It's not normal to think a dog licking my babys face is amusing is it?

There's a woman I talk to on the way to taking DD1 to school, I don't see her every day, but to say she's into her three dogs would be an understatement.

We've got a dog too, but we've always treated her as a dog and not a baby, she gets lots of love but is not allowed to go too close to 6 month old DD2, which she's really good with and keeps her distance.

I saw the woman this morning, and she crouched down and held one of her dogs up (a yorkie I think), I thought it was so DD2 could have a look at him, but she held him really close to DD2s face and when the dog licked DD2s cheek she didn't move it away but laughed and let the dog lick her again I put my hand in between the dog and DD2, but it all happened so fast there wasn't a lot I could do.

I should have known better really as she's said before that the dog shares her pillow in bed at night! I'm not slagging off people who adore their dogs because I know they can bring so much sparkle to peoples lives, but even if you feel like that about your dog it's not acceptable to hold it up to a babys face and laugh when it licks the baby is it?

I was going to suggest that you smear a dirty nappy on her face but I can be a right cow when I want to (in my head) so that probably would be going too far

paisleyleaf · 02/07/2010 12:12

ewwww yanbu

AgentZigzag · 02/07/2010 12:19

If I'd have had a dirty to nappy to hand laza...

I would draw a line at licking her face, if she'd had the dog on her pillow I might as well have licked the dog! hehe, if there's a next time I might go for that, the dog would probably like it though.

How did you handle your friend afterwards loopy? It really is shocking what she did, especially as you'd said to keep the dogs away, makes what I've posted seem so trivial.

To be honest, and it's not like me, I didn't say anything. I whisked her up of the floor and walked into another room. I just didn't know what to say. She knew I was upset. The whole weekend was a bit like that, another relative kept feeding her really inappropriate foods (pringles etc, 1 year old) and I'd had enough. Got to go back for her son's party soon and I might make a point then, but not sure how. Any ideas?

Mumcentreplus · 02/07/2010 12:33

News Flash 'Dogs lick their own arses!!'..YANBU at all!!

AgentZigzag · 02/07/2010 12:38

You'd already said it to her loopy, so it's not as though she didn't know you'd prefer the dogs to keep a distance.

I would say that if you want her to stop doing stuff like that, and she's also not picked up on your body language, you're going to have to spell it out in letters a meter tall.

Hopefully she'll not get shitty about it, but there are some things that are nigh on impossible to say so the other person doesn't take offence.

Is she a very close friend?

flibbertigibbert · 02/07/2010 12:41

Yuck.

This drives me mad. MIL always laughs when her dog licks me because she thinks the dog is being cute. This is the same dog who licks the bin and dog poo on the floor.

AgentZigzag · 02/07/2010 12:43

You'll be taking lazarubs advice then flibbert??

mumofthreesweeties · 02/07/2010 12:44

YADNBU, wtf was she thinking. I would lose my rag totally. I am not a dog lover at all and hate it when people think we should adore their dogs and go gaga over them. I would totally lose my rag if someone's dog did that to my DC

grapeandlemon · 02/07/2010 12:46

How fucking revolting

The dog was probably licking his own or another dogs ass a while before.

i would have hit the roof actually

WynkenBlynkenandNod · 02/07/2010 12:53

That really is vile. Licking banned in this house and poor dog stands there licking her lips as she knows she's not allowed to lick people. But who on earth wants a concoction of dog arse, horse poo and dead mouse licked all over them

AgentZigzag · 02/07/2010 12:54

I was so shocked, and like I said it happened so quickly, that I came over all passive and just walked off

Dogs lick their own arses/bits and stick their noses in other dogs poo, enough said! Bleurgh!

diddl · 02/07/2010 14:16

I love dogs but YANBU.

This morning I was out walking.
A guy was walking his dog-he gave it a treat which it dropped.
I picked it up & gave it-had forgotten how hot a dogs breath can be-and this was only my hand!

Can´t imagine how revolting it would feel on your face in this heat-apart from the thought of where their tongue/nose might have recently been!

Own dog, own baby=own decision.

Someone elses baby=not your decision imo.

ASecretLemonadeDrinker · 02/07/2010 14:17

YABU, it's funny. Well, it is if you're ok with it - my 22 month old and 4 yr old love getting kisses from the jack russell. I would sooner have that than use a public toilet! I would however never have a dog living in the home as 'one of the family' in beds etc., not for hygiene as such but dogs are dogs.

diddl · 02/07/2010 14:19

ASecretLemonadeDrinker-but that´s your dog & your children?

Many things are funny if you´re ok with them!

kailie · 02/07/2010 14:40

eeuugh!

I have 2 gorgeous dogs who are very much part of the family, but my general rule of thumb is never let anything lick your face that can (and frequently does) eat horse poo & can lick its own arse.

Anyone who wants to let their dogs lick them - fine by me....
......but would be severely p**d off if they encouraged their dog do it to my child

GetOrfMoiLand · 02/07/2010 14:51

Yuk. Skanky dog breath in a baby's face.

Some people are schtooopid re dogs.

GetOrfMoiLand · 02/07/2010 14:51

Cue someone coming on 'MY dog's breath isn't skanky actually'

qwertpoiuy · 02/07/2010 14:54

A mate of my husband's lost the sight of one eye as a baby after being licked by a dog. He developed an eye infection afterwards that left him blind in that eye.
However I guess this lady's dog has had the necessary vaccinations.

Vallhala · 02/07/2010 15:37

Not the end of the world and your child is highly unlikely to die from being licked by a dog so although you are being perfectly reasonable in not wishing it to happen (it's your child after all, and your wishes on this should be respected), you are overreacting in getting so stressed about it.

Yes, yes, I can hear the anti dog brigade screaming their "What ifs" already, but the very, VERY vast majority of dogs do not bite/attack for no reason/spread life threatening disease.

quert's comment is incredibly rare, the old "far more dangerous crossing the road" type of rare. In all my years of owning and working with dogs I have never heard of the like and nor have I met (AFAIK) anyone within the dog world who has.

diddl · 02/07/2010 16:24

Of course there´s unlikely to be a bad outcome.

I think it´s the assumption that everyone finds your dog as cute as you do & therefore wants to be kissed licked in the face by it!

AgentZigzag · 02/07/2010 17:30

Your dogs are the ones without skanky breath aren't they Vallhala?

I wouldn't say I was totally stressed out about it, perhaps if he'd licked her mouth I might have been a bit more pissed at the woman.

DD2 is fascinated with our dog and is transfixed when she's around. There's no way I can be too bothered with the amount of dog hairs that seem to get bloody everywhere, I swear she malts her own body weight in them everyday
