CVS

Hello,

Just wondering if anyone has had a CVS after having a miscarriage because of chromosome abnormality?

Bit of background: DD 2.5 with no problems. We then went on to have 3 back to back miscarriages with last foetus testing positive for T16 (the previous two weren't tested as they were natural).

Currently 10 weeks pregnant and under the care of EPU and had a positive scan last weekend. I have received a letter with a date for a CVS at 11 weeks 4 days because of previous T16.

I think I am going to have it done because I would rather know sooner rather than later if there is an abnormality but I'm feeling incredibly anxious especially regarding the miscarriage risk.

Just wondering if anyone could share their CVS experiences?

Thank you 💐

I have had 2 CVS's, for 2 pregnancies for a hereditary condition.

I think they quote a 0.5% miscarriage risk for CVS tests, but have you looked for the stat for the hospital you are going to? My hospitals' miscarriage % was much lower than the national average.

The CVS tests were fine - albeit a strange and uncomfortable sensation! I kept my eyes closed the whole time though, I didn't fancy seeing the needle. The area felt quite bruised for a few days after ward which is normal too - just unfortunate that it was exactly where the waist band of my trousers sat!

Hope you get a good result and baby is OK x

Thank you for your reply @pebbles3004 I hope everything worked out for you in both pregnancy's.

How did you find the hospitals miscarriage %? I can't seem to find any information on this online x

My genetic counsellor who booked us in for the appt told us - the hospital will know so you should be able to just ask them?

I had one healthy pregnancy and unfortunately one unviable pregnancy 💔 life is cruel sometimes isn't it. Wishing you the best for your results x

Hi,

Sorry you have to go through that! I am also pregnant and need to have CVS. My youngest son passed at 2 years old with a genetic disease. I feel very nervous about the needle going in stomach but the genetic counsellor I seen last week said my local hospital miscarriage rate is 0.5 %. Fingers crossed for you! Hope all goes well 🤗

Heya.

We had to have CVS as fluid was really high. Turned out after baby had pataus. And then after I was a carrier for it. It's not hugely pleasant. But at least you will know what's going on. Hugs x

MummyBearBoo · 13/02/2023 23:02

I've had CVS 4 times now - 1st & 4th were my healthy babies -girls -and I felt ok after these -2nd and 3rd both boys and these babies that were found to have chromosomal abnormalities -i felt really sick after! There was no link between the gender and the abnormalities!

MummyBearBoo · 13/02/2023 23:03

Also I've also always made it passed week 13 in all 4 cases without miscarriage which is when they say any issue is not due to CVS! I had CVS at 11 weeks!

Hello everyone, just wondering if anyone is still around for a bit of info?♥️

My screening results came back this afternoon as high risk for Down's syndrome (1:49). They offered the blood test route or CVS, and I'm thinking I should just go straight for this option.

Would you recommend? I'm a bit distraught at the moment so any info or shared experience would mean the world xxx

pebbles3004 · 23/02/2023 20:06

@Rainbowmamma23 sorry you are in this position. Not sure how much I can help as I had a CVS for a different issue which a blood test wouldn't have diagnosed so wasn't offered it.

I've had 2 CVS's and yes the thought of them is daunting, but both have been absolutely fine. They numb the area with a local anaesthetic so it's not painful- just feels strange, almost as if you are being scratched on the inside. It is a bit uncomfortable but not painful. My husband has been with me holding my hand at both, and I closed my eyes for the whole of the procedure as I didn't want to see the needle - so don't feel like you need to look at anything!

Hope that helps. As I say my testing process was different so I can't comment on CVS vs. Blood test.

