Crochet Amigurumi

I am really enjoying creating lots of different creatures for the dc at the moment and wondered if anyone else is making any at the moment?

Are there any knitters doing amigurumi?

I have mostly followed patterns but have attempted a couple of easy ones without patterns as I could not find one for what DD wanted! However, I am not very good at making a note of the stitches I have used so these are likely to be one off pieces.

If anyone has any tips for designing your own creatures I would love to hear them as there is one I want to make at the moment but I am struggling with how to translate a picture into crochet. I could go down the trial and error route but I am very impatient Grin

I have'nt progressed to proper safety eyes yet
i have just used felt or stitched eyes so far.

I am thinking of giving them ago. Is ebay a good place to get them?

Frank n Furter sounds fab! do you have any pictures of your makes?

I have recently done sonic and tails for DD. I need to finish mike from monsters inc for DS and add eyes to a raving rabbid for DD.

Dh wants the alien from American Dad, can't find a pattern so need to make one up

I did'nt think to look on ravelry for a MN group!

DD loves the rabbid. I am in the process of making a selection of different eyes and mouths that can be changed and attached with velcro. DD is adding to the list of required outfits for the rabbid daily and I even made a crochet plunger last night Grin

Hi, hope you don't mind but I joined the Ravelry group from this thread Blush. I am quite new to crochet but love it.

The amigurumi things are lovely, I bought a good book from Amazon with a few to make.

frazzledblob · 26/04/2011 22:07

I have signed up on the ravelry group. It has prompted me to start updating my projects, hope you don't mind me bombarding your group with them? Blush

StayFr0sty I am loving the dinosaurs :) DS has a birthday coming up and they have inspired me to make some for him.

SpotsMumSally which book did you get? I am a craft book addict Grin

This one frazzled.

I also bought this one too, I can't wait to make a few bits for the children from it.

ilythia · 26/04/2011 23:00

I love amigurumi, I make up stuff a lot, I find the easiest way to do it is to break everything down to tubes, ovals or circles, and then make loads. Make take a bit longer but it tends to work!
Recently have made a crochet giraffe for a friend and kwazii for dd1Smile

snap Grin I have both of those books.

The knitting book looks good too. Do you knit aswell StayFr0sty? I only ever learnt to knit the very basic stitches as a child and have taken to crochet more but I wonder if its worth giving knitting another go?

i am part way through a dinosaur for DS and an octopus for my nephew and my sister now wants a rabbid! I am going to be very busy this bank holiday weekend!

ilythia thanks for tips. I have now added giraffe to my list aswell :)

Any other good books you recommend then frazzled? Grin

I'll look out for that book too frosty.

frazzledblob · 29/04/2011 19:21

the first book I had was Super Cute Crochet here

I have ordered this one today here I am loving the bunny on the front cover!

I have finished a baby dragon for DS today. DD now wants one but I need to do something different as I get bored far too easily Blush

Are you working on any projects at the moment Spots ?

SpotsMumSally · 30/04/2011 10:10

Thanks frazzled. I ordered the one that you ordered today and have the super cute one on wishlist.

I'm just working on hexagonal pieces, I'm going to make them into a blanket for my sister.

frazzledblob · 30/04/2011 10:23

I like hexagons, just finished a tortoise floor cushion using lots of hexagons :)

have you seen the attic24 blog? here Fantastic use of colour.

I am going to try and squeeze a Hobbycraft visit in today (DH & DC permitting!) I really want to try out some of the proper eyes on the amigurumi and I am too impatient to wait for an online order Blush

I started a baby snow bunny yesterday and I am hoping to do some dinos later. Next on my list is to think of something for fathers day.

I'd love to join the Ravelry group, I love all things crochet and have made some amigurumi. Would someone kindly link me to the the group as i've had a quick look and can't find it. :)

frazzledblob · 30/04/2011 18:23

here

hope its ok to link it?

did'nt get my eyes today :(

Narketta have you got any favourite crochet or amigurumi patterns? Grin

OP posts:
Narketta · 30/04/2011 19:28

Thanks Frazzled. I am absolutely useless at following patterns but if I see any amigurumi that I like i'm quite good at making them up from memory.

Are you on facebook? I joined an amigurumi group and I have to look at it every few days for new ideas. I will try and come back with a link in a mo :)

Narketta · 30/04/2011 19:31

Here is the facebook Amigurumi group :)

Narketta · 30/04/2011 19:33

I also love this Lionbrand site for ideas , they have some really good beginner patterns that even I can follow.

frazzledblob · 30/04/2011 19:53

OMG thanks for the facebook link, I can never complain about having a lack of inspiration ever again :)

I have started trawling the lionbrand site for ideas aswell.

There's so little time and so much to make Grin

I love that attic 24 blog, she is fab. I am making some of the teeny tiny flowers at the moment to sew on a dress to cover a repair. What are the proper eyes for the amigurumi? How did the tortoise turn out?

Narketta, thanks for the links, loads of patterns!

Narketta · 30/04/2011 20:12

I love the Attic 24 blog too, I dream of creating beautiful thing that she doesEnvy

Narketta · 30/04/2011 20:16

"I dream of creating beautiful things like she does"

So tired I can't spell!! Blush

SpotsMumSally · 02/05/2011 09:21

I tried to make my first Amigurumi animal from a pattern on the internet, somehow it has a huge hole in between it's legs. Not entirely sure what happened but hey ho. Not attic24 worthy any way!

frazzledblob · 02/05/2011 10:38

spots some of my first attempts went a bit wrong, got my stitches confused and ended up with a monster and not the intended pony for DD Blush
If its just the one hole then its fixable Grin With regard to holes in general I find it helps to use a smaller hook than the pattern / yarn calls for.

Which pattern did you do? I really liked the baby snow dragon I did for DS and I am doing a Baby Triceratops for him now which is quite simple but effective. Can post links if you want them?

I finally have some eyes! They were 3for2 in Hobbycraft so I have some black small and large safety eyes and some sew on googly eyes.

The tortoise is lovely. Will stick a piccy up soon. I really liked doing the hexagons, they were in three different colours so it keeps you interested. Only downside is weaving all the ends in!
