How do you know how to sell your paintings and also how to price the painting?

I have almost finished a painting I would like to sell, does anyone know the best way to go about selling it? How I would price it etc?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Curiousmama I do not varnish them. Personally I think it is unnecessary...I find acrylic paint by nature hard wearing and resilient (it is after all just plastic), it will cause no problems to wipe a painting with a damp cloth and then let it dry if you need to clean. I have tried varnishes, the mat ones left the painting a but dull and too flat looking and the gloss/semi gloss ones were too shiny for my liking. Varnish is also terrible for getting bits of fluff/dust in which are noticeable as it is transparent, so I just don't do it Grin

I used to try to hurry along the drying process buy putting them outside in the sun, then had light bulb moment about the hair dryer! I have not produced a painting that has not been blow dried at some point since! Grin

Thanks blizzard, I don't varnish mine glad I'm in good company Wink Do you have a website so we can see your pics? I only have mine of facebook at the moment.

We use the hairdrier in our art group, very useful.

Curiousmama · 27/02/2011 20:41

I've put a couple of my pics on here [brave emoticon] Wink Second one is in acrylics, my description didn't save for some reason?

LoveMyGirls · 27/02/2011 21:41

I brought some gloss spray today, glad I didn't use it now! Have been and spent my hobbycraft vouchers I had for xmas, got a couple of brushes, a brush holder thing and more papers for my wet palette. Wish I'd brought some white paint now though as I've almost ran out, not far off finishing my next painting think I've saved the fluff situation!

I use a hair dryer too, very effective, managed to get paint on it today, whoops!

Acrylic is gard wearing if you look at the pic of my wall (on profile) with the characters, that has taken a bashing with the kids playing next to it but still looks fine, prob the off mark here and there but it is at their level so I was expecting that.

I wanted DH to put some hooks up for me this weekend to put my paintings on, will ask again tomorrow or just do it myself, although I'm wary with hammering nails since the time I flooded my first house by nailing a hole in a water pipe Hmm

Just looked at your pics Curious - very nice! What are water colours like to work with? I think I must have used them as a child but haven't used them in my adult life yet.

Glad to hear you've sorted your painting out Smile
I find watercolours very unforgiving but am going to persevere. A lot of people love them. I like the fact that when I use acrylics I can go over any mistakes bits I'm not sure of Wink

cheesesarnie · 28/02/2011 11:21

imo watercolours take a bit of getting used too.i prefer acrylics or oils but then the whole point for me is too play around with different medias.

you asked questions-i usually go for figures(not portraits) or still life.smallest are around £80 mark.i get a friend to do the framing!(i cheat).and although id love to do it full time, sadly i dont!i used to never be without my brushes!i have very arty children who like to join in,which is fun when theyre doing theyre own canvas but not when they want to help with mine!Grin
your fairy is lovely!

LoveMyGirls · 01/03/2011 08:01

Her Cheese, thanks for answering my questions Smile My dc's like to join in too so I buy them their own canvasses Grin Do you think you will ever get to do it full time?

What can you do if a frame is warped?

It's lovely Smile Thanks for showing us it. At least you have a picture of it. Did you feel a pang letting it go? A friend wanted one of mine and as it was one of my first watercolours I couldn't give her it. I still owe her one Blush I have 3 to do for people must get one with it.

Well done and good luck with all your future creations Smile

LoveMyGirls · 03/03/2011 22:43

I take pics of them as I go along, I haven't let it go yet, it's going on saturday, I don't mind, it means there is room for new ones! In a way I'd liek to fast forward time a bit so I was more experienced and my creations were better iyswim, NOT that I want to wish my life away!

The time has come to buy more canvases, can you please help me decide on which ones to buy please?

I'm thinking of spending at least £30 for at least 6, don't mind too much on size, I want something that will sell well and that is good quality. Also don't want it too big so it takes ages for me to finish it, I've got some time off work in April and ideally would like to complete a painting every day or other day so I can get more stock for my shop.

Any help is very much appreciated.
