Hi all thought I would start a thread to see if there were any fellow photographers out there.

I have just stepped into the world of the dslr camera. I have got a cannon eos 550d. My dp hs just bought himself a second hand canon eos 350d as he is getting hooked aswell.

We are both very much beginners luckily a good friend is a pro photographer so teaching us loads and I have loads of time on my hands as can't look for a job till at least next Jan due to an operation I had.

If anyone else wants to talk photography then please comment on here and we can all share a mutual interest. Smile

katz - you need a single length Macro lens (for flowers and stuff)(i've got a 90mm)
and a zoom (70-200mm, or something similar) (for birds, trees, the moon etc)

tjacksonpfc · 04/04/2011 16:31

Hi katz welcome to the thread, i'e got the cannon 550d. I would recomend the tamaron 75-300mm one. i got it with my camera it has a built in macro system, where by you can set the lense to macro. With the close up function on your camera and the macro feature on the lens your pics are as good as if you were using a 50mm macro specific lens.

The other advantage is you also have a good zoom lens so only need to carry the one lens. they are currently reatailing for £99 in jessops hth Smile

I think the reason I like the macro is because "what you see is what you get"
Plus, mine is quite a long focal length, which means I can get closer than with my 18-55mm lens.
I do normally use the 18-55, because it's the most versatile (and like tjack says, you only need to carry the one!)

katz · 04/04/2011 16:47

Tj - could you link to the tamron one please? I'm about to buy the camera was going to wait until Easter but want it now!!!! Could order extra lens too. Need recommendations for an inexpensive tripod too. I never spend money on myself and DH had said go for it so I am!!!

tjacksonpfc · 04/04/2011 17:03

Hi katz sorry ive tried to do link and it wont work if you go to jessops.com website then click on lens then click on tamaron on the left hand side it is the first lens you come to here is the right up on it.

Tamron 70-300mm f4/5.6 DI LD Macro (Canon AF)
?Zoom lens
?70-300mm
?Auto Focus
?Canon AF
?62mm Filter Size

Its a great lens and easy to use hth Smile

If you go to jessops dp has just reminded me that they are doing the 500d on special deal at mo where they will throw the tamaron lens in with the 18-55mm one aswell for £499. that also includes camera bag and some filters and other bits and bobs in i got the deal there for my 550d.

As for tripods have a look on ebay personally i have one which i got with a digital camera magazine subscripton which has a ball head on teh top of it and i hate it. the camera doesn't feel secure on it as you still have to hold it in place. So I am going to be buying one with a rigid head very soon. hth

TJ - is that in store only, the online deal was for £599 for the 500d plus 2 lenses.

tjacksonpfc · 04/04/2011 17:13

sorry katz the deal ive just told you about is for the nikon 500 that will teach me to try and do things like this with the dcs around Blush

tjacksonpfc · 04/04/2011 17:13

nickelbabyhatcher that is true. I did think maybe I should change it to a 52 challenge and do one a week, but haven't even done that lol.

katz · 05/04/2011 18:59

ok photography types please confirm that what i'm planning on buying is a good combo!

this camera

this zoom lens

and this macro lens

thanks!

Siikibam · 05/04/2011 19:43

Katz, I don't know much but are you able to get a lens that has macro on it? Could save you a little.....wait and see what others say though, that's just my very basic opinion :)

tjacksonpfc · 05/04/2011 21:18

Hi Katz my dp has the 55-200mm lens but he prefers my 75-300mm with built in macro thats on his 350d. At the end of the day its all down to personal preference but like i sadi yesterday. what i like about the tamaron lens that i told you about yesterday was its a good long zoom lens with built in macro so best of both worlds and only the one lens. Smile

katz · 05/04/2011 22:24

i've gone for what i've listed above, except ordered through Jessops not pixmainia. I figured i'll be doing a fair bit with hula and thought having different lenses would be good. We'll see how i go. very excited now!!!

Hulababy · 05/04/2011 22:29

Yeah Grin

Once it arrive we need a day out snapping, and need to find a course too.

tabbycats · 05/04/2011 22:43

I've got a canon 550d (waves to tjackson). I love it.

4 lenses - canon 15-85mm

tamron 70-300mm vc

tamron 90mm macro

canon 50mm 1.4.

I mostly take the kids, pets, macro. never managed a decent landscape photo yet.

Does anyone use flickr?

Siikibam · 06/04/2011 09:10

Yay katz :))

tabbycats I have flickr for my jewellery (not up to date!) not put any photography pics there though.

bruffin · 06/04/2011 09:25

Have you looked at ephotozine Both DH and DS have put their photos on there.

All the family are keen photographers . DH has a Nikon D80 and DS 15 has a Nikon D3000 and DD 13 is very keen and pinches their cameras.

DS will be doing his work experience at the photographers round the corner in July. The photographer is one of the top professionals in the country and has already come into the school and gave the class a talk, so hopefully ds will get a lot out of it.

Hulababy · 06/04/2011 10:23

Not used the site - is it a specific site for photography or anything?

bruffin · 06/04/2011 11:12

Yes- Lots of information and also forums and you can also upload photos in the galleries for feedback etc

tjacksonpfc · 07/04/2011 20:09

its arrived! well most of it, just waiting for the zoom lens from amazon. Hula and I had a bit of play in the park but the daffodils were blowing in the wind a bit much. I have sooo much to learn - can't wait!