Wishing you luck x

Stargazer89 · 23/02/2023 20:16

Hi @Rainbowmamma23 just replied to you on our end of august group. I couldn't have CVS in the end because my placenta was in the wrong place my consultant also advised against it in my case because the risk of miscarriage was much higher than the risk of T16! x

Rainbowmamma23 · 23/02/2023 20:23

@pebbles3004 thank you so much, it's reassuring to hear about the procedure either way ♥️

@Stargazer89 thank you lovely. I shall check out that feed too ♥️

Samk79 · 23/02/2023 22:19

Rainbowmuma23
I had a risk of 1:104 for downs
Syndrome. I was referred for a cvs but they couldn't do it due to the position of my placenta. I had an amniocentesis done instead.
Thankfully my results were all fine

Rainbowmamma23 · 23/02/2023 22:25

@Samk79 was your placenta anterior or posterior?♥️ so glad that you got the all clear x

Samk79 · 23/02/2023 22:36

Rainbowmamma23 I had a posterior placenta. The consultant initially wanted me to wait another week for the amnio but I had geared myself up to having it done that day

Rainbowmamma23 · 23/02/2023 22:38

@Samk79 ah interesting! I've got anterior this time so maybe the position would be better suited for cvs? Fingers crossed anyway! Really appreciate you getting back to me so quickly x

Rainbowmamma23 · 23/02/2023 22:38

@Samk79 what were your hcg results?♥️

Samk79 · 24/02/2023 08:17

@Rainbowmamma23 I can't remember what my hcpc results were, I did expect to be higher risk as I was 40 when I was pregnant. I also went through the same when I was pregnant with my older son but I was only 28 then! Hope all goes smoothly for you, it's such a horrible thing to have to go through!

pebbles3004 · 24/02/2023 08:23

@Rainbowmamma23 FYI I am pretty sure the position of your placenta moves at this early stage of pregnancy. When I went for my first CVS I was sent home due to the position of it and told to come back a week later. The following week it had moved so they were able to carry out the CVS.

Rainbowmamma23 · 24/02/2023 08:24

@pebbles3004 oh wow! That's good to know, thank you x

MummyBearBoo · 24/02/2023 15:16

The first 3 times I had an anterior placenta with no issues the latest time it was posterior and again no issues I don't think it matters as long as they can reach it! Xx

Rainbowmamma23 · 26/02/2023 14:41

@MummyBearBoo thank you! I think I'm going to try the NIPT first after mulling it over throughout the weekend, and take it from there ♥️

Stargazer89 · 27/02/2023 17:25

@Rainbowmamma23 that sounds like a good plan. Hopefully you get an appointment date through soon.

OP posts:
Rainbowmamma23 · 27/02/2023 19:02

@Stargazer89 thank you so much for checking in ♥️ I have had an appointment today (with a scan too!). The scanogropher was so thorough and really went through everything with us too. She remeasured the NT and said it was 1.5mm, not the 3mm that it had been recorded at last Wednesday which gives me hope!

The NHS screening scan was really odd tbh. I've had a few this pregnancy because of a previous loss, so just wanted extra reassurance. In the 12 week one, the scanogropher really struggled to get a good picture of the baby, and only got one measurement of the NT (usually they like to take atleast three apparently). The whole thing was off idk.

Basically I'm feeling slightly more hopeful so I'm going to cling onto that until the results come in!♥️ apparently it will be 7-10 working days 😅 not sure if that starts from today or tomorrow! Haha xx

Stargazer89 · 27/02/2023 19:10

@Rainbowmamma23 that's brilliant news. I'm so pleased for you. I imagine your result wouldn't have been high risk with that NT number combined with bloods. Even though it's been stressful at least after this you will have extra peace of mind and can relax. I wish I had gone straight for NIPT this time. I'm actually thinking I'm going to pay to have it done so that I can try and relax. When I had my harmony test with DD I had the results back in 6 days even though they told me 7-10 days.

OP posts:
Rainbowmamma23 · 27/02/2023 19:13

@Stargazer89 oooh that's encouraging! I'd be over the moon with 6 😂 as it takes it to before the weekend, rather than having to wait the extra for the working days...

I had no idea about it with my first, but I would definitely do it again in the future if we were expecting 👌

Thank you so much for all of your info and support! I can't tell you how reassuring it is to be able to chat with someone who has been through it too ♥️
