..to wish Andy Murray would shut his mouth?

I know he's a brilliant player, the best we've got etc..but why does he have to celebrate every point with that hideous, square-jawed, gurning, faux wild-animal roar? There was a pic of his mother on the front page last week with exactly the same expression. Put me off my porridge.

Is it just me or do the majority of tennis players talk in this monotonous drone, on and on about how well they played this point or that.

My theory is either they have been taught to talk in this manner so they don't inadvertently say something interesting or controversial. Or they've spent so much of their young lives playing tennis, they haven't learnt to communicate properly.

Probably a sweeping generalisation actually. I do wish him well in the championship.

BoneyBackJefferson · 30/06/2010 17:45

Anyone But Murray (or Scotland)

LetThereBeRock · 30/06/2010 17:48

I'm Scottish and don't give a toss if anyone supports him or not,and I'm not an 'Anyone but England type'.
I don't particuarly like him and I can't say I'm supporting him. I don't care if he wins or loses.

KurriKurri · 30/06/2010 17:52

I don't think nationality is so much to the fore in tennis is it? - they all play for themselves rather than their country, as far as I can see.

I feel pretty ambivalent towards Murray, don't care whether he wins or not, but it would be nice to see someone different win at Wimbledon for a change.

diddl · 30/06/2010 17:57

YANBU-looks like "The Scream" when he does it.

5DollarShake · 30/06/2010 18:02

Yes! The Scream! Minus the hands clasped to face.

pointydog · 30/06/2010 18:08

It's refreshing to see someone take their sporty job seriously and show a bit of grit after all that nancy football palaver.

Soojie · 30/06/2010 20:26

Who cares if he smiles or not? He's a sportsman, playing at the top level of his sport (in the world, Rockbird, not just hanging in there for novelty value, like Eddie did).

He doesn't have the luxury of team-mates to blame when things go wrong, so he has to concentrate quite hard if he wants to beat the other players ranked top in the world.

So maybe there isn't a lot of scope for smiling. Do you all smile when you are focussed on the job to be done?

One thing I admire about him is the fact he doesn't need to court the media - he is his own man, and that's sufficient. If he wanted to be Mr Popularity, I'm sure he could be, but to be honest, he isn't that superficial.

And don't waste your breath moaning about him being Scottish - right now the English media would kill for him to be one of theirs.

Rollmops · 30/06/2010 20:30

All of you whingers, put the sock in it. He's rather tasty and a great sportsman.
Take a good look at yourself in the mirror and after the initial shock, have a g-t, make it a double, you'll feel better.
Hic.....

expatinscotland · 30/06/2010 20:31

His live-in girlfriend is English.

Just13moreyearstogo · 30/06/2010 20:37

Don't like tennis, don't like Murray, but always feel a tad of sympathy for him because he was a pupil at the school in Dunblane when Thomas Hamilton opened fire on all those kids and teachers. I think an experience like that might make you a bit dour as an adult.

hmc · 30/06/2010 23:25

Really? My God - now I want him to win, despite him being Scottish

Just to add - I wasn't being flippant there.

Rockbird · 30/06/2010 23:32

Tasty??

Andy Murray
Beaker from the Muppets

TooPragmatic · 30/06/2010 23:34

YABU. I like him so much more than Tim Henman. What a bandwagon that was.

vanitypear · 01/07/2010 00:36

YANBU. The gurning/fist pumping is just awful. I watched him win on Monday. Hated it. Plenty of tennis players at the highest level charming and pleasant - Federer, Nadal, Djokovic to name a few. I don't expect him to be grinning while he's playing, but some manners and at least an attempt at charisma off court would be welcome. I think he gets it from his mother - she doesn't applaud a single shot by the opposing player, no matter how brilliant. No manners or grace at all.

PortiaNovmerriment · 01/07/2010 00:45

You simply cannot pull off an animal roar without looking like a twat if you also drink your tea with your little finger held out. I fear this is what Andy Murray does.

vanitypear · 01/07/2010 00:48

roar

AliGrylls · 01/07/2010 01:01

I was thinking exactly the same this evening when I was watching Tsonga match. Him and his mother look so alike it is uncanny.

Rockbird · 01/07/2010 01:22

So where are all his wins? His Grand Slam titles? A high ranking amongst a mediocre field is no great shakes. 10 years ago, 20 years ago he wouldn't have made ball boy.

toccatanfudge · 01/07/2010 07:49

against a mediocre field?

You really don't watch much tennis do you

He's made 2 Grand Slam Finals (including the Australian earlier this year) - where he lost both times to Federer

He's made the finals of 5 ATP Masters Series - and won 4 of those (the one he lost was against Nadal)

SixtyFootDoll · 01/07/2010 07:53

Leave him alone.
He is a great player
And unlike mosst doesnt court publicity, just gets on with the job.

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 01/07/2010 07:57

Nadal to win please. He is much tastier. And much more personable.

Worse than Andy Murray is Judy Murray....pushy parent if ever there was.

Rollmops · 01/07/2010 09:14

Nadal looks like a rat.
Wuzzhisname, ah, Federer on another hand looks like someone had squished his forehead and chin together, not a good look.
Yes, Andy Murray is tasty. With or without double g&t.
I have spoken. Rooooar. [pumps fist in air].
[exits stage left with a swagger]

Sneaks back to say, they all are fabulous sportsmen so it doesn't matter what they look like or how they act on court, they have earned the right to do whatever they like. On court.
