I have seen in our local paper an ad for a local small craft fair next month not too far away. Its £15 a stall & I am just working out if I have enough confidence (& cards !) to give it a go. Has anyone done anything like this, how much did it cost v how much did you sell ?

It's all a bit scary !

Whizzz · 14/10/2005 22:35

Thanks ! I'll see how much 'stock' I can produce. Like the display things JM - ever the true professional !

Whizz... they are fab and the prices JM suggests sound really reasonable to me. The silver bracelet is gorgeous!

Are 'thongs' readily available? Is it like a roll of string that you cut the length you need from?

Whizzz · 16/10/2005 13:08

Well these bits were part of a set I got & I wasn't sure what to describe them as. You can get thonging on a roll but these were individual pieces - one piece was enought for 2 ~16" necklaces. I was trying to work out what they were made of - seems to be very thin suede stuff (hope no one asks me directly, I'll seem like a right novice - which I am really !)

ta... I want to look into this jewellery making, one day!

champs · 16/10/2005 15:21

whizzz!! i loooove that bracelet can you do it exactly the same types of beads in pink???

right, back to the question: i think JM's pricing is good. as long as you factor in labour, materials etc and still make a profit.

the earings with the translucent glass beads are really pretty.

There is a good profit margin in jewellery as the B&P's are so cheap. Whizz you need to work out how long each piece takes you to make and how much the cost was to you. I aim for £10 per hour for my labour. If a necklac takes me two hours to make.....I dont bother making one again unless its a special order and the customer is prepared to pay!

Jayzmummy · 16/10/2005 16:04

Forgot to add that the thong you have used is suede!
You can get leather thongs and nylon thongs from most decent fabric shops.....I get it trade price at aroud 40p for an 18 inch necklace.

[all this talk of leather thongs on a sunday after noon...my! my! we sound like a bunch of norty girls!]

Whizzz · 16/10/2005 18:24

Champs I could do you one in pink but I will have to get some more bracelets. I will email you if you like.
I only got 1 to see how it worked out & am I quite pleased with it so think I will do some more.

Thanks all for your comments

Whizzzz and jazzymummy - fwiw, I have a friend (and talented artist) who makes jewellery from beads and buttons and here in Kent she can get £35+ for a necklace made to order. She markets through word of mouth mainly to Yummy Mummies but has now had a gallery accept some pieces.

Whizzz · 16/10/2005 20:15

Wow !
(don't worry Champs, I won't charge you that much )
The whole thing that got me wanting to do this was the fact that I bought a lovely silver bracelet when on hols with beautiful purple glass beads & silver charms on. I paid £20 for it. I then wondered could I do something similar in a different colour & how easy was it to find the various bits & bobs to make it.
Helps me fulfill my creative side !

Callmemadam.....the secret is to sus the customer first....if they look "loaded"...the price rockets
A freind of mine took some of my jewellery to show a friend of hers (who is a "Yummy") and when she came back she had sold three of my necklaces to her for £35!!!
I normally sell them for £5-6 each!!!!
