The A&C slattern list, revisited

I remember a thread a while ago about what people were making either at the time or like me, have a bit of a list!
Just rather nosily wondered how we were all getting on?

Current:
I'm in the middle of making my second draught excluder for the back door. Just really need to crack on and fill it and sew it up.

To Do:
make my padded noticeboard- need supplies and to finally choose a fabric!

make DP's scrabble tile message Birthday present. Need supplies and advice.

Decide what to do with a few squares of knitting I've done. I'm crap at knitting so no idea what to do.

Your turn :)

Ooh and if Overmydeadbody reads this, I'm getting a sewing machine! I am so very excited and no one else cares :(

Right-

Currently working on a quilt for a new baby with elephants on it holding thistles and daffodils (Scottish/Welsh baby!)

To Do:

Another quilt with dog, strawberry and tractor on it (see my other fabric hunting thread) which is giving me a headache

6 fabric Advent calendars with felt decorations (did these for a fair last year and have commissions)

Baby gifts galore, everyone seems to be having babies and I want to make a sort of round playmat that gathers up into a pouch for the toys in it IYSWIM? It's just an idea at the moment...

I want to make myself a maternity skirt but by the time I get round to making it I will probably no longer be pregnant!

Oh and now I want to make a fabric memo board too!

Niecie · 04/02/2011 20:47

Oh yes, I remember that thread. I was wondering how people were getting on too!

I have come a bit of a grinding halt in the last couple of weeks. I knitted a short sleeve cardie in a week for myself and am still in a state of shock! I am particularly pleased with the sewing up as I used mattress stitch for the first time and is so neat!!

I have oodles of yarn and fabric and I don't know what to do with it all. I think my priorities, for today at least are

  • finish a jumper for DS1 which I started a year ago. Hopefully it will still fit!
  • Do something with one of my two jelly rolls.
  • Make a jumper for DS2 which I have the wool for.
  • learn to knit socks and stop buying books about it!
  • make DS2 a camera pouch and an MP3 player pouch and probably an MP3 player pouch for DS1 as well.
  • Makes some cushions for our sitting room. Ours are getting old and shabby and are a bit dull and I keep seeing lovely appliqued cushions I fancy.
  • finish my granny stripes blanket. I am about a 3rd of the way through I suppose.

I think that is enough to be getting on with!

coldcomfortHeart · 04/02/2011 21:18

Oh and these for a friend!

Learning to knit is always on my list Niecie but it never happens... I saw a beautiful book on fair isle knitting the other day but really must learn to walk before I can perform wool-related acrobatics in the round...

kellestar · 04/02/2011 21:22

I am working on

Bea's Cot Blanket, 300 crocheted flower squares all done and 1/2 are edged.

Bea's fabric scraps bunting, went around MiL's to raid her stash.

I'd like to make a crocheted item of clothing for Bea, but she's so long and thin, everything is a bit too odd sized, hoping to find some inspiration with a visit to LYS next week.

Niecie · 04/02/2011 21:32

Oh now, don't be putting links in Coldcomfortheart, that just isn't fair!!Angry

Those napkins are lovely - the colours are just great. But I don't need anything else on my list. Grin

And I wouldn't mind but we don't even use napkins!

Niecie · 04/02/2011 21:36

And the stupid thing is that I can do knitting in the round and fair isle so socks should be easy but no, I have a mental block.

Can you crochet coldcomfort? It seems if you can either knit or crochet and have been doing so for a while, it is really difficult to learn the other woolly craft. I struggled with crochet for ages but have finally managed it in the last couple of years despite having knitted since I was a child. I've seen people on here who can crochet but can't knit. I wonder why that is?

coldcomfortHeart · 05/02/2011 08:41

I can't crochet either- I have heard of this weird one-or-the-other thing too and think that may be, superstitiously, why I haven't tried crocheting- I want to be a knitter! I need to find a class really but my local haberdashery/craft shop just does very advanced knitting workshops at the moment for super-proficient North Eastern grannies...

Napkins are sweet aren't they!

overmydeadbody · 05/02/2011 08:55

pipplin you're getting a sewing machine!!! Smile

That is great news, now you can follow my tutorials!

overmydeadbody · 05/02/2011 09:02

Right, I have too many things I want to make to mention, so here's my list for this weekend:

Make a new messenger bag for myself

Make some snack bags for packed lunches, lining them with clear vinyl (from a shower curtain I bought in Habitat in the sale for £3!)

Re-upholster DS's swivel chair

Popplin I am so excited, again, that you have a sewing machine. Anything you need to know, give me a shout. I think I'll write some easy tutorials on my blog for things like inserting zips and stuff...

Does this mean I don't have to try to find sewing projects you can do by hand?

