I made myself a wallet, just for fun - I love sewing, i put a picture on Facebook of my finished very first ever attempt - and 6 people have asked me to make them one, either for themselves or as a gift. Theyve asked how much to charge

(photos are on my profile)

its not really my thing, its very cath kidston, but it was scraps I had from other projects (pin boards)

tell me what you think??

could I do a craft fair and sell things like this? I really enjoyed it

it doesn't look flimsy owo - set up a folksy shop

Arion · 16/06/2011 08:31

I am a wallet / bag fiend, don't care much for the fabric (don't like Kath Kidston though) but the style and quality look good. If it is stiffened, I would definitely pay £15 for one in fabric I liked. Love the nappy holder, larger ones would be great as toyboxes.

OP changing the colour of your blog is very easy on blogspot. I need to go pack but will direct you to it this evening if you haven't worked it out :)

The purse/wallet is cute, I'd recommend looking on Etsy to see how much these things go for on there, but £12+ seems right to me, not sure of the size though...? If it's larger then put a bigger price tag on it ;) I do agree with gapants to some extent though, it does look a little flimsy and that it could get dirty eaily, but I think the type of people who would buy it are probably going to be the type's who'd look after it. Though if you could experiment with ways to stiffen them like Arion said that would be advantageous :)

gapants · 16/06/2011 14:15

op sorry I don't mean flimsy as in poorly made, I did note that it was well made looking. It is, and very pretty.

You said the fabric was off cuts, so how much fabric is in each one? GlobalTex make Cath Kidston similar pattern material which I can buy for £6/m in Bristol. Yes the zips cost, but if you were buying many then you would still be able to eek out a profit.

I make lots of things for my home/friends (curtains, bags, bunting etc) and maybe as I can make things it then makes me baulk at the suggested price of £15. I also live in Somerset and go to lots of craft fairs, independant markets and have not seen anything like what you produce. I do see lovely bunting for a childs room, double faced, with quality fabric and well made sell for £5/ for 2 metres. Hand made fabric door stops, with handles, again nice fabric and well made for £8. Just to give you an idea.

Also, the Cath Kidston wallets are made of oil cloth and have thick card in them so they hold their shape. Money is very dirty and will mark the fabric easily. Just an obeservation, not a criticism. Like you say they can go in the wash.

I really didn't mean to knock your confidence. Sorry.

Off topic slightly, Op I just looked at your blog and I wondered how you achieved those stylized pics of your kids at the bottom?

I really want to do something like that with a photo of my dd. If you don't mind telling me I'd be really grateful.

OnlyWantsOne · 16/06/2011 18:44

photoshop :) I will post about them on my blog if you want :)

Oh yes please...my FIL actually runs an imaging company and so he can run me up a canvas etc for free, I just wondered how you achieved the effect? It looks brill. Im looking for something fun for DD's new bedroom wall and I have this great pic of her in sunglasses that would work really well.

OnlyWantsOne · 16/06/2011 19:34

Do you have photoshop or would you like me to do it for you? X

OP posts:
Tinkerisdead · 16/06/2011 21:24

FIL has photoshop, framing studio etc so I can persuade him to do it for me I just didnt know how you created thepop art style to the actual print? Will you feature it on your blog for me pretty please?

OnlyWantsOne · 16/06/2011 23:29

This is really good! Yes, you could do craft fairs, but need to allow enough time to build up enough stock. I think lots of small 'sod it, I'll have it' cheaper items are a good idea to keep people buying as an impulse type purchase. I think price may depend slightly on whether you live/will be craft fairing in a wealthier area tbh. I agree people can underestimate the value of good quality hand made, but wrt sites like Etsy, people who go on there already tend to see this value, but not necessarily always away from there iuswim.

OnlyWantsOne · 17/06/2011 15:04

here you go tutorial for you

Tinkerisdead · 17/06/2011 15:34

Im in the process of writing another tutorial for photo shop - was that one clear and easy to understand or do I need more instruction???

OP posts:
Tinkerisdead · 18/06/2011 20:51

It seems clear enough tp me. I've got photoshop elements so was about to have a whirl at trying it out, if elements has the tools.

OnlyWantsOne · 18/06/2011 21:21

Well you should be able to do the second tutorial with elements. I hope!!

Just been looking at your link - wallet looks brilliant, and your other projects too BTW. Wish I could make stuff like that. How do you applique the letters on the baby blanket, do you use an ordinary sewing machine or do you need something special?

OnlyWantsOne · 18/06/2011 22:24

Oh thank you - please please comment on the blog, it would make my day!!

OP posts:
Tangle · 18/06/2011 23:43

I'm not sure I'd buy one (at least not in those colours - I know you've already commented on them!) but £15 seems like a fair price to me :)

The only thing I wondered while looking at it was whether it would look neater with a concealed zip in? You've finished them really nicely and I'm not trying to say they don't look good, I just thought it might a way to make them even better (although I don't have much of a clue of whether it would take longer to put in or cost more in materials to do - either of which would make it a not very good idea Blush)

been having a nose around your blog and everything looks so lovely - I'm hoping I can find some inspiration to do some more sewing. How long would you say it takes you to make the birds? I found a freebie pattern that looks remarkably similar but haven't got round to doing anything with it yet...

queenmaeve · 19/06/2011 16:49

i would pay £15 pounds for that, especially if it was for a gift, its so hard to find something a bit different. well done op! Smile

OnlyWantsOne · 20/06/2011 07:30

Well yesterday I had another person ask - so now I better get making!!
