Is this 'junk food'?

Laquitar · 04/07/2010 11:50

We had a party for dd's 5th birthday.
I had little sandwitches, mini pizzas, potato wedges, biscuits, cake.

Now being a mumsnetter i knew that some mums will be about the sweets. Fine i was prepared for that. But potato wedges? What is wrong with them? One mum said 'oh she always go for the junk food' when her dd ate the potato wedges first, the other moron said 'at least they eat it with hummus and it balances up, oh its ok once in a while' .

Funny thing is they were very happy with the olives (salt).

Do you call home made potato wedges 'junk food'? Potato, olive oil, oregano.

yanbu, olive oil and potatoes are both good foods, so no problem.

nikki1978 · 04/07/2010 19:53

You know you can actually ask them to not put msg on your chinese food. I have done this before and they are fine with it. I say I am allergic. There are some things like the BBQ sauce on spare ribs that it is already in but generally they just throw it on whatever they are cooking.

Ryoko, i mentioned 'homemade' for the reason 'Trillian' explained. (Thanks Trillian). And they knew it was homemade because i put oregano instead of paprika.

Titsalina. And least you could have a huge piece without worrying if it will be enough for everybody. I know i would...

Party sounds rather good, surely other mums just like to slag off the food / parents to make themselves feel better?

champagnesupernova - do you read the ingredients / levels on shop bought stuff?

I have to due to being celiac.

You'd be surprised at the crap people bung in a trolley without a thought.

Bog standard salt can be an issue for some people, I tend to use Himalayan salt in cooking as it's still got the good minerals in, hasn?t been polluted by the shit in the sea, isn't bleached and doesn't contain anti-caking agents etc.

MummyTo2MonkeysAnd1Bug · 05/07/2010 10:26

YANBU Its a party for crying out loud!

Bring on the cake and crisps!!!

As long as they are eating healthy balanced diets 99% of the time with plenty of fresh produce and fruit and veg etc, i dont see what the issue is with going the whole sugary salty hog for a party lol!!

I could just imagine my DDs and nephews faces if i served up crudites, rice cakes and fat free dips for a childs party

gorionine · 05/07/2010 10:29

The food you describe sounds pretty much standard birthday party food. Nothing wrong with it.

Next time just offer apples and cucumber slices and wait to see if the mums are going to be happier? (my guess is they will not)

Noobylola · 17/02/2016 15:08

Def fine if it was homemade, sounds yummy. Kids aren't going to eat broccoli at a party lol. I only can't stand it when I go to kids parties and everything is shop bought because of all the additives and what not. Yuck.

Extreme Zombie thread!
But fun seeing some of the old names, and the OP's DD will be starting secondary school this year!

EssentialHummus · 17/02/2016 16:14

I think nooby has OD'd on Chinese, McDonald's or fizzy pop today; can't think what else is driving her to resurrect a dozen ancient threads Grin

Doubleuponcoffee · 17/02/2016 16:15

Not understanding what's so great about humus? Even though it's yum

What's the big deal? MN is the only forum that seems to get hysterical about old threads being bumped. No harm

Really? Why, did you expect they would've taken some action based on your contribution if it were still relevant? It's a chat forum
