It's not normal to think a dog licking my babys face is amusing is it?

There's a woman I talk to on the way to taking DD1 to school, I don't see her every day, but to say she's into her three dogs would be an understatement.

We've got a dog too, but we've always treated her as a dog and not a baby, she gets lots of love but is not allowed to go too close to 6 month old DD2, which she's really good with and keeps her distance.

I saw the woman this morning, and she crouched down and held one of her dogs up (a yorkie I think), I thought it was so DD2 could have a look at him, but she held him really close to DD2s face and when the dog licked DD2s cheek she didn't move it away but laughed and let the dog lick her again I put my hand in between the dog and DD2, but it all happened so fast there wasn't a lot I could do.

I should have known better really as she's said before that the dog shares her pillow in bed at night! I'm not slagging off people who adore their dogs because I know they can bring so much sparkle to peoples lives, but even if you feel like that about your dog it's not acceptable to hold it up to a babys face and laugh when it licks the baby is it?

Nope, it's horrible. YANBU.

UndertheBoredWalk · 02/07/2010 11:13

Not unless it's your own baby and you don't mind yourself it's not no.
DD has spent all of her life (now 9) being licked by and sharing food with our dogs (not encouraged I should add!) Doesn't bother me in the slightest and she's never come to any harm from it. But I wouldn't presume that everybody else felt the same way and I certainly wouldn't let our dogs lick other people or their children like that.

mumblechum · 02/07/2010 11:13

Ugh, how utterly revolting. Does she not think about what that dog is going to have in its mouth after licking it's bum/bollocks/eating dog food.

Shudder.

Sparks · 02/07/2010 11:13

She doesn't have any children, does she? She thinks her dogs ARE her children, doesn't she?

YANBU it's not normal.

susie100 · 02/07/2010 11:14

Yuck

AgentZigzag · 02/07/2010 11:15

She has three children sparks.

Mumble had to laugh at that, ime babies, well toddlers really are a hell of a lot grosser than dogs. When DD was at the stage of giving bits of her food to the dogs and then having some herself, she was also eating mud, putting random insects (including slugs) from the garden in her mouth getting her hand in her nappy

I reckon some dog germs are not going to do any more harm

loopyloops · 02/07/2010 11:17

No, YANBU

I left my baby with my friend for 5 mins the other day, having laid down the law a bit about the dogs (3, all big, one young and never seen a baby before). I came back to find the baby on the floor with the young (not puppy), muscly dog licking her face. I picked her up, and friend said "I was just seeing what he'd do"!!!
NOT TO MY CHILD YOU DON'T!! I was livid, and I think you can be too.

UndertheBoredWalk · 02/07/2010 11:19

Meant to reiterate, that's me though and my DD, I wouldn't dream of assuming other people are the same and think this woman is total loon.

Booboobedoo · 02/07/2010 11:20

YADNBU.

(I'm a dog-owner).

And loopy - that is appalling.

mumblechum · 02/07/2010 11:21

UTBW, double yuck!!

But at least your dc will have incredibly good immune systems

slushy · 02/07/2010 11:23

I own a dog and ewwwwww no YANBU

Colliecross · 02/07/2010 11:23

loopyloops livid on your behalf

Agent ZZ YANBU.

Recently my daughter was in supermarket with baby, old dear cooing at him then LICKED HER HAND AND SMOOTHED DOWN HIS TUFTY HAIR WITH HER SPIT!!
Still livid now tbh

MrsC2010 · 02/07/2010 11:24

Eeew, another person's dog? Yuck. I wouldn't freak out if one of our soppy great things licked our soon to arrive DC, but I know and trust them and know it would only be a sign of subservient pack behaviour. (Subservient to the baby.) But it certainly will not be encouraged and they will be trained to keep their distance.

AgentZigzag · 02/07/2010 11:24

Fucking hell loopy, I would be livid at that as well, just seeing what he'd do??? And if he'd taken against your baby and had a chunk out of her...?

Agree toddlers are just as bad

I walked on a bit mumble and did her face over with a wet wipe, which she was none too pleased about

I'm not precious about germs, but like you say, I was hoping he hadn't just had a dump and then cleaned himself up, he's got a habit of eating radom stuff off the pavement as well.

My DD often kisses our dog but I trust our dog with her and it is only a sniffy kiss. She will lick DD's fingers and hair tho.
The dog loves babies and will sniff and lick their feet all day if I let her.
DD likes to feed the dog and has often shared kibble with her

I would be annoyed if someone else let their dog lick DD, especially a yorkie when she had lifted it up into a defensive position.

Loopy I think I would of wanted to slap her for doing that.

Starbuck999 · 02/07/2010 11:35

Yuk. I personally can't stand dogs licking me, why on Earth anyone would let a dog lick their baby's face is beyond me! Dogs lick their bits and bums, sniff other dogs bums and eat dog food. Wh'd be happy to then have that mouth near a baby?

I work for an ambulance service and I've lost count of the number of times I've had to deal with hysterical parents because they beloved dog has been allowed close to the baby and bitten/mauled it's face!

Threelittleducks · 02/07/2010 11:36

YADNBU
My mum's dog does it to my son and I don't really like it tbh. I don't think I would like it if it was someone elses dog either. My son loves it (21 months) but I just don't. Trying to teach him to keep a safe and respectable distance away from dogs and particularly their faces!!!

Although, have caught ds on occassion sharing food with my own dog. And sharing the dog's own jumbone with him too (disgusting!!) before I catch him at it!!

I would be well angry at that too Loopy.

Children should ALWAYS be higher than dogs. Dogs=floor. It's basic pack mentality. Placing your child on the floor was like saying to the dog "here is your equal, smaller, weaker being - do as you will".
I would also have been raging!! Hope you gave them hell Loopy!!

AmazingBouncingFerret · 02/07/2010 11:38

As much as I think the sun shines out of my dogs arse I know others dont hold that opinion wouldn't dream of allowing her to lick a childs face. She has often tried to get a sly lick of DD face but gets pulled off straight away.
Must say she comes in handy when DS has eaten something sticky and I cant be bothered to get up I am too busy to wipe his hands, because she'll lick them clean enough to not leave any marks on my sofa! Same goes for any spilt food!

Starbuck999 · 02/07/2010 11:39

Ooopps, really should spell check - sorry!

Colliecross · 02/07/2010 11:44

Fiofio

Debs75 · 02/07/2010 11:54

amazingbouncingferret All our dogs have been excellent hoovers. I call our dog in after meals to clean up the mess.

Curiousmama · 02/07/2010 12:05

YUCK!! YANBU at all!!!

Also I have a lovely dog, very very friendly, but I wouldn't even trust him with a baby/toddler. Loopy your friend should be shot

I went to pick up my dog from my sister's the other week. Her dgd was there, she's 5 months, and was laid on a blanket on the grass. They said my dog hadn't bothered her but even so I was paranoid more over his claws than anything. Think dog picked up on this though and went a bit loopy

I adore my dog but at the end of the day he's a pack animal and a dog not human.
