looked on Ravelry? Whereabouts in the country are you... am sure we could find you one :)

wannabesybil · 07/09/2011 09:24

Just thought I would confess - I was feeling bad yesterday so I started another project - so make that one zillion and one unfinished projects.

Sigh

I'm in a bit of a quandary - I had vowed NOT to start another project until I've finished some off, but I'm going to a wedding in October and I have some gorgeous Kidsilk Haze yarn which would make a lovely shawl to go with my dress for the wedding. Surely that's a good enough excuse...?

Catsmamma · 07/09/2011 10:48

I am trying to use up all the odd wool and yarn I have

I also like to crochet so thought i'd make a "patchwork" crochet blanket, 12 hexagons in and I am bored rigid and thinking about scarves

I will make spiral scarf instead if I can find my circular needles, and maybe an owl hat for dog walking duties.

levantine · 07/09/2011 10:49

Goldberry that sounds gorgeous, you MUST make it! Link to pattern? Grin

Bettymum · 07/09/2011 14:29

Ooh yes Goldberry that does sound nice, I have a pattern somewhere for a lacy scarf using that yarn but it looks quite complicated so I haven't attempted it.
I did go to John Lewis at lunchtime to buy one skein of embroidery silk and somehow came out with two balls of the special wool that you use to make frilly scarves, I thought they'd make nice presents. Has anyone done one? I have instructions but it looks very very odd, maybe it'll become clear once I start?

LatteLady · 07/09/2011 15:04

Bettymum... which yarns did you buy... is it CanCan or Tango... they are really v easy and grow quickly and look fab!

Bettymum · 07/09/2011 20:43

I got two - one is Sirdar Salsa and one is Schachenmayr smc Frilly. I know if I have problems there's a lady in there that'll help, but I'd like to at least attempt it myself!

monkeypuzzeltree · 07/09/2011 21:42

My name is monkeypuzzeltree and I have a knitting problem.

There, I've said it! Finished a cute little aran cardi for DD at the weekend, but have a long waistcoat for DD in the bag, and a jumper to finish and a tunic for me on the go. I have a rule, no more than 5 projects on the go at one time and that includes any that need sewing up. Sometimes I break my rules.

I also have a huge stash of wool, I should never have signed up to Deramores website, they have a deal on something every week, I am weak!

So funny to see that I am not the only one who loves the thrill of a new project! I do get arm ache though, often put a pillow under my right arm which helps.

wannabesybil · 08/09/2011 00:10

Monkeypuzzletree - I know what you mean about the arms. I have dislocated four shoulders (okay, the right one once, but it took two years to get right again and the left one three times, or four if you include the time it froze exactly thirty days after dislocation...) and I may use the pillow idea. I often lean the weight of one arm or the other on the arm of the chair.

btw, if you do dislocate your shoulder, which I don't advise because it hurts, the poly sling they give you is great to use as a pin cushion if you are doing cross stitch.

I was promising and promising myself. However, it was indeed yarn from Deramores who ROCK that tempted me. And it is a sweater for my darling uncle who needs new sweaters. So that's a good excuse, right? Especially if I actually finish it....

I am so fed up with myself.

A pattern that should have been in the bag with the yarn has got out and had stuff spilled on it and is so stuck together it is beyond saving. It had everything I wanted, nice, basic, dropped sleeves (I loathe raglans with passion), length and because it was mainly stocking stitch it was cheap on the yarn.

Another one ordered from ebay (my friend) but I am just so fed up with myself about it. I thought I had managed to rescue all from my spills from my four year old, but I missed this. I don't even know how it got there. I could cry.

may i join?

i do lots of knitting. more than 30 years of it Hmm i'm knitting maaaaaad.

wannabesybil · 11/09/2011 09:00

warthog - as far as I'm concerned, the more the merrier.

Tomorrow I have to go to the local Knit and Knatter. I really don't want to, but I don't really have a choice. I am dreading it. They are nice ladies but the average age is thirty years older than me, and I will be lucky if I am allowed to knit what I want. I have to go because if I don't it will make things harder for my dad, as it is the church he goes to.

Goldberry · 12/09/2011 10:12

Well, I have succumbed and started my shawl. I'm just doing a knit-every-row one as the patterns for lace ones all looked really tricky and I'm not used to knitting with that kind of yarn. It looks lovely and lacy in the Kidsilk Haze anyway though!

warthog · 12/09/2011 11:27

Shock wannabesybil! you're not allowed to knit what you want?? what do they want you to knit?

good luck goldberry, that kidsilk haze is tricky stuff. i tried to knit a swallowtail shawl in it and ended up taking it back. but mainly because the yo's just seemed to get swallowed up.

i'm re-knitting a sweater's sleeves for a friend since they turned out too short. i hate that kind of fiddly job.

wannabesybil · 12/09/2011 17:13

warthog - it's the catsbum mouth at non conventional stuff or 'weird' yarn (most of my stuff). They say they have enough for a stall for the Christmas fair, so want everyone to knit dog blankets. This is a Good Thing, but I want to get rid of some of my outstanding stuff.

Bottled it, didn't go, but OH was home. No excuse next week Sad

One of the things lurking in my 'to do' mountain is a sweater made from King Cole's Haze. Has anyone tried that? It looks lush.

OP posts:
warthog · 12/09/2011 17:29

maybe they're secretly jealous? and in 6 months time everyone's going to be using your yarns.

not used king cole haze. let us know what it's like.

prolificwillybreeder · 12/09/2011 17:43

I knew I shouldn't have opened this thread! Now the ottoman my feet are resting on is crying to be opened so I can retrieve the 2 year old knitting and try again.
I have only myself to blame!
( I really do not have time to knit, 2 under 2, moving house and wrestling with a sewing machine I have no idea how to use).
Ah well! I'll cast on and DP can have pasta for tea :)

That sounds lovely - are they the shawls that you can pull through a wedding ring as they're so fine?

Afraid I have to link to a question that someone put on another thread, that made me go out and buy four balls of Noro silk yesterday lunchtime. Here are the instructions for this gorgeous scarf

"The scarf is worked over an odd number of stitches in 1×1 ribbing which, in my opinion has two big benefits: the scarf is reversible and behaves very well (no curling) while also plumping up into a thick fabric that will look suspiciously like stockinette if you leave it unblocked. I cast on 39 stitches using US7/4.5mm needles to get a width of about 5.5 inches. On scarves of this nature I prefer to work a slipped stitch edging which adds a nice, polished touch and perfectly hides the working yarn as you carry it up the sides whilst striping to your heart?s content. I worked two-row stripes using two different colorways of Silk Garden, slipping (purlwise) the first and last stitch on the second row of every stripe."

OK - what is a slipped stich edging? Don't understand that bit and my Knitting for Dummies book which is my reference bible doesn't seem to mention it. Anyone?? The wool is calling to my under my desk :).
