Cystic hygroma

Today we had our screening scan at 13+4 and were told that our baby has a large (5.3mm) amount of fluid stretching from the base of his head to pretty much his tailbone. I can't make sense of it. After 5 miscarriages I stupidly thought I was out of the woods. The sonographer told us that as the fluid runs further than just the neck fold it's more likely to not have Down's syndrome but another anomoly such as Turners, Edwards etc.

I am booked in to have a CVS tomorrow afternoon and a more detailed scan with a consultant.

Has anyone has this before? Positive and not so positive outcomes? Google is telling me that most babies with this problem will die before birth and to be honest I am petrified.

Thank you everyone.

I hope you are OK BeyondHope
My son was born yesterday. Physically everything went fine. I was able to see him and spend some time with him. The hygroma was really visible but in my eyes he was perfect.
Apparently a karyotype cannot be done because it needs fresh cells - the baby had been dead for too long. So we will probably never know if there was a chromosomal abnormality.

Hi Burpees. I am so sorry to read about the loss of your son. There are simply no words. I am glad yesterday went as well as it could and you got to spend time with your son. I wasn't sure at first but the minute he was born I knew I wanted to hold him and I'm so glad we got that time with him.

Will they be able to do a post mortum or test the placenta? Take care of yourself. This is such a difficult time. I'm here to talk if you need to. Flowers

My NT at 12 weeks was 6.1mm! I was told it was a sign of chromosomla abnormality. and it was! i has CVS at 13 weeks which came out after 2 days as edwards syndrome (trisomy 18). I was devastated, even thought I felt the baby wouldn't survive after the 12 week scan bad news... we decided to terminate at 14 weeks - horrible decison to make but ww have a 7 y old son who did not know we were expectinig.. now I feel it was a 'fair' decision... hard to go through anyway