Niecie · 05/02/2011 10:29

pipplin - a sewing machine will be great. That is a whole new list of things to do you can add to this list. Grin

Have fun.

pipplin · 05/02/2011 12:32

Oh you are lovely OVMDB!
I would ahem need some easy tutorials please :)
I am so glad other people are excited with me. Unfortunately in R.L this is deemed rather dull.

New cushion covers and bunting here I come Niecie! Its a good job I'm going back to work for a short period of time before my Mat. leave kicks in again. I have things to make Grin

OP posts:
overmydeadbody · 05/02/2011 13:29

Ooh yes, cushion covers and bunting are great projects to start with! I recommend some mini bunting too, it is sooo cute.

I have just made a snack bag, three more to go! Think I will call them snack sacks Grin. They are definately very simple things to make so will write a tutorial up tonight for them for you pipp.

coldcomfortHeart · 05/02/2011 13:41

That is a lot for one weekend overmydeadbody
Will be lucky if I finish sewing some patches to the edge of my quilt top!

I too would like zip etc tutorials please!

Dingle · 05/02/2011 14:08

Hi everyone, I desperately need not just crafty inspiration but a kick up the backside in general.

I had a bit of a health scare last Autumn and haven't really crafted since. I did make a batch of Christmas cards but since xmas all I have made is two cards and I haven't blogged any of them.

I do have a baby card to make this weekend and I have been looking online for some knitting inspiration. Problem is I have some chunky wool but not found a pattern I like for it, I have found a nice aran pattern but cannot find the wool I have,,,,erm,,,tidied away somewhere! LOL

I will watch this thread...thank you.x

frazzledblob · 05/02/2011 20:26

Can I join in?

I have just sorted out a craft 'corner' as there is no space for a craft room. However, all I have done so far is move stuff about, no actual crafting has taken place Blush

Crochet projects to finish:
Sonic the hedgehog & tails for DD
Jack Skellington & zero for DD
Mike wazowski for DS

(I am stuck in a toy making phase crochet wise.)

I have loads of jewellery projects to get on with and I have'nt even got started on the sewing machine yet Blush Blush I have loads of lovely socks and so far only made two sock monkeys.

I think I also fit into the one or other thing with crochet and knitting. I have really taken to crochet but could never really get on with knitting. I built up a lovely collection of needles to motivate me to learn to knit but it's never 'stuck'

pipplin · 06/02/2011 09:20

That sounds great OVMDB. Would be really interested to see how you did your vinyl lining.
Now I have a new project, a quick easy one. I've seen in Cath Kidston's window a pink paper heart garland. I honestly don't see why I could not make my own in the same way you would make paper dollies. I'm doing SIL an afternoon tea for her birthday in a fortnight. I thought a cute pink high tea would be nice.

OP posts:
overmydeadbody · 06/02/2011 09:52

Ok, well only one day of the weekend left and al I've done is made four snack sacks, I am always too over ambitious with what I want to achieve in these two short days!

Photos of the snack sacks, as well as a step by step tutorial for making your own, can be found on my blog, here.

Will try to do some simple tutorials for zips etc. this week.

Good luck everyone with your crafting!

overmydeadbody · 06/02/2011 10:00

Pipplin a pink heart garland would be lovely. You could definately make it out of paper.

If you don't have paper long enough you can just sew paper hearts together, like this. Obviously you don't need a heart punch!

Or you could try it Martha's way.

Or, if you have lots of time on your hands, you could make these hearts.

overmydeadbody · 06/02/2011 10:03

Or if you don't have your sewing machine yet, you could use a hole punch to make holes in the hearts and string them together on ribbon, like this

SoupDragon · 06/02/2011 10:05

I am currently sulking because my sewing machine jammed whilst sewing a sparkly bag out of a sequinned child's skirt from Primark (£2 - bargain! Just need to sew along the bottom and add straps. But can't [wail])

I've tried to fix it but I think I need to take it to be serviced :(

SoupDragon · 06/02/2011 10:08

Have a look at these snack sacks which don't use velcro. They're like little pillow cases. They may be quicker :o

overmydeadbody · 06/02/2011 11:20

Oh no SoupDragon, that is bad news! I hate it when my sewing machine jams up or packs up. Hope you get it fixed!

I think DS needs the velcro, they way he swings his lunchbox around [grin

overmydeadbody · 06/02/2011 11:21

Ooh I like those actually, think I will adapt the instructions so they are lined and make some.

SoupDragon · 06/02/2011 12:04

I'll have another attempt aat taking it apart and fixing it - I am certain it isn't major and it wasn't an expensive machine so i"m reluctant to fork out for a service.

Have you made those sandwich wrap things? They wrap round your sandwiches instead of a plastic bag and then unfold into a placemat. I bought one and then used it as a pattern to make a Hello Kitty one for DD.
