Hi all thought I would start a thread to see if there were any fellow photographers out there.

I have just stepped into the world of the dslr camera. I have got a cannon eos 550d. My dp hs just bought himself a second hand canon eos 350d as he is getting hooked aswell.

We are both very much beginners luckily a good friend is a pro photographer so teaching us loads and I have loads of time on my hands as can't look for a job till at least next Jan due to an operation I had.

If anyone else wants to talk photography then please comment on here and we can all share a mutual interest. Smile

i only have the 2 lenses at the mo and have taken a few pics - i'm off to a sculpture park tomorrow so will take lots then and then the seaside for the weekend. Think the big zoom lens is waiting for me at the post office. A the moment i'm just a little bit apprehensive. I need to read up on using the camera more and also just having a go.

I currently have no filters what would people recommend and why do i need them?

tjacksonpfc · 14/04/2011 16:01

Hi Katz ive got uv filters on all of my lens for protection if nothing else it stops the lens getting scratched which helps. Theres loads of diffrent filters you can get my advice is get them on ebay they are a couple of quid there rather than £30-£40 in jessops.

I have a UV filter on my Canon lens. As already said, if nothing else it protects the lens. Infact I must get one bought for my other lens too.

moogyboobles · 11/05/2011 17:48

I'm not a fan of UV filters, I love shooting into the sun and a bit of glare and the filter doesn't quite get the effect I'm after. I am well insured though!

Hi everyone, good to see a thread with Mums being creative.
Wondering if anyone here is a qualified photographer, as I would like some input on credibility, if that makes sense!

I've been a keen amateur for many, many years and have been getting more work in the last 2 years, due to my composition style. But feel shaky as I don't have qualifications, although I aim to start a course with the OCA in Sept, which can lead to a degree.

Hope to chat with someone in the know!

LollipopViolet · 09/07/2011 19:36

I have a Sony A200 and a Nikon D5100. I used to shoot a lot of ice hockey but my friend who is an official club photographer has said our rink is probably changing the rules so only official photographers can take cameras in :(

So I'm a photographer with nothing to shoot really :(

Never won a competition or even had a photo accepted for one :(

RetroMama71 · 09/07/2011 19:44

Hi Lollipop,
But what else do you like to photograph, and how would you go about getting "official" status? And your friend did only say "probably".
Do you have an online folio of your work/planning to do more with photography career-wise?

LollipopViolet · 09/07/2011 19:51

I want to turn it into my career Retro.

I like photographing the sky: sunsets, clouds etc. I also like taking shots of buildings and animals. I'd like to learn portrait photography so that I could do that as a job.

Official status - my friend was invited by the club, so that's how it works I think.

I am hoping to use my skills as a volunteer for my local steam railway, and I have a Flickr page: www.flickr.com/photos/45456370@N02/

I've been following the advice of my friend and taking my camera to as many places as I can.

Cheburashka · 13/07/2011 13:06

Hello everyone! It's great to find a thread about photography here! I'm very much a beginner but I'm so keen to learn as much as possible about photography. I have recently bought a Nikon 3100 (only 1 set of lenses so far...). I'll keep following this thread! :) here's my flickr www.flickr.com/photos/sonyapetkova/

hissingsid · 18/07/2011 10:51

Hi

I am new here and I love photography.

I was a wedding photographer for about five years but gave it up as the business side of things spoilt the fun the the photography.

I now have my hobby back and I am loving it all over again.

I have Nikon dslr and a few lens................etc.

I would be pleased for this thread to take off and we can all help each other out.

I have a website that I made myself [one of the free ones] it is very easy to set up if anyone is interested is seeing it, I could post a link on here. [I think lol]

Pigleychez · 05/08/2011 22:58

Oh, great to see a photography thread.

Its been a hobby of mine for a while but its only the past few years (since the girls were born) that ive developed more of a passion. I have a Cannon 500D with 3 lenses. The normal kit lens, a 50mm Portrait lens and a telephoto zoom lense.

Most of my pics are of my girls but also do some for friends and family. Nothing professional, they usually just give me something (gift voucher or something) for my time in the editing etc. I'd love for it to become a proper business.
Ive recently been looking into hiring a studio to learn about that side of things too.

Had a fab afternoon today in the woods with the girls actually, snapping away at them. Im actually quite pleased with them :)
Pics on my profile if anyones interested.

LollipopViolet · 01/09/2011 23:31

Sorry to drag up the thread, but I have news!

I'm doing some voluntary photography tomorrow night, at a local variety fundraiser, and I'm also donating an album of the pictures as an auction item. i'm going to have it so that I can send the winner the photos through a Flickr link, then they can select the shots they want in their album, which I'm hoping to get signed by all the performers tomorrow for that extra sentimental value.

I'm coveting a new lens for my Nikon though, got a 70-300mm for my Sony, so that's my "long distance" camera, but want some fast glass, a 1.8 would be brilliant. I have a 2.8 Helios lens and adapters for both cameras but it's fully manual and I'm not confident in using it yet.

I also want/need a big old camera backpack for all the kit!

Looking at a 1.8 lens in Jessops that's £169, fully automatic, lovely thing. But really have no money at the minute :(

I'm also starting to sort out the business side of things. Well, preparing to START a business after uni actually, getting a portfolio, doing freebie work so that I build said portfolio and a client base, learning portrait photography thanks to my lovely friend R, the photographer I mentioned before, saving money to hopefully open a studio...

I have a Sony a200 and Nikon D5100 for those interested :)

Hi Lollipop

Ray Lowe does business start up courses

He is one of the top photographers in the country. My ds just did his work experience at his highstreet studio which is now owned by his daughter. Ray Lowe came into his school and gave a talk as well as looking over ds's portfolio.

DS had a brilliant time at the studio and came home with some lovely portraits of himself which he was allowed to photoshop.

Siikibam · 09/01/2012 23:27

Bump! I guess everyone is busy with everyday life but it would be nice to see this thread going again.
I got myself a 50mm lens before Christmas and I LOVE it!!!! I'm now looking at extension tubes as a cheap alternative to a dedicated macro lens.
What's everyone up to? Lollipop how did your voluntary night go?

lisad123 · 09/01/2012 23:29

I love my camera Grin
I have a few pics on my profile I'm quite proud of Blush

Whoops, sorry everyone for breaking a rule, no harm intended.
Thanks for letting me know.

DonkeyTeapot · 03/04/2012 22:44

Evening all :) I'm hoping you lovely lot can give me some advice, if that's ok?

I've been using a Fuji Finepix F11 (compact) for a while now, bought it in 2006 but it still takes a great picture, despite being a lower pixel count than a lot of phones now. I mostly use the auto settings, and am just starting learning about the settings and what everything means.

After a couple of years of thinking about it but being skint, I've decided to finally bite the bullet and get a DSLR camera, and am wondering which one would be best for my needs. I know Canon and Nikon are well known and respected brands, so I guess it'll be one of these, but I don't know what model to go for, or if there are any particular features I should be looking for.

I'm currently in a position to spend a bit of money on something decent, and this is unlikely to be the case again, so I'd like to get one that I won't "outgrow" too quickly, if that makes sense. One that I can continue to get plenty of use out of as I get better.

Thank you! (When I've got a proper camera can I join your gang please?)

DonkeyTeapot · 05/04/2012 22:20

After reading a few reviews, and noting people's comments on this thread, I've decided on the Canon EOS 550D.

I've got a couple of books to help me learn the terminology, but really I can't wait to just go out and get started! Once my camera arrives, that is...

Siikibam · 06/04/2012 21:30

Donkey, I can't answer as I don't know much about cameras! Looking forward to seeing your pics :)
